This talk will explore the life of Claire Madden (1905 to 1998) through her archive held at the Women’s Library. An Irish-born librarian who was largely based in London from the 1930s, she became increasingly involved in radical politics and feminist circles. In examining Madden’s feminist activism as a member of the Six Point Group, a leading equality feminist organisation in Britain (1921-1983), this talk will complicate our understandings of the construction of feminism during the 1930s and 1940s. It will also question why her involvement in the women’s movement has largely been forgotten. As an unmarried mother and working professional, Madden did not attempt to become a public figure, and her activism instead is revealed through organisational records and Madden’s personal papers. Much of her activism focused on the rights of mothers and children. At the same time, this talk will consider the impact of Madden’s communist beliefs and demonstrate how she was able to effectively collaborate with liberal feminists. Madden’s experiences provide valuable insights into the relationship between ideological beliefs and feminist identity. Opting to join Purdue after high school, Burks brought his dynamic athleticism to the Boilermakers before transferring to Oklahoma in 2024. As a freshman at Purdue in 2021, Burks saw limited action, recording one reception for 26 yards. His sophomore season in 2022 saw him playing 13 games with 15 catches for 149 yards. Burks' breakout came in 2023, leading Purdue with 47 receptions for 629 yards and seven touchdowns. Workshop information Join us for a unique and creative batik workshop where you will learn the ancient Indonesian technique of layering melted wax and dyes on textiles. Explore the vibrant world of fabric dyes and colour mixing as you create beautiful pieces of work. You will experiment with different tools and methods for applying hot wax to paper and fabrics before hand-painting with cold water dyes to create samples and a larger piece on fabric, either an abstract design or something inspired by nature or landscapes. Please bring any designs or images you may want to use as inspiration. Please dress appropriately as you will be working with fabric dye and hot melted wax. Biography Sharon Akers Having taught Art and Design in schools and colleges for over 30 years, I am now working independently offering a wide range of art workshops. My classes (AkersArtClasses) are always geared towards exploration for all abilities. They are relaxed and informal with the aim that each student takes away at least one piece of artwork. Although sculpture and mixed media is my preferred medium for my own work, having taught art for so long, I can cater for a wide variety of techniques and materials. I often use the beautiful surrounding Chiltern Downs for my inspiration and enjoy walking, looking, photographing and collecting before creating artwork in the studio.
