Alone in the Crowd Directed by Emily Louizou Can a house truly be haunted? Can objects come to life? Alone in the Crowd is a new piece that blends references from multiple short stories and essays by Poe, as well as drawing inspiration from the Gothic genre and the Expressionist movement. Inspired by some of Edgar Allan Poe’s most iconic Gothic short stories, this new piece will blend text with movement and music, in line with Emily Louizou’s signature style. Led by Tadeusz Kantor’s ‘bio-objects’ and combined with the classic horror trope of the haunted house, the ensemble explores how bodies fuse with objects, how stories emerge from furniture, and how the bending of rules can create a new dream-like version of reality. A visual poem about nightmares, doppelgängers, and haunted childhood memories. Director’s note: I have been fascinated by Edgar Allan Poe’s stories ever since I first read them. Adapting his work has been an on-going project for me and my practice, in line with my interest in the human psyche and fantasy.Ultimately, The Hand of God is a life-affirming, surrealist and delirious tale about growing-up and the choices we make. Indeed, Poe has been hailed as the master of the macabre, but he is also the father of psychological thrillers. Poe unravels with a darkly complex - and yet so accessible - way the psyche’s deep secrets, desires, obsessions, and traumas. The Hand of God Directed by Guillaume Pigé 1986. England is knocked out of the World Cup Quarter Finals with much controversy. Argentina’s first goal seems to have hit Maradona’s hand before being put into the back of the net. How is this fair? Mila, a young football player hoping to become professional, is knocked out too. Dreams turn to ashes. The beautiful game isn’t so beautiful anymore and all shots are allowed. Director’s note: Our starting points were scale, Emir Kusturica and Tadeusz Kantor. Throughout the development process, we have used some of Kantor’s principles as tools to explore Kusturica’s world, his characters and his aesthetic. At first, the questions leading our exploration was: how to achieve scale whilst keeping a concrete, genuine and direct link with the real? And then, how to play with the excessive, the outrageous and the bombastic, whilst maintaining strong, meaningful and honest connections with the truth. But then… what is the truth or what is our truth, and how hard are we willing to fight for it? Ultimately, The Hand of God is a life-affirming, surrealist and delirious tale about growing-up and the choices we make.
