Join us for a evening of maps, history, and futurecasting with Jeffrey Linn —artist, cartographer, and visionary. Referencing past geographies and projecting them into the future, his work skewers our nostalgia, and reveals what our warming world will look like as CO2 levels continue to rise. Featured in The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Forbes, Grist , and more, Linn’s work has been celebrated by the late Ursula K. Le Guin and examined by Snopes. Grounded in science but guided by creative vision, his maps challenge us not only to see what’s coming, but to respond and adapt. Set inside the historic Georgetown Steam Plant—a relic of our fossil-fueled past and a Community HUB in transition for reimagined futures—this gathering invites us to confront the stark realities of climate change through Jeffrey Linn’s acclaimed "petrofuture" maps. With striking clarity and creative force, his work exposes glacial scars, rising tides, inundated cities, and the extractive systems that have helped to shape our present moment in geologic history—and continue to propel us into an uncertain future. Reference: When the Georgetown Steam Plant was built in 1906, atmospheric CO₂ levels were still below 300 parts per million (ppm). For the past 800,000 years, CO₂ concentrations had naturally fluctuated between 180 and 300 ppm, closely aligned with glacial and interglacial cycles. Today, we’ve surpassed 427 ppm (a first in human history). Scientists widely agree that the last time atmospheric CO₂ remained this high was 14 to 16 million years ago, during the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum—a period characterized by significantly warmer global temperatures and dramatically higher sea levels. This evening’s conversation builds on the theme of this year’s Georgetown Steam Plant Science Fair, “Break the System.” Linn’s work doesn't just map the future of climate change; it provides us with a blueprint: a call for adaptation and mitigation, economic reform, de-industrialization, and to rewild the lowlands. It challenges us to imagine not collapse, but bold and necessary transformation. There is still time to act—and still time to redesign our outdated industrial systems. The future isn’t written yet. We can reclaim it by showing up as active participants in a rapidly changing world. Following Jeffrey Linn’s talk, the conversation shifts from imagining the future to community conversations on actively shaping it—together. These maps aren’t just projections; they’re powerful provocations. The Duwamish River Valley stands at a crossroads, and the choices we make today will define our future. Together we'll explore urgent, community-driven questions: How do we prepare for the impacts of climate change and sea-level rise—from infrastructure adaptation to ecological resilience? What will our world look like—and what will become of ocean ecosystems—if we fail to act, and rising sea levels inundate industrial infrastructure and the toxic soils they leave behind? What will it take to break our dependence on global supply chains and the extractive economy anchored by the Port of Seattle—a critical link in modern consumer culture already under threat from rising seas? What steps must we take to accelerate the transition toward climate-resilient, localized circular economies—rooted in regional supply chains and industrial symbiosis? How do we deindustrialize flood-prone zones and reimagine them as thriving ecosystems, not sacrifice zones? Who will do this work? How do we house, train, and empower the workforce needed to rewild our future? This is a W atershed Moment —an opportunity to break from the current industrial system and accelerate the next great industrial revolution—a global circular economy. This is a call for action—a time a great transformation is needed. Jeffrey Linn will be showcasing his newest PetroFuture maps at this year's Science Fair on September 20-21, 2025. To learn more about this year's Science Fair, please visit: https://www.georgetownsteamplant.org/2025 To learn more about Jeffrey Linn's work, please visit: https://conspiracyofcartographers.com Doors open at 6:00 PM and will close promptly at 6:30 PM. The gate will be locked at 6:30 PM. If you arrive and the gate is locked please call 206-422-2086 for assistance. Please plan to arrive on time. When you click on "Get Tickets" in the red box (upper right corner), you'll see a list of registration options, grouped by sections. You can condense each section by clicking on the small arrow (^) on the right side of each building name . This wil hopefully make it easier for you to choose the ticket you purchase by choosing the building where you want to stay (or that you're attending for the day-ONLY), and the number of days you will be attending. CHILDREN and YOUTH (under age 18) Children and youth (under age 18) are FREE . There will be a question on the order form, after you check out, where you can let us know if you're bringing children. YOUNG ADULTS Reduced rates for young adults (18-25) are only available in Spruce and Tamarack/Cedars. SHARED ROOMS Please note that, except for the Annex Building, all rooms at Seabeck are shared rooms . If you know the person(s) you would like to room with, please indicate this on your registration or contact the housing person ( Sarah Sebastian at secretary@eckwa.org ). NOTE: We will do our best to accommodate your requested reservation with the people you wish to room with. However, because most rooms at Seabeck have multiple beds and are considered "shared rooms," you may be asked to share your room with others you are not registered with. This depends on which building you are in, and how many beds are in that room. We ask for your understanding and patience during the registration period as the rooms start to fill up and we sort things out. Thank you! FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE If you need financial assistance, please contact Mark Travers at 425-208-5453 or marktravers@eckwa.org. EARLY ARRIVAL If you register for Seabeck to arrive on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday and you arrive earlier than 4:00 p.m . , an additional $10 will be charged for the day fee required by the Seabeck Conference Center. ---------------------------------------- Guest