Welcome to Emotions and Senses in 18th century Visual Art and Culture ! Join us at Hogarth's House for a fascinating exploration of how emotions and senses were portrayed in art during the 18th century. Recent research has highlighted the nuanced understanding of emotional expression through its historical and contextual relevance. The eighteenth century has been identified by historical scholar such as Retford, Dixon, and Boddice as a critical era of change within emotional landscapes. Art theorists, importantly, have identified the nuanced role art plays in symbolising in an historical era and arousing emotions in its viewers. Build a support system around work Network with other talented artists Find friends & projects! At The BFI Bar Intimate Gathering Producers, Directors, DoP's, Production Designers, Sound Specialists, Actors & Film Students. Why: After graduating last summer, I have found myself on a variety of projects and departments in film. However, I have found myself quite lost at times and in need of a support system that understands what it is like to work in this industry. I know I am not alone, and there are other artists who have moments of weakness and doubting. I would really like to build a community in London or areas surrounding, to help uplift one another and motivate each other with work opportunities. Extra Info: I encourage everyone to bring a +1 woman in film along with them, to broaden the network group, although it is not necessary- you are more than welcome to come alone. Jun 10, 2025 (UTC+1) ENDED
London
Cultural Experiences
A Workshop at the London School of Economics The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has brought renewed urgency to foundational philosophical questions: Could artificial systems ever become conscious, or is consciousness inherently biological? If an artificial system exhibited self-awareness or subjective experience, would it merit moral consideration? And even if machines remain non-conscious, should they nonetheless be granted moral or legal standing based on their functional roles in society? This workshop brings together leading scholars from multiple disciplines—philosophy of mind, biology, and psychology, brain science, political philosophy, and ethics— to critically examine these questions. Topics include the conceptual and empirical challenges of measuring artificial consciousness, the relationship between cognition and sentience, the ethics of treating AI as moral agents or patients, and the socio-political implications of integrating such entities into human decision-making structures. Speakers: Rosa Cao (Stanford, Department of Philosophy) Marta Halina (Cambridge, Department of History and Philosophy of Science) Luca Barlassina (Sheffield, School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanites) Jonathan Birch (LSE, Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method) Katrin Flikschuh (LSE, Department of Government) Tom Bailey (LSE, Department of Government) Jan H. Wasserziehr (LSE, Department of Government) The event is chaired by Prof Katrin Flikschuh (LSE, Department of Government). The event is open to the public, but space is limited and pre-registration is required to attend in person. The workshop will take place in the LSE's Marshall Building, MAR 2.10. If you are external to the LSE, you may have to show your registration to the event at the entrance to the building. Online attendance is possible (no registration required). In the Shadow of the Shard Join Bell Phillips for a film screening of ‘In the Shadow of the Shard’, a documentary by John Rogers that follows estate residents in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe who are taking action to transform where they live. The film tells the inspiring story of the Leathermarket Community Benefit Society, a community group that has successfully built Marklake Court - 27 new 100% council homes on the Kipling Estate—just yards from The Shard. After the film there will be a panel discussion about social housing, co-design and estate regeneration with some of the voices behind the project. The event will end with networking on Bermondsey Square. Marklake Court Bell Phillips co-designed Marklake Court with residents and it has gone on to become a shining example of what a new council house building can achieve when it embraces the true spirit of partnership. Built on the site of under-utilised garages on the Kipling Estate, the new homes created a ‘chain of benefit’, helping to alleviate overcrowding and build a stronger, more connected community. The building opened in 2018 and has positively impacted the lives of 100 families and is the first of several successful developments led by the Leathermarket CBS across Southwark. Panellists Banksie Critchley, Associate at Bell Phillips Architects John Rogers, Filmmaker Tessa Boase, Social Historian and Campaigner John Lynch, founding member of the Leathermarket Community Benefit Society Professor Juliet Davis, Head of the Welsh School of Architecture and author of The Caring City Film Screenings The screening room has limited seating. You will be asked for your preferred screening time (18:30 or 20:30) when booking your tickets. Seats will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis. The Arzner London's first LGBTQ+ Cinema opened in February this year and is located on Bermondsey Square. The Arzner is a fully wheelchair-accessible venue, including an accessible toilet and 2 wheelchair spaces in the screening room. A hearing loop is operated for all screenings. Please let us know when booking your tickets if you have accessibility requirements. Under 18s are welcome, accompanied by an adult, until 20:00. The bar and terrace are dog friendly. Open to all levels — from first-timers to seasoned artists — this session invites participants to engage playfully and reflectively with each other through a series of self portrait drawings. Together we'll experiment with how we see, feel, and represent both ourselves and those around us, using drawing as a language of empathy, curiosity, and perspective. Expect fast-paced sketching, rotating partners, and collaborative creations — all designed to encourage interaction and honest, joyful expression.
