Science fiction is any idea that occurs in the head and doesn't exist yet, but soon will. And when it does, it will change everything for everybody, and nothing will ever be the same again. As soon as you have an idea that changes some small part of the world, you are writing science fiction. It is always the art of the possible, never the impossible. This show promises a stacked deck of solo, partner, and group acts, on the ground and in the air, with never a dull moment in between. Join the club and come see this diamond of an act for yourself! Featuring: Natalie Cook (Lyra, Acro) Kaya Gross (Silks, Dancer) Cindy Hui (Hair Hanging, Lyra, Straps, Acro) Sabrina Isabella (Sling) Eric Robins (Diabolo, Trampoline, Acro) Amy Rooney (Straps, Acro) Daniel Trinidad (Straps, Acro) Wild Card Circus What's the deal with wild card circus? Please help us celebrate the poetry collection Phases by Tramaine Suubi , who will be joined by Kembabazi . Please note: This event is free to attend, but registration is requested. Masks are required for our in-person events. In this electrifying debut poetry collection—written with the ferocity of Rita Dove’s groundbreaking Thomas and Beulah —a critically acclaimed award-winning talent explores a wide range of emotions, from anxiety to ecstasy reflecting the moon's phases, from Waning Gibbous to Full. Both intimate and intricately structured Tramaine Suubi’s remarkable work is inspired by the moon—its phases’ effects on water, the Earth, and our bodies. Phases relishes in the beauty of change, even that caused by heartbreak. Suubi’s refreshing, vulnerable verse begs to be underlined, memorized, and shared; each of her poems operate as love letters to the cyclical healing that occurs in nature, in our bodies, and in the bodies that have come before us. Tramaine Suubi - Tramaine Suubi is a multilingual writer from Kampala, and a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. She is the author of phases and stages. She has also published creative writing in over fifteen literary anthologies, journals, magazines, and reviews . Tramaine works towards the total liberation of all oppressed people by any means necessary. Kembabazi - Kembabazi is an Ugandan-American multi-hyphenate community builder who believes humanity’s purpose is to love and be loved. The IRS would probably call her a human service worker. But truly Kembabazi enjoys investing in those around them whether it’s as an in-home caregiver, mutual aid community organizer, after school program educator, or poet/chef/videographer/designer/musician/artist. They’re honored to celebrate another multi-hyphenate who has left an indelible mark on Kembabazi’s soul. Accessibility: This event is hosted at the bookstore, which is a wheelchair accessible space. Masks are required. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis. To request ASL interpretation for this event, please email events@womenandchildrenfirst.com by no later than 14 days before the event. For other questions or access needs, please email events@womenandchildrenfirst.com. Information Source: Women & Children First | eventbrite

In a rare performance, Pakistani musicians Ustad Naseeruddin Saami and the Saami Brothers join forces with Zeb Bangash to explore the spiritual healing power of khayal music. Ustad Naseeruddin Saami is a distinguished classical vocalist, belonging to a lineage of musicians that spans over 800 years. A master of the khayal and dhrupad genres, Ustad Saami is a revered figure in the Delhi Gharana, known for his profound knowledge of classical ragas and his deep, resonant voice. His contributions to South Asian classical music have made him a living legend, and his performances are not just concerts—they are spiritual experiences that bridge the past and present, connecting audiences across cultural and temporal divides. He is returning to SAI and will be joined by his sons, the Saami Brothers, for this special event that carries forward the family’s khayal and qawwali music legacy. Joining the family is Pakistani pop sensation of Coke Studio fame, Zeb Bangash, who is one of Ustad Saami’s star students. Her comedy reminds audiences that they're not alone in pushing their heavy boulders up their steep Sisyphean hills. Christen is an award winning comedian, and an accomplished host and show producer. Join us for our monthly in-person Chi Hack Night! We will be at a new location: i.c.stars ,a non-profit tech training & placement program! Chi Hack Night is a group of thousands of designers, academic researchers, data journalists, activists, policy wonks, web developers and curious citizens who want to make our city more just, equitable, transparent and delightful to live in through data, design and technology. Presentation - Chicago Neighborhood Project For 20 weeks, from November 2023 through April 2024, UChicago researchers collected more than 5,500 responses from residents, identifying more than 100 unique neighborhoods across the city. Hear from the researchers that led this project and some of their findings about how we name different parts of our City. What happens at a hack night? Every week, we have a 45 minute presentation by a government agency, non-profit, company or group who've made use of open data or built a civic technology application. The goal of these presentations is to showcase the different uses and opportunities, as well as challenges and successes in the civic technology movement. After the presentation, the format of the event is similar to that of a hackathon where breakout groups self-organize to work on civic apps, discuss policies and their implications, learn technical skills and network with a welcoming and diverse community at the intersection of technology and government. But I'm not a techie! That's ok! We encourage non-technical folks to pair up and learn from our community's designers and developers. We've seen time and time again, the best civic projects come from teams with a diverse background. Remember, there's much more to making a great app than just coding. ASL interpreting available If you have need for an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter, let us know when you register for the event and we will provide one, provided enough lead time. Questions about the event? We have answers: Q: I won’t be able to make it in person. Will the event be live streamed? A: Yes. The event will be livestreamed on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/chihacknight/live Q: Will there be food? A: Yes! We will be serving Costa Rican empanadas, chicken casado and rice from Irazu ! Looking to meet real people IRL? Welcome to the first step. The Tell Me Why It’s Cool Show produces live events designed to showcase humans and the topics that get them excited. We can’t wait to meet you and learn what you’re passionate about. Do you want to show & tell or are you just here to listen and learn? Join us for a night of laughs and learning. Topics can range from the intricacies of dovetail woodworking joinery to the chemical structure of the 90s sensational nail polish color Unicorn Pee and the conspiracy of selling it on the black market. Check out our instagram to get a vibe for what the show is @tellmewhyitscool_show Presenter gets 5-minutes to tell us why it's cool and then we open it up for Q&A for 3-4 minutes. Sign up online to secure your slot: https://forms.office.com/r/gfMRYyRR7p If you want to present, here are some prompts for what to bring: Have you made something that you’re really proud of, but haven’t had a chance to properly show it off to people? (Kickass spreadsheets and life hacks encouraged!) Is there a subject that you have tons of seemingly pointless knowledge on? We love deep dives into the history or technical aspects of subjects. What was the last thing you did dopamine fueled rabbit hole research into (not necessarily work related)? This show is PG-13. Keep this show free of adult content, excessive swearing, and anything that challenges anyone's religious, political, racial, or sexual identity. We're here to ignite interest in cool stuff, not fuel fires on heated issues. These Open Mics help us book interesting presenters for future shows We hold this open mic to find new storytellers, interesting hobbists, and other cool stuff to learn about. We are booking shows all over the city and we need presenters. Show us what you've got and maybe you'll be invited to present again on future shows or podcast episodes. If you are a topic expert/professional in the adult genre, let us know and we'll chat. We're gathering presenters for an Show & Tell After Dark/Sex Ed show in the future.
