Cultural Experiences
What to Expect Step into the historic campus of the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH), their home since the 1950s, and gain rare insight into the world of the visually impaired. This immersive programme will take you behind the scenes to meet the dedicated staff who support clients in navigating life without sight — from teaching vital mobility skills to navigating pavements and public transport, to producing braille versions of popular novels, and even using smartphones and AI-powered tools to "see" the world. Participants will begin their journey at the Low Vision Clinic, where clients are first assessed and supported based on their degree of vision loss. Then, explore the Assistive Devices Centre, where you can get hands-on with tools that empower independence — including walking canes, magnifiers, talking clocks, and more. The visit continues to the Braille Library, a vital resource for the blind community, and the Day Care Centre, which supports elderly clients with visual impairment. You'll also go behind the scenes at the Braille Production Centre, where printed materials are painstakingly converted into braille, tactile graphics, and audio books. Meet Jason Setok, supervisor of the centre, and Hafiz Misran, librarian at the SAVH Braille Library — both of whom are visually impaired — as they share their personal stories of resilience, adaptation, and growth. Learn how access to knowledge and evolving technology have supported their journeys toward greater independence, alongside the unwavering support of family, mentors, and loved ones. Throughout the tour, you'll meet and hear from visually impaired staff members who will share deeply personal reflections — including the challenges of losing sight later in life, and the strength it takes to relearn everyday tasks, reconnect with the world, and live independently again. About Birth & Rebirths What does it mean to be reborn? For some, it is a spiritual awakening—being baptised, embracing a new faith, or finding solace in age-old rituals that mark a transition into a different way of living. For others, rebirth comes in the form of reinvention—leaving behind a troubled past, overcoming illness, or finding purpose after loss. From ex-residents who have rebuilt their lives, to individuals who have found strength in faith, community, or personal conviction, their stories remind us that transformation is always possible. Through facilitated dialogues with the social workers, and people on the fringes of our society we hope to provide opportunities for participants to engage in candid and heartfelt conversations. About the Organisation The Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH), formerly known as the Singapore Association for the Blind (SAB), is one of the Social Service Agencies (SSAs) for the visually impaired. Founded in 1951, the association is affiliated to the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) and is an approved Institution of a Public Character (IPC). Their mission is to help the visually handicapped help themselves by acquiring new skills and gaining self-reliance to cope with the integration into society. About the Host Jason Setok’s Journey Jason Setok’s path into vision loss began with a deeply traumatic experience. Diagnosed with glaucoma, his sight declined gradually and then suddenly. A former software engineer, Jason found himself unable to rely on the very tools that once defined his career. Even basic tasks, like using a computer, became overwhelming. “I had to relearn everything,” he recalls. He started with small yet significant changes liker arranging his home for better mobility, relying on muscle memory, and most importantly, leaning on the support of friends and a new community he found at the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH). Through SAVH, Jason joined a support group, connecting with others navigating similar challenges. His journey of rebuilding began with Orientation and Mobility (O&M) training, which equipped him with the skills to move safely and confidently through daily environments. He also completed Braille development training, a stepping stone that enabled him to take on meaningful employment within the organisation. Today, Jason plays a key role at the Braille Production Centre at SAVH, where he oversees the conversion of printed materials into Braille ensuring information remains accessible for individuals with visual impairment. Recognising his dedication and capability, SAVH promoted Jason to a supervisory position in 2022. His lived experience and professional growth have made him a respected leader and a role model within the organisation. Jason’s resilience also shines beyond the workplace. From tackling vision loss to rock climbing, he continues to challenge limits and inspire others. He often reflects on one key lesson: the importance of regular eye pressure checks which is something he now encourages others to prioritise. Hafiz Misran’s Path Born with retinitis pigmentosa, Hafiz Misran has lived with low vision since childhood. Today, he retains just 7–8% of his sight. A