Fledglings Summer Sensory camp is designed for: Children aged from nursery to p.2 With special educational needs Led by our skilled and experienced Behaviour Therapy and Psychology team, this camp will take place at our independent special school (Sensations Nest) in Carryduff. Activities will be designed to allow children to explore their senses, learn, create and have fun! At the Nest, we use the outdoors as a key element of our learning experience. We anticipate as much outside time as possible (there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes!!), and children will be in a small group, with high pupil:staff ratio. We will be playing in the mud kitchen, exploring the jungle gym, sand and water tray, messy play experiences as well as using specialist approaches from our trained team, such as Attention Autism. His works have been translated into sixteen languages. Richard Bourke took his first degree at University College Dublin and completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge. He held his first academic post in Dublin, before moving to Queen Mary University of London, where he became Professor in the School of History in 2012. He was elected to the Chair in the History of Political Thought at Cambridge in 2018. In 2022 he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Arts by University College Dublin. He previously co-directed the AHRC-funded project on Popular Sovereignty in Historical Perspective as well as the History in the Humanities and Social Sciences Network, also funded by the AHRC. His work has attracted various accolades and awards, including as joint winner of the István Hont Memorial Book Prize in Intellectual History in 2016. Thu 5 - Sat 7 June 2025 Events will take place at the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen's 38-40 University Road, Belfast (unless otherwise stated) Full schedule available to read/download here When North arrived in June 1975, Seamus Heaney’s fourth collection of poetry was met with almost immediate acclaim. In the United States, Robert Lowell claimed that the collection represented ‘a new kind of political poetry by the best Irish poet since W. B. Yeats’, and Helen Vendler described Heaney as ‘the best poet now writing in Ireland’. In Britain, Blake Morrison described North as achieving ‘the kind of acclaim which… we had ceased to believe poetry could receive’. The collection won several awards, including the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize, the W.H. Smith Memorial Prize, the Poetry Book Society choice, and it was a major contribution towards Heaney’s selection as Nobel Laureate for Literature two decades later. Described in later life by its author as ‘The book of mine that came most intensely out of the first shock of the Troubles’, North also took what Heaney called a ‘hammering’ closer to home, for its representation of violence, its gender politics, and even what Conor Cruise O’Brien called its ‘bleak conclusiveness’. Despite this, poems from North continue to be collected, anthologized, and studied to this day, and the collection as a whole remains integral to an understanding and appreciation of Heaney and contemporary poetry. This conference aims to reflect on the moment of North, inviting responses from poets, academics, writers, artists, and those working in any field related to or adjacent to poetry. Join photographer Polly Garnett to discuss the images and scenes presented in ‘Hill Pictures’ - a large scale outdoor exhibition of the Belfast Hills. Tour is outdoors and lasts approximately 1 hour. Comfortable shoes advised. About the Artist and Exhibition: The Belfast Hills, consisting of Slievenacloy, Colin Glen, Divis and the Black Mountain, Ligoniel, Cave Hill and Carnmoney Hill, are iconic features of the city’s wider landscape shaping the skyline and playing a central role in community identities. ‘Hill Pictures’ documents the long-term conservation of the hills and our interaction with them. Collaborating with the Belfast Hills Partnership and the National Trust, Polly Garnett led five photographic workshops on Divis, Black Mountain and Cave Hill. Polly is a Belfast-based photographer, community artist, and educator. She works on long-term projects and commissions with a socially engaged and participatory approach, using photography as a tool for dialogue and creative expression. Alongside her freelance work, she facilitates arts and environmental education projects, encouraging children and young people to connect with their landscapes and histories in new ways.
