Alone in the Crowd Directed by Emily Louizou Can a house truly be haunted? Can objects come to life? Alone in the Crowd is a new piece that blends references from multiple short stories and essays by Poe, as well as drawing inspiration from the Gothic genre and the Expressionist movement. Inspired by some of Edgar Allan Poe’s most iconic Gothic short stories, this new piece will blend text with movement and music, in line with Emily Louizou’s signature style. Led by Tadeusz Kantor’s ‘bio-objects’ and combined with the classic horror trope of the haunted house, the ensemble explores how bodies fuse with objects, how stories emerge from furniture, and how the bending of rules can create a new dream-like version of reality. A visual poem about nightmares, doppelgängers, and haunted childhood memories. Director’s note:
I have been fascinated by Edgar Allan Poe’s stories ever since I first read them. Adapting his work has been an on-going project for me and my practice, in line with my interest in the human psyche and fantasy.Ultimately, The Hand of God is a life-affirming, surrealist and delirious tale about growing-up and the choices we make. Indeed, Poe has been hailed as the master of the macabre, but he is also the father of psychological thrillers. Poe unravels with a darkly complex - and yet so accessible - way the psyche’s deep secrets, desires, obsessions, and traumas.
