It's a good way to meet other members of the club. It is a gentle paddle on the River Avon in kayaks and canoes and is suitable for adults and children over 8 and most abilities. Please do contact us if you want to check if it will be OK for you. We ask that if you have a child paddling with us you stay at the sailing club or nearby in case your child wants to finish early or gets cold. We meet at 6.30pm at the Bristol Avon Sailing Club, get everyone sorted with boats and kit and then get you on the water. We paddle either upstream or downstream depending on conditions. There is no charge for parking. There are changing facilities, toilets and showers (male and female) so bring a towel. We aim to be off the water by 8.30pm. After the paddle some of us head to the nearby pub for a drink and cheesy chips. You'd be very welcome to join us. What do I need to bring? You need to bring water, a snack and a spare set of dry clothes. We recommend wearing shorts or leggings - not jeans! A warm layer like a fleece is a good idea for cooler days. Avoid cotton t-shirts and bottoms. If you have one - a wet-suit is great. If windy you might want to wear a cagoule. You will need to wear something on your feet - wet suit boots/beach shoes or trainers you don't mind getting wet are ideal. Kit If you require kit - boat, paddle, spraydeck, helmet and buoyancy aid then we can provide it for you. We ask that all paddlers wear a helmet for their own safety. Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. We look forward to paddling with you. Thank you To the volunteers from NACC who make Taster Sessions possible.

A message from our Chef Ali:
“Hi, my name is Ali and I come from Kurdistan, Iraq. I grew up in a beautiful city called Sulaymaniyah. I was studying Geography at university, but in 2017 I needed to leave because it was dangerous for me to stay. When I came to Bristol in 2020 I felt relief because the people were so friendly and supportive.
I learnt to cook from my grandmother and stepmother when I was 15. They said you must look after yourself when you are at University. I discovered I loved cooking. The first things I cooked were rice and aubergine stew to go with lamb.
When I lived in Manchester with 4 friends, I did all the cooking. In Bristol I worked in a Kurdish restaurant in Old Market.
I love sharing my recipes from my country with people from different countries. Kurdish cuisine uses a lot of fresh ingredients, herbs and spices. It is very tasty but not too spicy. So I am excited to have joined Migrateful and can’t wait to share my story and culture.”

The Art of Tim Burton: Exploring Dark Fantasy and Gothic Aesthetics | Hen & Chicken
May 14, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Southville
Characterised by dark, uncanny imagery and an off-beat persona, Tim Burton has cultivated a reputation as an eccentric and irreverent filmmaker. Spanning both live-action and animation, his work applies a macabre twist to everything from superhero and sci-fi films to biographical dramas and musicals. However, it is through stop-motion animation that Burton’s grotesque monsters and misfits truly come to life, allowing him to explore themes of bodily difference, disfigurement, and disassembly.
In this talk, Dr Christopher Holliday, a Senior Lecturer in Liberal Arts and Visual Cultures Education at King’s College London, examines how Burton’s fascination with unstable, conflicted bodies is enhanced by stop-motion’s inherent strangeness. We will trace his artistic beginnings at the California Institute of the Arts, his early work at Disney, and his departure to develop a gothic-inspired counter-style. By exploring
Corpse Bride
(2005) and
Frankenweenie
(2012), this talk reveals how Burton’s haunting aesthetic has shaped his legacy as a Hollywood outsider. By reflecting on Burton’s contribution to the development of animation as an art form over the last forty years, Dr Chris Holliday reveals how his haunting visual style has come to symbolise the career of a filmmaker whose identity has remained increasingly difficult to place.
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!

He has written multiple book chapters and articles on animation and contemporary media culture for academic publications, as well as for Total Film, The Independent, and The Conversation, and spoken on animation around the world, including at the British Film Institute and Cinema Museum in London and recently at the Annecy Film Festival in France.
