Be the first to receive Brenda Jackson's newest book! Paid tickets include a signed paperback copy of Spilling the Tea. Ninety-something Mama Laverne isdeterminedto find all of her great-grandchildren their perfect match before going home to glory. So far, her success rate is 100 percent—and she intends to keep it that way. Ninety-something-year-old Felicia Laverne Madaris, known in the family as Mama Laverne, is determined to find all of her great-grandchildren the perfect match before she goes home to glory. So far, her success rate is 100 percent, and she intends to keep it that way. After sustaining injuries in Iraq, US Army Ranger Chancellor (Chance) Madaris was told he’d never walk again. Chance credits his great-grandmother, Mama Laverne, with giving him the will and fortitude to heal and prove the doctors wrong. He has a healthy respect for her meddling ways and knows he’ll eventually end up next on her matchmaker’s list. When Zoey Pritchard was eight, she survived a car accident that left both her parents dead. She was sent to live with her great-aunt who refused to speak about her parents. Zoey has no memory from before the crash, but she’s been having the same dream over and over… Guided by nothing but a hunch and images from her dream, Zoey travels to Houston. Searching for answers, Zoey uncovers a scandal involving her parents and the wealthy and powerful Madaris family. Her trail leads her straight to Chance’s door. The dislike and intense attraction are instant and simultaneous. Was it chance or Mama Laverne’s plan to throw this pair together? BRENDA JACKSON is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than one hundred contemporary multicultural romance novels, including the Madaris Family series, the Westmorelands series, and The Playas series. She was the first African-American author to have a book published under the Harlequin/Silhouette Desire line and the first African-American romance author to hit both the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists in the series romance genre. Many of her books have been adapted into movies. Brenda lives in Jacksonville, Florida, and divides her time between family, writing and traveling. brendajackson.net. ABOUT THE BOOK: A riveting blend of true crime and memoir tracing the author’s investigation into the kidnapping and murder of her great-grandfather in 1980s Louisiana and the reverberations on her family and community throughout the decades, set against the backdrop of one of America’s most mystical and overlooked landscapes—the Cajun prairie. On January 16, 1983, Aubrey LaHaye’s body was found floating in the Bayou Nezpique. His kidnapping ten days before sparked “the biggest manhunt in the history of Evangeline Parish.” But his descendants would hear the story as lore, in whispers of the dreadful day the FBI landed a helicopter in the family’s rice field and set out on horseback to search for the seventy-year-old banker. Decades later, Aubrey’s great-granddaughter Jordan LaHaye Fontenot asked her father, the parish urologist, to tell the full story. He revealed that to this day, every few months, one of his patients will bring up his grandfather’s murder, and the man accused of killing him, John Brady Balfa, who remains at Angola Prison serving a life sentence. They’ll say, in so many words: “Dr. Marcel, I really don’t think that Balfa boy killed your granddaddy.” For readers of Maggie Nelson’s The Red Parts and Emma Copley Eisenberg's The Third Rainbow Girl, Home of the Happy unravels the layers of suffering borne of this brutal crime—and investigates the mysteries that linger beneath generations of silence. Is it possible that an innocent man languishes in prison, still, wrongly convicted of murdering the author’s great-grandfather? Information Source: The Garden District Book Shop | eventbrite

Joy and Grief: These two deeply human experiences are deeply connected. In New Orleans, our funerals start with grief, the somber second line's somber dirge, and end in celebratory joy as we shake our asses and march down the street. On Mardi Gras, the Krewe of Saint Anne parades to the Mississippi River, a joyous occasion to pour the ashes of our lost loved ones into the water. In this city, we know that joy and grief are two sides of the same coin. You cannot fully understand one without the other. In this exhibition, fourteen International Collage Artists explore the obversity of Joy and Grief.  An Opening Reception takes place on Saturday, 12 April 2025, 6-8PM, part of April's Bywater Second Saturday Gallery Walk. The exhibition, “Joy & Grief: An Exhibition of Collage”, takes place at Kolaj Institute Gallery from 12 April to 31 May 2025. ABOUT KOLAJ INSTITUTE GALLERY The mission of Kolaj Institute is to support artists, curators, and writers who seek to study, document, and disseminate ideas that deepen our understanding of collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a 21st century movement. We operate a number of initiatives meant to bring together community, investigate critical issues, and raise collage’s standing in the art world. Kolaj Institute’s Gallery in New Orleans presents exhibitions and connects Kolaj Institute and the artists we work with to the vibrant St. Claude Arts District. We produce 8-10 exhibitions a year and participate in Second Saturday, the neighborhood’s monthly art walk, putting the collage art, books and exhibitions in front of New Orleanians and visitors. The Garden District Book Shop will host renowned photographer and New Orleans native William Greiner on April 13 for signing of his latest book Neutral Ground. In his breathtakingly beautiful Neutral Ground: New Orleans 1990–2005, William Greiner presents a striking visual record of pre-Katrina New Orleans in the classic styles of William Eggleston and Birney Imes. Printed in Italy under the artist’s direction, the pages explode with color: a father floating in a gelatinous cerulean pool, an abandoned armchair framed by arsenic- green walls, Titian-red tiles atop the old New Orleans Athletic Club, and a riot of pastels inside a Chinese restaurant. Each of the eighty-six photographs reflects a lifetime of making art and documenting place, forming a passionate tribute to Greiner’s lost home. The event will begin at 4:00 PM. Greiner will be joined in conversation by Abram Himelstein, editor in chief at the University of New Orleans Press. After they discuss his work they will open up the floor for a Q&A. Greiner will then be available to personalize copies of her book. The event is free and open to the public. Books can be reserved in advance on Eventbrite.