Speaker — Patti Dobrowolski Patti Dobrowolski has been a spiritual seeker since the age of 12 when, after her grandmother’s passing, she appeared to her to provide comfort. This moment sparked Patti’s search for spiritual truth and a path that could explain this powerful event. In 1984, she discovered the teachings of Eckankar and the answers she sought. Since then, she has been a leader in Eckankar programs throughout the US, and an international speaker for ECK. She currently resides in Tucson, Arizona, with her wife, Julie, and three dogs. Supporting Youth and Family Attendance To help make attendance at Seabeck more affordable for families, all children and youth (under 18) are allowed to attend at no cost. In addition, we have tried to make the rates for Young Adults (age 18-25) more affordable. This is possible because the Washington Satsang Society underwrites the costs that Seabeck charges for children, youth, and Young Adults. We truly appreciate the generous gifts so many people have made to this fund over the years. If you would like to help support youth and family attendance at Seabeck, there are two ways you may donate: On Eventbrite - A t the bottom of the ticket list , before you click the "checkout" button , you'll find an "Add-ons" option for "Supporting Youth Attendance." On our WA ECK website (eckwa.org) - You may also visit the donation page on our WA ECK website to support youth attendance at Seabeck. Thank you so much for all the love and support you give! See You There! We look forward to being together again in our wonderful ECK community. See you there! Arts Comedy
Many Seattle comedians are getting personal on stage and using their platforms to bring light to difficult topics like mental health. On August 14, join The Seattle Times’ Mental Health Project and Laughs Comedy Club for a night of comedy sets focused on mental health, followed by a short Q & A about humor’s role in healing. Featuring Chris Mejia and John Gardner, Juno Men, and AJ Norris. Chris Mejia’s comedy seamlessly blends lighthearted cultural observations with takes on harder subjects like mental health and being Afro-Latino. Chris has been featured on the BBC World Service Radio, NPR, was named a "Undisputable Genius of Comedy" by The Stranger, was a semi-finalist for the 39th Annual Seattle International Comedy Competition, and performed at Bumbershoot, Treefort Music Festival, Limestone Comedy Festival, and the Altercation Comedy Festival. Chris has also written for the Needling and Flexx Mag. Featuring: John Gardner was born and raised in Seattle proper and has been a subtle fixture in the Seattle comedy scene since age 20. A perennial bachelor and privileged snob, John’s critical brand of humor takes aim at both himself and others. Audiences are either drawn to John’s absurd outlook or are relieved he’s just the opener. Finalist in the 2024 Seattle International Comedy Competition. Featuring: Juno Men is a Seattle-based comedian and writer. She is openly transgender and obviously Asian, the daughter of Cambodian immigrants. Her credits include the Upper Left Comedy Festival, Seattle International Comedy Competition, Don’t Tell Comedy Seattle and Portland, hosting the Seattle Moth Storyslam, and making her 94 year old non-english speaking grandma laugh more than her siblings and cousins combined. Featuring: AJ Norris is a comedian and visual artist based out of the Pacific Northwest. His stand-up tackles difficult topics with absurdism and wit. Seattle club favorite and local producer, AJ’s aloof and clever style is sure to bring you joy! The Seattle Times’ Mental Health Project is an initiative focused on covering mental and behavioral health issues. It is funded by Ballmer Group, a national organization focused on economic mobility for children and families. Information Source: Laughs Comedy Club | eventbrite

The night Alison was murdered, Rachel could have stopped it. Preorder you copy through our store to get it on the release date and have plenty of time to read it before our discussion. Email us at info@purplecouchbookshop.com or call 978-557-2187. And even if you don't get to read it prior to the event, as long as you don't mind spoilers, come on down to meet Kate and get your copy signed. Kate Russo reminds us, both perfectly and painfully, of the angst, jealousy, and self-doubt of youth. The strength of Until Alison lies in her ability to bring fury and compassion to both the bullied and the bullies. —Ann Patchett,New York Timesbestselling and award-winning author ofTom Lake When Rachel Nardelli finds out Alison Petrucci—her childhood rival—is found dead in Pleasant Pond, the same place the two girls had first said goodbye to each other back in eighth grade, the town of Waterbury is outraged by the fear of losing one of their own—the heir to Maine’s largest construction company. But it’s a little more complicated for Rachel. She saw Alison the night she died. Callous, she said something she shouldn’t have. She stirred up the past. The next morning, Alison was gone. Plagued by the complicated memories around Alison, Rachel joins her journalism crew to investigate the murder. But as she revisits their fraught relationship, she falls into a web of cruelties that threaten to undo everything she understood about her past. An explosive literary thriller from the acclaimed Kate Russo, Until Alison is a brilliantly incisive and resonant novel that is at once about class, gender, and the arbitrary nature of violence. Acclaimed author Kate Russo has long wanted to write a novel about the horrors of junior high. Her new novel, UNTIL ALISON (G.P. Putnam’s Sons; On Sale: July 15, 2025) is a brilliantly incisive and resonant literary thriller that explores class, gender, and the arbitrary nature of violence and silence while presenting a coming-of-age story with two fascinating female protagonists and a murder at its heart. Until Alison so vibrantly captures a particular time and place in life—with its nostalgia, its tension, its fine-tuned depiction of class. Kate Russo is a deft and compulsively readable storyteller. —Claire Lombardo,New York Timesbestselling author ofThe Most Fun We Ever HadandSame As It Ever Was Kate Russo reminds us, both perfectly and painfully, of the angst, jealousy, and self-doubt of youth.
