Football fans are in for a festive treat with a free tour of St James’ Park thanks to NE1’s 24 Doors of Christmas! Join the stadium’s amazingly knowledgeable tour guides and explore St James’ Park like never before. Walk through the players’ tunnel, sit in your favourite player’s seat in the home dressing room and visit the Media Suite where post-match press conferences and player interviews happen before heading up to one of the stadium’s highest points and taking in a bird’s-eye – or rather, Magpie’s-eye – view of St James’ Park. You wish to teach me what is within myself: learn first what is within you . . . I believe life has no meaning unless one lives it with a will, at least to the limit of one’s will. Paul Gauguin is chiefly known as the giant of post-Impressionist painting whose bold colours and compositions rocked the Western art world. It is less well known how he struggled to sustain his artistry – from a career as a stockbroker in Paris to a door-to-door salesman in Copenhagen, a canal digger in Panama City to a journalist exposing the injustices of French colonial rule in Tahiti. In Wild Thing, the award-winning biographer Sue Prideaux re-examines the adventurous and complicated life of the artist. She illuminates the people, places and ideas that shaped his vision - from his eccentric upbringing in Peru and rebellious youth in France, to the galvanising energy of the Paris art scene and meeting Mette – the woman who he would marry, to the formative encounters with Vincent Van Gogh and August Strindberg and the ceaseless draw of French Polynesia. Prideaux conjures Gauguin’s visual exuberance, his creative epiphanies, his fierce words and his flaws with acuity and sensitivity. NEWCASTLE NOIR 2024 - 10 CRIMINALLY FABULOUS YEARS! 4-7 DECEMBER Newcastle Noir International Crime Writing Festival is so excited to celebrate its 10th Anniversary this year, with 4 days of criminal delights and some exciting fringe events that are new for the festival this year! We’re thrilled that we can celebrate this fabulous bookish milestone with our long-standing partner in crime Newcastle City Library. As ever, we are immensely grateful for their constant support and encouragement since holding the festival there in 2019. As we did last year, we’ll start the festival on Wednesday afternoon with some FREE fun workshops where you can hone your sleuthing skills, and a special author talk. Then from Thursday we’ll have a range of author panels featuring local, national and international authors, including Ann Cleeves, Mari Hannah, Trevor Wood, Louise Candlish and Suk Pannu. In addition, on Thursday and Friday morning, for the budding writers out there, we have a great opportunity to join the Real-Life Writer discussion sessions with author Kitty Murphy and friends.