graduate of Lighthouse School, Hafiz joined SAVH as a young adult and has since become an integral part of the team. As a librarian, he manages a free reading service that loans out audio and Braille books to SAVH members and oversees a growing podcast library, accessible via Dropbox or thumb drives. His work is essential in promoting accessible reading and lifelong learning for the visually impaired community. Hafiz also benefitted from Orientation and Mobility training, which helped him build confidence and independence in his daily life. His creativity and enthusiasm extend well beyond his professional role whom he is an avid Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner at Evolve MMA, and a talented guitarist and singer. Hafiz embodies the spirit of self-expression and determination, demonstrating that visual impairment is not a barrier to leading a full and active life. SAVH’s Role in Their Growth SAVH has played a foundational role in supporting both Jason and Hafiz through personalised services, rehabilitation programmes, and vocational training. From mobility training and employment opportunities to community integration and peer support, SAVH remains committed to empowering individuals with visual impairment to grow, contribute, and thrive. Both Jason and Hafiz are shining examples of how accessibility, opportunity, and belief in one's potential can transform lives. Their stories reflect not only personal courage but also the power of a supportive environment in helping individuals reclaim purpose and possibility. Who should come? What to Expect How do our ex-convicts reintegrate into society after serving time behind bars? Gain deeper insight into the rehabilitation and reintegration journey of former offenders with a visit to Pertapis Halfway House—one of only two Muslim halfway houses in Singapore. More than just a place of temporary residence, this halfway house offers transitional support and substance abuse treatment to help residents rebuild their lives and prepare for re-entry into the community. As part of the visit, you'll hear directly from a former resident who will share candid reflections on life before and after incarceration. Listen to their personal journey—how they coped with prison life, their experiences at the halfway house, and the challenges and triumphs of starting anew outside the prison gates. Their story offers a human face to the statistics, and a reminder of the resilience and determination required to turn one's life around. You’ll also tour the facilities, including the shared dormitories where residents live side-by-side in mutual support, the prayer hall where daily muster, prayers, and motivational lectures are held, and the vocational training areas where residents engage in leatherworking, paper shredding, or furniture moving. These activities not only impart practical skills, but also instil discipline and a renewed sense of purpose. About Birth & Rebirths What does it mean to be reborn? Having served in various capacities—from the facilities team to the programmes team—he is now an integral part of the support network that helps ex-offenders reintegrate into society through stable employment, housing, and family reconciliation. Iskandar is known for his ability to build trust and forge strong bonds with residents. His understanding of the challenges they face is rooted in personal experience, having witnessed close friends and family members struggle with drug use. This connection allows him to engage meaningfully with clients across all phases of their recovery journey—from DRC 1 through 4 and into long-term rehabilitation. His responsibilities often extend beyond office hours, including night duty, giving him unique access and insight into residents' needs. For Iskandar, religion serves as a vital pillar of recovery. While PHH does not impose prayer or fasting, he believes that faith, guided by the principles of halal and haram and grounded in the Five Pillars of Islam, offers residents a moral compass and sense of stability. Encouraging clients to break out of their comfort zones, he supports them not only in healing but in building a new life rooted in discipline, accountability, and hope. Who should come? What You'll Do Join Ngee Teck Huat, the vibrant vegetable farmer Pua Chon Teck, in an exciting experience. Prepare for a captivating adventure as we delve into the fascinating world of vegetable farming! Discover the bustling network of workers, the multitude of vegetable varieties, and the tireless dedication of Mr Pua and his team. From contract farming to international logistics, this is a journey you won't want to miss! Get ready to be entertained and enlightened by the remarkable story of Ngee Teck Huat, the unsung hero of Singapore's vegetable market. About MY-SG Singapore and Malaysia are closely knitted cultural, historically and socially. This series hopes to highlight the essential, everyday connections between Malaysia and Singapore—particularly through the flow of produce. From fresh produce and poultry to beloved snacks and ingredients, much of what fills our tables in Singapore begins