An invented biography, a gothic novel populated by ghosts, and an evocation of a filial love, Melvill contains all the talent, humor, and immense culture found in the other great works from one of Spanish literature's most ambitious writers.Third Place Books is delighted to welcome translator Will Vanderhydenfor a discussion of his translation of Rodrigo Fresán's novel Melvill, published by Open Letter Books. Vanderhyden is also known for translating Fresán's monumetnal Part Trilogy into English (The Invented Part, The Dreamed Part, The Remembered Part). This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Click here for more about our COVID-19 policies for in-person events. Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Melvill. . .A dying father in the grip of fever and delirium recounts his youth, his Grand Tour, the Venetian palaces populated by fascinating and evil figures, his ruin, and his most beautiful journey—the crossing on foot of the frozen Hudson River. His son, still a child, sits at the foot of the bed, attentively collecting these final, hallucinated words. Could the work of Herman Melville—masterful author, misunderstood, far too ahead of his time, and considered crazy and dangerous by some critics—have as its source this ultimate paternal legacy? Questioning the intricacies of fiction, which constantly oscillatates between reality and imagination, Rodrigo Fresán’s approaches the enigma of the literary vocation in a new light. An invented biography, a gothic novel populated by ghosts, and an evocation of a filial love, Melvill contains all the talent, humor, and immense culture found in the other great works from one of Spanish literature's most ambitious writers. Will Vanderhyden is a translator of Spanish-language literature. He has translated work by Carlos Labbé, Rodrigo Fresán, Fernanda García Lao, Dainerys Machado Vento, Andrés Felipe Solano, Laura Fernández, Rodolfo Enrique Fogwill, and Juan Villoro among others. His translations have appeared in journals like Granta, The Paris Review, Two Lines, The Arkansas International, Future Tense, and Southwest Review. He has received translation fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts (2016 and 2023) and a residency fellowship from Lannan Foundation (2015). His translation of The Invented Part by Rodrigo Fresán won the 2018 Best Translated Book Award. The play is about how people of different nationalities and different faiths, who had lived in harmony as neighbors on the same land for decades, were suddenly scattered and divided by some unknown force into us and them. The village of Anatevka, where Russians, Jews, and Ukrainians live side by side, serves as a model of the world: They lived together, worked together, but when it came to dying, each went to their own cemetery. With the wisdom of Sholem Aleichem's prose and the ironic elegance of Grigory Gorin's dramaturgy, in the play, practically every line is filled with life’s wisdom, making you want to either cry or laugh. Bound magic is deadly. Left vulnerable to relentless witch hunters, Ameris will go any length to unbind her magic. Even bargain with Xander, the dangerously attractive fae heir. Caught in a whirlwind of ambition and lust, Ameris agrees to save him in exchange for learning fae magic. Allies are scarce. Trust is a luxury. With the witch hunters closing in, Ameris and Xander enact a blood bond, transporting them to the fae kingdom of Elysium. In a world torn by ancient vendettas and ruled by the shadow king, Oberon, Ameris discovers her unbound magic may be key to the throne. Unbound & used for her power. Xander will use any tool in his quest to rule - including the sexual tension between them, magnified by their blood bond. Oberon will do whatever it takes to keep the throne and make Ameris his. And he's not afraid to play dirty to win. The throne is the prize. Lust is the game. Captured by Oberon, Ameris is seduced by the very darkness she's warned about. Torn between the intoxicating allure of Oberon's shadow magic and her intense bond with Xander, Ameris is left with no choice: Make her claim. Or be bound by blood & shadow. LEWISHazel St. Lewis is a Northern California-based Romantasy author. Diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, she struggled to read and write, but fantasy stories inspired her to start storytelling. Unfortunately, now, she is a little too obsessed with Dracula. When she isn’t writing, she can be found playing with her hoard of cats (too many to count…it’s a problem), singing songs to said cats—like Cinderella—or painting. The Tudor Choir, Doug Fullington, conductor, Saint Mark's Women's Compine, Rebekah Gilmore, conductorThe Tudor Choir, directed by Doug Fullington, and Saint Mark’s Women’s Compline Choir, directed by Rebekah Gilmore, will sing arrangements of Shaker hymns by Kevin Siegfried spanning the last 250 years in a celebration of their music, and their continuing peaceful, artistic, and all-welcoming movement. Please note that in-person ticket pre-sales end 90 minutes prior to the concert. Tickets will still be available at the door. Founded by Doug Fullington in 1993, the Tudor Choir is a Seattle-based vocal chamber ensemble hailed as “a superb choir” (Gramophone) and “a choir to watch” (Fanfare). The choir most recently was a resident ensemble at historic Blessed Sacrament Church in Seattle’s University District from 2008 to 2015 and currently gives periodic performances. The choir has also been Artists-in-Residence at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Seattle; a Resident Ensemble at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Medina; and a Guest Choral Artist at St. James Cathedral, Seattle. The Tudor Choir specializes in Renaissance polyphony and also has been acclaimed for its performances of early American and contemporary music. The choir has performed extensively throughout the Pacific Northwest, including concert appearances in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Portland, Oregon, and has made guest appearances with the Mark Morris Dance Group, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, and Early Music Guild of Seattle. The choir made its East Coast debut in December 2012, performing at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and in Pennsylvania. The Tudor Choir has made a number of recordings for the Loft, Gothic, and Scribe labels. The Tudor Choir also has cultivated relationships with a number of world-renowned conductors and especially with Peter Phillips, director of the Tallis Scholars. Mr. Phillips has conducted the choir in a number of concerts, including joint performances with members of the Tallis Scholars each year at the Tallis Scholars Summer School USA in Seattle since its inception in 2005. The choir also has sung under the direction of Stephen Cleobury (King's College, Cambridge), Martin Haselböck (Vienna), Paul Hillier (Hilliard Ensemble, Theatre of Voices), and Andrew Parrott (Taverner Choir). In the summer of 2019, the Office of Compline was chanted by an ensemble of women for the first time in the six-decade history of Compline at Saint Mark's Cathedral, Seattle. These beautifully-sung services were deeply moving to many. In the word of choir director Rebekah Gilmore, We have many decades—generations worth of women who have wanted to sing Compline at Saint Mark's. And so the decision was made to make the Women's Compline Choir an annual tradition at Saint Mark's each summer. In the summer of 2020, of course, a gathering of the full choir was not possible, and the Women's Compline Choir was represented by just four solo voices. In the summer of 2021, a full complement of singers chanted the office, but the service remained closed to the public. At last in 2022, a full choir featuring some of the finest choral singers in the region returned to chant a service open to one and all. As in the past, the services featured special repertoire for women's voices, including world-premiere compositions Information Source: Saint Mark's Episcopal Cathedral | eventbrite
