Friday 2nd May 2025, 5pm - 7pm. 'Mother Clyde' by Glasgow based artist Greer Pester is the second of three Outer Spaces commissions opening in Glasgow, spring 2025. We are excited to present a bold programme of newly commissioned works by artists Sooun Kim, Greer Pester, and Jamie Fitzpatrick. Selected from the Outer Spaces network of studio holders, this is a unique opportunity for the artists to make new, ambitious work in response to one of our most historic spaces. Responding to the former Clydesdale banking hall at 31 St Vincent Place, Glasgow, these works explore the building’s symbolic relationship to power, stability, and prosperity—qualities embedded in the fabric of this iconic Victorian structure. At the same time, the artists engage with the building’s current, transitory state, where past and present converge. The artworks will be unveiled in spring 2025 through a series of pop-up events, offering a dynamic exploration of the site’s rich history and its shifting role in the present. Simon Fisher Turner: In the Shadow of the Sun The images of In the Shadow of the Sun are fused with scarlets, oranges and pinks. The degradation caused by the refilming of multiple images gives them a shimmering mystery / energy, like Monet’s Nympheas , or haystacks in the sunset. There is no narrative in the film. The first viewers wracked their brains for a meaning instead of relaxing into the ambient tapestry of random images. The language is there and it is conveyed – and you don’t know what to say until you have said it . You can dream of lands far distant . (Derek Jarman, Dancing Ledge , 1984). In the Shadow of the Sun has been described as Derek Jarman’s ‘Super 8 masterpiece’. It was assembled from a dozen different short films made c. 1972-74, including pieces such as Journey to Avebury and Fire Island , which Jarman cut together and superimposed to create a new work. The resulting film is a testament to his experimental boldness, his fondness for revisiting and reimagining past motifs, and to the intensity and brilliance of his vision. In 1981, the renowned group Throbbing Gristle created a new soundtrack for a screening of In the Shadow of the Sun at the Berlin Film Festival. Such transformations of Jarman’s film works through music have continued into recent times, with his frequent collaborator Simon Fisher Turner making a new score in 2021 for the version of My Very Beautiful Movie currently showing at The Hunterian Art Gallery as part of Digging in Another Time: Derek Jarman’s Modern Nature . He also devised new music for the live performance Blue Now , presented at Tramway in November last year as part of the exhibition programme. For this special, one-off event screening of In the Shadow of Sun , Turner will present new music to accompany a stretched version of the film. It is a unique opportunity to see and hear one of Jarman’s key artistic partners continue their creative dialogue. To mark this occasion, The Hunterian has extended its opening hours so that visitors can see the exhibition before attending the concert. In the Shadow of the Sun is screened with kind permission of James Mackay and LUMA Foundation. This event is presented in partnership between Thinking Culture and Music in the University, in response to the Hunterian's exhibition, Digging in Another Time: Derek Jarman's Modern Nature. Simon Fisher Turner Composer Simon Fisher Turner is renowned for his film soundtrack work which started with Derek Jarman, for whom he scored many feature films - from Caravaggio (1986), through to Jarman’s final work Blue (1993). Caravaggio began a long relationship with the BFI, and more recently Fisher Turner composed the score for restorations of three silent films, Un Chant D’Amour dir. Jean Genet (1950), The Great White Silence dir. Herbert Ponting (1924) and The Epic of Everest dir. Captain John Noel (1924), winning a prestigious Ivor Novello Award for the soundtrack to The Epic of Everest. He has also composed film music for Mike Hodges, Michael Almareyda, Isao Yamada. His various collaborators over the years include Ruicki Sakamoto, Gina Birch, Deux Filles, The Derek Jarman Lab, and The Elysian Collective. With a career as varied and diverse as his current projects, Simon Fisher Turner began as a young actor in Tom Brown’s Schooldays, and in between then and now has released records under his own name and as The King Of Luxembourg and Deux Filles. Wednesday 7th May 2025 Booking slots: 11am - 12pm / 12pm - 1pm / 2pm - 3pm / 3pm - 4pm 'Mother Clyde' by Glasgow based artist Greer Pester is the second of three Outer Spaces commissions opening in Glasgow, spring 2025. The works will be revealed to the public through a series of pop-up events throughout the spring of 2025, offering a dynamic exploration of the site’s rich history and its shifting role in the present. This event is taking place in-person in the Boyd Orr Building Room 2 03 at the University of Glasgow or you can sign up to view the talk online. Event Details The next Scottish Parliament elections are about a year away – in ‘political time,’ that is a very long time indeed. Thinking back to the last Scottish elections in 2021, quite