its journey across the border. This programme shines a light on the unseen hands and early-morning movements that keep our markets and kitchens stocked. Through stories and shared meals, MY-SG honours the people, relationships, and supply chains that nourish both nations, reminding us how interwoven our daily lives truly are. About the Host Meet Mr Pua, the driving force behind Ngee Teck Huat, one of the largest vegetable suppliers serving Singapore's markets today. Mr Pua has spent nearly three decades growing and supplying vegetables, and his passion for the work remains undiminished. “I’ve never complained about being tired,” he says. “I really enjoy it.” Even on public holidays like Labour Day or Hari Raya, he insists on working—asking his team to leave certain tasks for him just so he can keep moving. For Mr Pua, farming isn’t just a job—it’s his way of life and his form of exercise. His journey began at just 19 years old, when he and his brother decided to strike out on their own after finishing school. With their father focused on wholesale vegetable trading and not directly involved in guiding them, the brothers took the initiative to reserve their own plot of land. While his older brother helped register the business, it was Mr Pua—with strong support from his mother—who eventually took the reins. Starting with a $20,000 loan from Shun Feng to purchase farming nets, he built up the business from scratch. Today, Ngee Teck Huat produces an astonishing volume of fresh produce—over 15,000 to 20,000 kilograms of vegetables daily, with 90% bound for Singapore. They grow over 100 varieties of vegetables, including top sellers like xiaobaicai, kangkong, bayam, and ongcai. The farm supplies major retailers like NTUC, Sheng Siong, Hao Mart, Umart, and Baimei, and maintains a tight logistics operation to ensure freshness. A hands-on leader, Mr Pua starts his day early by visiting the farms, checking crop quality, and distributing fertilisers weekly. With over 100 workers from Nepal, Indonesia, and Bangladesh, many of whom have worked with him for years, he believes in giving them ownership through contract farming to boost motivation. Unlike others who buy and resell, Mr Pua’s edge lies in growing his own vegetables—something he takes great pride in, every single day. Who should come? Everyone is welcome to participate in this exciting tour! What to Expect Most people inherit keepsakes; Jocelyn inherited a recipe—and a passion to keep it alive. Join us for an intimate, hands-on session with Jocelyn Loi, founder of All Things Hainanese, as she shares the story behind her family’s iconic Hainanese Yi Bua—a glutinous rice kueh filled with aromatic coconut, peanut, ginger, and sesame. Participants will not only get a rare opportunity to hear Jocelyn’s heartfelt journey of preserving her late grandmother’s legacy, but also roll up their sleeves to learn the traditional techniques of preparing and shaping Yi Bua by hand—just as Jocelyn and her grandmother did. From kneading the glutinous rice dough to wrapping the filling in banana leaves, you'll get a true taste of Hainanese heritage. Expect an engaging afternoon of storytelling, cultural exchange, and kueh-making that connects past to present—one kueh at a time. About Meet My Craftsman From the soothing touch of a traditional Javanese masseuse helping a new mother regain her strength, to the gentle folds of a child’s first saree, or the lovingly hand-stitched chouchou, our constant companion from childhood—our first journeys through life are often accompanied by the care and craftsmanship of those who make these moments tangible. Meet My Craftsman is a celebration of the crafts, rites, and rituals that mark the beginning of life. On the theme of My First Journeys, this programme explores the many ways communities across Singapore commemorate milestones such as the birth of a child, the first month, first year, or first rite of passage. These early steps are steeped in meaning—often marked with traditional foods, handmade tokens, and symbolic objects that express hope, protection, and joy. From practical postpartum traditions like Javanese massage and herbal care, to edible celebrations like Ang Ku Kueh (red tortoise cake given during a baby’s first month) and Yi Bua (a steamed coconut glutinous rice dumpling from the Hainanese community), each object or treat carries with it a deeper cultural resonance. Clothing, too, becomes a marker of growth and identity—like the physical and symbolic meaning of sarees in the Indian community, handmade and passed down through generations. Many of these traditional ways of welcoming and celebrating new life are fading in today’s fast-paced world. Through demonstrations, conversations, and hands-on experiences, Meet My Craftsman shines a spotlight on the artisans and practitioners who keep these customs alive. Join us as we meet the craftspeople who have helped generations begin their life journeys with care, meaning, and beauty. Slow down be reminded of the objects, gestures, and traditions that make our earliest memories so deeply treasured. About the Organisation All Things