Cycling Sports & Fitness
In what has now become a global movement, Rapha challenges women around the globe to ride 100km each September. Join us for a ride to celebrate women in cycling in Vancouver! There are two route options - Flat (relatively speaking, it is Vancouver afterall) and hilly. You can pick the one you are most comfortable with, or pick the one that will challenge you the most. The choice is yours! We will start and finish at the Jonathan Roger's park, meeting at 8am and departing no later than 8:15am. We will do our best to stay together, but inevedly we will likely break into smaller groups. There will be designated regroup spots along each route, so you can ride at your own pace. There will be post ride drinks at the Jonathan Rogers park (beer, cider and kombucha). I am still working out the details for this since I am anticipating varied paces for each route choice. All ability levels welcome, you just need to have a drop bar bike and a helmet. Route options Hilly option here Flat option here Notes This ride is not directly affiliated with, or orgnaized by Rapha Shown duration is just a very rough estimate Information Source: Endurance Collective | eventbrite

Vancouver
Concerts Folk
Sunday, September 14th, 7pm$15 advance/ $20 door/ NOTAFLOF Hammer, Pick, and Saw plays moody, driving, and sometimes ethereal arrangements of traditional folk music. Originally a solo project by long-time banjo player Paul Silveria, the band now includes veteran musicians Allan Haley on pedal steel and Athena McKown on fiddle for a rich, immersive sound. Ghostly Hounds is the soulful folk-noir and old-time project of Francesca Mirai – a singer-songwriter and banjo player based in the Lekwungen Territory, colonially known as Victoria, BC. Drawing inspiration from many genres, Francesca has become known for their unique vocals, captivating audiences with a clear, soaring range, powerful projection, and just the right amount of grit, coalescing elegantly with traditional and modern banjo instrumentals. Formed in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal in 2015, Ghostly Hounds has toured extensively across Canada, the UK, and Ireland – including a 2025 tour capped by a performance at England’s Red Rooster Festival. Performances range from intimate solo sets to a full five-piece band, delivering a “double take”-inducing performance often described as “haunting” or “enchanting.” Francesca’s deeply personal songwriting explores themes of love and grief, earning adoration from audiences across North America and Europe. Their original, soulful arrangements and vulnerability on stage have garnered enduring and enthusiastic support from fans.Ghostly Hounds released their debut album Creature in 2017, followed by In the Rubble in 2022. Their latest single, Lonely Winter , was released in October 2024. Information Source: Green Auto | eventbrite

Practical Strategies to Communicate with your Critically Ill Patient | Vancouver Convention Centre

Practical Strategies to Communicate with your Critically Ill Patient | Vancouver Convention Centre

Sep 15, 2025 (UTC-7)
Vancouver
Cultural Experiences
Note: This is a standalone pre-conference event and does not require registration for the Western Canadian Interdisciplinary Critical Care (WCICC) conference . All are welcome! Preconference event is held on September 15th, 2025 from 1 to 5pm at the Vancouver Convention Centre (WEST-Room 214) Why This Matters Effective team communication is a recognized pillar of critical care—frequently studied, prioritized in quality improvement work, and reinforced through interdisciplinary training. Yet, there is far less focus on clinician-patient communication, particularly with critically ill individuals. Critically ill patients often face multiple, overlapping communication barriers that make it difficult—or even impossible—for them to express their needs, preferences, and experiences. When we don’t equip ourselves with the tools to support patient communication, we risk delivering care that doesn't reflect their values or needs. The Impact of Communication Barriers Unaddressed communication difficulties are not just frustrating—they’re harmful. They are associated with: increased patient distress, agitation, and anxiety, misinterpretation of symptoms, higher risk of adverse events, and more frequent use of restraints. Many clinicians report that communicating with critically ill patients is time-consuming, difficult, and often ineffective. But it doesn't have to be this way. What You’ll Learn This interactive session will introduce practical, evidence-based strategies to overcome common communication barriers in critically ill patients. You’ll learn how to screen for and address physical, cognitive, sensory, and motor challenges using simple, low-cost tools and environmental or behavioral techniques. The workshop will also highlight when to involve Speech Language Pathologists and give you the chance to build confidence through small-group practice and role play. Who Should Attend? While this session is geared toward ICU clinicians, the strategies are highly relevant for anyone caring for ICU survivors after discharge or supporting patients with communication challenges across healthcare settings —including medicine, rehab, palliative care, and emergency departments. Learning Through Practice To build confidence and comfort with new techniques, this session includes small-group role play and practice scenarios , so you can walk away ready to use these strategies in your own clinical setting. The Takeaway Improving patient-clinician communication isn’t expensive or time-consuming—but the benefits are profound: Better symptom recognition Enhanced patient experience and trust More efficient care aligned with patient values Join us to learn practical, compassionate techniques that will help make every patient’s voice heard. Learning Objectives This hands-on, interactive workshop will equip you with: An understanding of the different types of communication barriers experienced by ICU patients and how to assess for them—including physical, cognitive, sensory, and motor impairments Evidence-informed strategies for screening and mitigating communication challenges Simple, low-cost tools and techniques that can be used at the bedside Environmental and behavioral approaches that don’t require special equipment Guidance on when and how to involve Speech Language Pathologists as essential communication partners Gail Gumprich, MHSc, SLP Gail has been working as a Speech Language Pathologist for 19 years, much of it in critical care. She has also worked extensively in neuro rehabilitation focusing on speech, language and cognitive communication intervention. She is passionate about improving communicatively impaired patients’ ability to communicate in all aspects of their lives from participating in medical decisions to connecting with their loved ones in a meaningful way. Susan Bello BSN, RN Susan Bello is a highly experienced ICU nurse with 24 years of clinical practice in critical care at St. Paul's Hospital. She thrived in her eight-year challenge as ICU nurse educator and now specializes in simulation-based learning. When not working, Susan is addicted to volleyball despite frequent injuries from this sport. Tammy Vigliotti BHSc, RRT Has been a Respiratory Therapist for 30 years. She has worked at several lower mainland hospitals in acute and emergency care. She has worked at St. Paul's Hospital for the past 27 years. I take great pride in being a voice for my patients when they don't have one. Vininder K. Bains, MSN, RN, CNCC(C) Vini has been a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) of critical care at St. Paul’s Hospital for the past 9 years and currently also is an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Nursing. Her 28-year nursing career includes 17 years as an ICU nurse, both as a direct care nurse, and as a clinical instructor for critical care nursing.