a bit has happened in the intervening period, not the least being a 2024 Westminster election that seemed to reshape the Scottish political landscape. Reports at the time suggested that Scotland had “fallen out of love” with the SNP and that without fundamental root and branch reform the party was set to lose the 2026 Holyrood elections. Then the Labour party’s programme for governing the UK began to come into focus, Nigel Farage steered the Reform party to poll surges that have surprised many and the Conservatives in Scotland continued to look for a path out of the wilderness. How will these different factors shape the electoral contest over the next year? Please join members of the Scottish Election Study ’s team of researchers as they present insights from their SCOOP data series to assess the prospects for the 2026 Holyrood elections. Speakers The Scottish Election Study is an independent, ESRC-funded academic study of Scottish politics, elections and voting behaviour. About the Stevenson Trust: The Stevenson Trust was established in 1921 by a bequest to the University of Glasgow from Sir Daniel Macaulay Stevenson to fund a Lectureship in Citizenship.‎ Since 2006 the Trust has promoted a series of annual lectures on citizenship themes. These are held at the University of Glasgow and open to academics, students and the general public. Speakers have included Professor Sir Bernard Crick and other politicians, academics, political theorists, journalists, educators and cultural commentators. The Trust also supports a number of other activities concerned with citizenship, such as conferences and events for schools. Symphony Apocalypsis Come gaze into the abyss with us at the premiere performance of the Symphony Apocalypsis at Glasgow Cathedral! Presented by the SCP Symphony Orchestra, this new work is the story of a soul in transformation; reforging itself through the philosophy of Nietzche, facing the heights of ecstacy and depths of despair that define the human condition, and finally confronting the apocalypse of revelation and kneeling before the cross. Singles released from his most recent LP “Laal” have featured at Rolling Stone India, BBC Radio4, Bandcamp, The Quietus, The Hindu, BBC Radio6 Music, BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Asian Network. Laal is a concept album about the influence of Bollywood and Indian cinema - platforming conversations around censorship, nationalism and caste which aren’t discussed often in mainstream media circles. Kapil also hopes to celebrate unsung heroes of the Indian film industry with singles from the album such as the director of queer film “The Pink Mirror” - Sridhar Rangayan. Kapil has showcased songs from Laal across SXSW, South Asian festival Dialled in, Latitude Festival, The Roundhouse and venues such as the Concorde 2 in Brighton alongside artists such as Tinariwen, Talvin Singh and Raghu Dixit. Highly sought after for session work due to his idiosyncratic guitar playing - Kapil has amassed a number of high profile collaborations and commissions including a rework of a Ravi Shankar composition to commemorate his 100th birthday for BBC Asian Network, a collaborative single with rap legend LIL B and performances in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall alongside Billy Bragg and members of legendary Scottish acts Mogwai / Belle & Sebastian. Intibint Intibint (meaning You are a girl ) is the moniker of Glasgow-based Yemeni artist Noha. Whilst studying for her masters at SOAS she began to revisit songwriting and performing after a long break from music. As a result of her deep dive into music and songs, Noha debuted her first single Myself , and later in 2021 an EP titled What Are You Willing to Do which introduced her own production, with the tracks You & Me and Telling my Mother . Her work is primarily electronic imbibed with inspiration by Yemeni sounds, exploring themes straddling both the personal and the collective. Her latest tracks Sunflower and Ymn Alsa3eed are symbols of Intibint’s journey both personally and musically, showing the breadth of her production skills and sonically innovative sound. Arusa Qureshi Arusa Qureshi is a writer, editor and music programmer based in Edinburgh. She is the current Editor of Fest and the former Editor of The List and writes mostly about music, most recently Flip the Script – a book about women in UK hip hop, published by 404 Ink. Her work has appeared in the Scotsman, Clash, the Guardian, GoldFlakePaint, Time Out, the Quietus, NME and more. She chairs the board of the Scottish Music Centre, sits on the board of the Music Venue Trust and is the co-curator of the award-winning Amplifi series at Edinburgh's Queens Hall. Creatives of Colour Festival The festival centers the voices, experiences, and creativity of people of colour in Glasgow. Storytelling sits at the heart of these creative practices, and celebrates the resilience, joy, and talent of PoC artists. Co-curated by Zahra Khosroshahi and Kevin Leomo. Our stories. Our lens. Our terms. This event is presented by ‘Thinking Culture’, a cultural programme from the School of Culture & Creative Arts, University of Glasgow.
