Look around you. Nearly everything you can see began with a drawing. Your clothes? Fashion illustration. That radiator? Product design. The building around you was an architectural sketch. Those drawings would not have been about perfectly replicating something, because that something did not yet exist. I believe that drawing is for everyone because it is a way to imagine. Come along an learn some of the Traditional Drawing Skills relating to Character Design alongside the skill of Drawing from your Imagination. We'll play drawing games together in the ever-inspiring exhibitions at the National Musuem of Scotland and learn tricks to help each of us conceptualise and create our own character. I'm Hannah Kelly, an Edinburgh-based artist and art educator - please know you're ever so welcome whatever your confidence level with drawing. My tours are about building creative courage and laughing together and seeing things afresh. This drawing tour is relaxed and playful, suited to teens as well as adults. Arts Literary Arts
We are looking forward to being joined by James Yorkston, on Thursday 6th March at 7pm, as he chats to Alistair Braidwood about his unsettling, deeply atmospheric noir set in the remote Scottish Highlands, Tommy the Bruce. Meet Tommy Bruce, an anti-hero as unlike his historical namesake as could be imagined - very nearly spineless and not at all the man to save himself, until you push him too far... Tommy Bruce is washed-up in a ramshackle hotel inherited from dead parents in the armpit of Perthshire. Saddled with debt, grotty premises that are falling down around him and a crippling loneliness, Tommy is slowly but determinedly drinking himself and his business out of existence. Until one day, out of the blue, Fiona McLean blows into Tommy's life and the hotel. With the light she brings, Tommy's fortunes might just be turning around. But in her wake has also slipped in darkness - names and faces from the past who mean Tommy no goodwill at all, criminal forces that threaten to ruin him, the hotel and what little happiness he's managed, haplessly, to cobble together. - Doors: 6.30pm, event starts: 7pm, please arrive early to secure a good seat. Tickets are £3and there is a Ticket & Book option which includes a signed copy of Tommy the Bruce. The bookshop has level access, events are seated and speakers use microphones. If you have any concerns about accessibility, please do get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. Refunds are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, we are unable to offer a refund after the event. Free Entry with suggested donations at the event. Self-taught pianist and composer Daniel Inzani has been a pivotal figure on the Bristol alternative music scene for more than a decade. He leads a neoclassical chamber quartet Spindle Ensemble, co-curates Hidden Notes Festivalin Stroud, and he’s worked with a baffling array of outfits, playing Ethiopian funk, Indonesian gamelan, rocksteady, 1950s-style exotica and post rock, as well as working closely with fellow maverick musicians Alabaster dePlume and Cosmo Sheldrake. His assorted projects have led to a prolific discography, performances worldwide and a singular compositional voice; born from extensive experimentation with live ensembles and his idiosyncratic approach to music theory, informed by his studies of mathematics and passion for impressionist era music. After 2 decades of recording, touring and composing as a collaborator and band leader, he gathered a trusted set of skilled improvisers and virtuoso players to record his first major solo release Selected Worlds, exploring the very different sides to his musical personality across 3 contrasting but connected vinyl LPs. The critically acclaimed triple album was co-released by Hidden Notes Records and Tardigrade Records in September 2024, receiving a 5 star review in The Guardian where it was listed as the contemporary album of the month. It's 1882 and the streets of Manchester are crackling with energy, youth and violence. As workers pour into Ancoats to power the Industrial Revolution, 50,000 people are crammed into one square mile. The mills rumble thunderously day and night. The air is thick with smoke. Life is lived large and lived on the street. This is the world's very first industrial suburb and the young mill workers form the very first urban gangs, fighting over their territory with belts, fists and knives. Invisible in history, their lives, deaths, loves, lusts and defiant energy tell stories that will repeat and repeat over the decades that follow. In Georgian Edinburgh, women’s contributions to music and dance—whether as composers, performers, teachers or patrons were often overshadowed, yet their influence was undeniable. Join Alena Shmakova and Frances Scott as they explore the pioneering women of Enlightenment Scotland’s performing arts scene—from the Lady Directresses of Dance Assemblies to the musicians and dancers who helped shape Edinburgh’s cultural landscape. Discover the dances once performed and taught by Marianne Violante and Sofia Parker, as well as the music by talented amateurs like Magdalene Stirling or professionals as Sophia Dussek, whose compositions once filled the city’s salons and concert halls. Through music and dance, this lecture-recital brings to light the often-overlooked women who helped shape Scotland’s artistic legacy. The programme is made possible through funding by the University of the Highlands and Islands Student Development Fund, funded by REC, the Early Dance Circle and support by the European Association for Dance History. Alena Shmakova has studied historical dance since 2006, training with the Historical Dance Society, Nordic Baroque Dancers, and other practitioners. Since 2013, she has taught historical dance in Edinburgh, performing at venues such as Holyrood Palace, Stirling Castle, and Early Dance Festivals. As a researcher, she has received funding to study female patronage in Scotland and the early 19th-century Strathspey style, presenting her work at major dance history conferences. Women in Dance in Scotland, 1500–1800 is part of her research for an MLitt in History at the University of the Highlands and Islands. Alena also teaches historical dance and dance history through the Edinburgh Adult Education programme. Frances Scott was trained at the Royal Northern College of Music as a pianist before joining the music staff of Scottish Ballet. She then moved to Covent Garden as a pianist with the Royal Ballet Company. Fortunate enough to own a harpsichord, she also worked with groups such as Kist o’ Music and Bruntsfield Baroque, giving concerts in St Cecilia’s Hall and the Georgian House. Her interests include Scottish music in the 18th century and female composers and performers. Information Source: St Cecilia's Hall, The University of Edinburgh | eventbrite

Join us at our Edinburgh Airsoft Shooting Range for an Active Targets Shooting Event! Step into the world of precision and focus as you take aim at interactive targets. This dynamic shooting experience combines the thrill of shooting with the challenge of hitting interactive targets, making it a unique and exciting activity for both beginners and experienced shooters. We prioritize safety. Before the session begins, a comprehensive safety brief will be provided. We will also explain the rules before each type of game. Safety glasses will be provided for all beginners. We do not tolerate irresponsible behaviour. If you are a beginner, do not worry - we will explain everything you need to know, how to start, and how to make progress. If you are an experienced airsoft shooter, you will definitely find fun with a different approach to this sport. And you can develop your skills. During the session, all new participants will have a chance to chat with more experienced players about the games and equipment. If you visit our Range for the first time, we can provide all the necessary equipment for an extra charge of £20 (Airsoft replica, 1000 bbs, and safety glasses. Pick up the optional ticket.) SAMPLE GAME SCENARIOS: IPSC-like WALK A bunch of targets and obstacles. You must walk and shoot them as fast as you can. Mandatory reload. Knee position. Pure fun ;) REACTION TEST Targets will light up one by one, with the next target lighting up once a target is either hit or times out. The amount of time a shooter gets to hit a target gradually decreases as the round progresses. Avoid hitting the green targets, which have a 25% chance of appearing. TIME TRIAL Shoot as many targets as possible in a set amount of time. Targets will light up one by one and stay on until shot without timing out. The round is over when the amount of time allotted to the round is up, the round is scored based on how many targets have been hit. Information Source: Airsoft Targets Shooting Range | eventbrite