Hainanese was established in September 2020 as a heartfelt tribute to the late Mdm Yeoh Min Lin, a resilient matriarch who built a legacy through food. What began as her humble kaya bread and Yi Bua stall in Toa Payoh grew into Hainan Cuisine & Snacks, a beloved hawker business rooted in tradition and perseverance. Now led by the third generation, All Things Hainanese is dedicated to preserving and promoting Hainanese heritage through food, stories, and community engagement. With Hainanese making up just 8% of Singapore’s Chinese population, the initiative strives to celebrate and sustain the unique cultural identity of this close-knit community for future generations. Meet your Host Meet Jocelyn Loi, a third-generation Hainanese kueh maker dedicated to preserving the culinary legacy of her late grandmother, Mdm Yeoh Min Lin. After a successful decade-long career in the hospitality industry, Jocelyn made a bold life pivot in the wake of her grandmother’s sudden passing—a moment that profoundly changed her. Driven by love, memory, and a deep sense of purpose, she left her senior managerial role at a five-star hotel to honour her grandmother’s craft and continue the 45-year family tradition of handmade Hainanese kueh. Today, Jocelyn co-runs All Things Hainanese at Bras Basah Complex, where she painstakingly prepares yi bua—a traditional Hainanese glutinous rice kueh with a rich coconut, peanut, and ginger filling—just as her grandmother did. She hand-kneads every piece of dough, roasts her own sesame seeds, and blends ginger juice, preserving every step of the original recipe. For Jocelyn, this is more than a business—it’s a labour of love and a cultural calling. She hopes to inspire more young people to reconnect with their roots and to show that traditional food, though time-consuming to make, is a powerful way to keep heritage alive. Through her work, Jocelyn invites others to taste and share in the story of her family and the Hainanese community in Singapore. Who should come? Everyone is welcome to participate! Participants 12 years and under must be accompanied and supervised by a parent/guardian at all times. What to Expect? Rise and shine with the vibrant heartbeat of Little India as we take you through an early morning exploration of Tekka Market — one of Singapore’s most storied and culturally rich wet markets. This tour begins before the bustle peaks, when stallholders are setting up, regulars are picking out the freshest produce, and the aroma of breakfast fills the air. You’ll meet veteran stallholders like a chicken seller who’s seen Tekka evolve from its original days as a Chinese-only market to the multicultural hub it is today. Hear firsthand accounts of the days when villagers brought live chickens to sell — and watch as they were slaughtered on the spot, blood draining into the earth. Learn how a fire in the 1970s forced the community to relocate to the current Tekka Centre in the 1980s, where the spirit of the old market lives on in the people who still call it home. Discover how the market has adapted to its new customers, with specialty stores now catering to foreign workers and their tastes — like freshwater fish that are less familiar to Singaporeans used to their usual saltwater favourites. Then take a break from the sensory feast with a comforting cup of teh tarik at Ar-Rahman Cafe — the same stall where former President S R Nathan used to get his fix. Watch a live demonstration of this pulled tea in action, and taste why it’s stood the test of time. Come hungry for stories — and breakfast. About your Guide Corliss Chong is a passionate and personable Singaporean guide who believes that the soul of a city lies not just in its landmarks, but in its markets, kopitiams, and the quiet routines of its people. As a licensed tourist guide and long-time volunteer with My Community, she designs and leads immersive heritage experiences that bring Singapore’s neighbourhoods and hidden corners to life. Corliss is best known for her guided tour After Hours @ My Bendemeer —a programme under My Community Festival. There, she introduces visitors to fishmongers, vegetable sellers, and hawker stallholders, showing the quiet industry and camaraderie that sustain our everyday lives. Through her storytelling, even a bag of bean sprouts or a bowl of minced meat noodles becomes an entry point into heritage, memory, and identity. Beyond these curated experiences, Corliss offers private walking and cycling tours that explore Singapore’s built and natural landscapes—parks, temples, heritage trails, and wet markets—with warmth and enthusiasm. She is deeply attuned to the rhythms of local life and takes pride in giving her guests a personalised window into what she calls “the Singapore you don’t find in guidebooks.” Fluent in both English and Chinese, Corliss is also a seasoned traveller herself, which allows her to connect easily with international visitors. Whether she’s leading a small group through a historic district or chatting with an elderly stallholder over kopi, Corliss brings a gentle curiosity, a listening ear, and a deep respect for the people she meets.
