The sole work penned by Heldris of Cornwall, the early-thirteenth-century Roman de Silence tells the story of a girl of noble birth who is raised as a boy to circumvent a royal ban on female inheritance. For my inaugural professorial event, I have decided to put together a programme of medieval music performed on voice and portative organ that seeks to expand some discussions within Historical Informed Performance to the realm of programming, beyond matters of style and technique. Thus, rather than reconstructing authentic performance of a Roman, the programme seeks to illustrate Silence’s story and explore a range of binaries that emerge from the text, which exist alongside the gender binary and perhaps enhance of our understanding of it: narrative and non-narrative; musical and non-musical; instrumental and vocal; the court and its Others. Eh? Aye! The Artwork of Lorna Miller Exhibition Preview: 5 - 7pm Thursday 6th March 2025 Reid Ground Floor Corridor You are warmly invited to join us for the preview of our new exhibition Eh? Aye! The Artwork of Lorna Miller, on show in the Reid Ground Floor Corridor until 27th March. From being made to stand outside her chemistry class in high school for caricaturing her teacher, to being piled on by hundreds of angry Nicola Sturgeon fans online, Lorna Miller has sharpened her pencil and become one of the most successful editorial cartoonists in the UK. In 2014 she became the first woman to have a position created for her in Private Eye: illustrating the Rotten Boroughs column. From 2020 – 2021 she was the only woman in the UK to have a weekly cartoon with Scottish media platform Bella Caledonia. She also started working regularly for The Guardian. Eh? Aye! The artwork of Lorna Miller will showcase her editorial cartooning, alongside her first self-published mini comics after graduating from The Glasgow School of Art in 1994, with a BA (Hons) in Drawing & Painting. An editorial cartoon, also known as a political cartoon, is an illustration containing a commentary relating to current events, often lampooning politicians and political parties. Traditionally printed in newspapers, on line platforms have increased the reach of the medium. In spite of their popularity, there are fewer opportunities for artists today and the art form has mostly died out in Scotland. Worldwide, editorial cartoonists increasingly face the threat of sacking, imprisonment and even death. Editorial cartoons are a form of mass communication, a farce that is a potent force in moulding public opinion; they bulldoze through social and educational barriers. As an editorial cartoonist Miller has free rein to create narratives of her own choosing -a powerful position to have. In recent years Miller has overcome a series of debilitating health challenges, which led to being diagnosed with MCAS and hypermobility. These conditions are more prevalent amongst autistic people and she was diagnosed autistic in 2024, age fifty-one. This has provided insight into her creative process, work dedication, as well as setbacks along the way. She has found great benefit from becoming a Reiki practitioner in 2023. Part of our monthly Saturday improv drop-in workshop series at The Old Hairdressers Premises & Initiations with Jeff Khan This workshop is a deep drive into two of improv's most crucial skills. Determining your premise is fundamental to a scene's success - get it wrong and everything that follows will be really hard. We will practice how to figure out what the funniest idea from the opening was then work on how to frame these ideas into clear ways that are fun to play. We will then look at different and engaging ways to initiate, how to make your first lines feel like fun, not admin, and how to use your initiations to alter the tone of a scene. Jeff Khan is an improviser with a decade's experience. He is a teacher at the Glasgow Improv Theatre, as well as a member of the GIT's house team, Couch. March is Women’s History Month, an important opportunity to raise awareness of the achievements of women throughout history and in contemporary society. As part of our Women’s History Month celebrations Glasgow Libraries are delighted to offer a range of free author talks and creative writing workshops with inspiring female authors in libraries across the city. For our final event join us at the Mitchell Library on International Women’s Day for a creative writing workshop with bestselling author Marisa Haetzman. Marisa (in collaboration with co-author Chris Brookmyre) took the world of 19th Century Edinburgh medicine and brought it dramatically to life in the acclaimed Ambrose Parry novels. In this workshop Marisa, an author and an anaesthetist with a master's degree in the History of Medicine, will draw upon her own experience and reveal the strategies and techniques that can help turn your own area of historical fascination into an authentic, absorbing work of fiction. Led by Young People, For Young People scottishathletics are delighted to open the booking process for our second Athletics Trust Scotland Young People’s Forum Conference: Inspiring the Next Generation. Join us at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on Saturday 8th March 2025. Since the ATS Young People’s Forum was established in December 2021, the members of both Cohort One (2021-2023) and Cohort Two (2023 - present) have been committed to giving young people a platform and voice in all aspects of the planning, development, and delivery of athletics in Scotland. With this in mind, participants of the conference will have the opportunity to be involved in discussions around topics that have been highlighted through the recent surveys that were sent out to scottishathletics members on 'The Retention of Young People in Sport', 'Disability Inclusion' and the 'Transition to University'. ON YOUR MARKS → Q & A with ........................ We are delighted to welcome................ GET SET → Workshops Through consultation with the members of the ATS Young People’s Forum and the results of the recent surveys, we will have two workshops throughout the day. You will rotate between each of the workshops, meaning you won’t miss out! Below is a short synopsis on each workshop: 1) SAMH - Stress and How it Can Affect Us This interactive workshop will be delivered by Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) and will cover the following topics: Explore stress and how it can affect usExplore and understand the role of sport and ways it can help manage stress and anxietyExplore and participate in activities to help our wellbeing2) Para Athletics - An Inclusive Approach scottishathletics encourage and support an inclusive approach to coaching, competition and development. Inclusion can look different depending on the club, individual and environment. We are fortunate to have many examples of good practice throughout our clubs and competitions in Scotland, covering the whole pathway from development to performance. During this workshop we will identify potential barriers to participation and possible solutions. We will identify how to make athletics sessions inclusive by discovering practical examples of making adaptations to athletics to include athletes with a disability. This interactive workshop will be delivered by Scottish Athletics Paralympic Pathway Manager, Pamela Robson. GO → Focus Group Discussions You will have the opportunity to take part in two 20-minute discussions to help us understand the issues and support that young people need to help stay involved in the sport. Your thoughts and feedback will help shape the work of the development team in this area. The topics look at specific issues highlighted through the recent surveys that went out to all scottishathletics members. You will be asked to select which two workshops you wish to attend when you sign up. Topics: 1) Competition Changes An open discussion around the change in competition structure in line with the age group changes. The changes to Age Group calculations coming into force in 2026 provides an opportunity to review and adjust the competition pathway within Scotland. This workshop will discuss proposals from the scottishathletics Competitions team to closer align the pathway to the athlete development model and to increase and improve athlete retention and participation through all age groups. 2) Athlete Health An opportunity to highlight issues that face young people around a range of areas and identify the best way to communicate the support and resources available 3) Transition to University (further education) Discuss the concerns and issues around transitioning from school/college to University COOL DOWN → Discussion Panel We will be joined by a panel of athletes and coaches and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
