Te Kahu Rolleston: Te Tukanga Ako | National Library of New Zealand
Nov 5, 2024 (UTC+12)ENDED
Wellington
Schools around the country keep me extremely busy visiting and inspiring students to write. Actually, I believe inspiring students to write isn't quite the correct term. What I try my best to do is to show them the joy and safety I was able to find within language: a way to engage with writing that looked after my own mauri and mana as a whakamā writer. Te Kahu Rolleston (Ngāi Te Rangi) is one of the most sought after creative writing educators in Aotearoa. While his slam poetry or rap is commonly requested, the questions he fields most often are around his teaching. How does one capture and hold the attention of over 300 disinterested high school students? How do you get the whakamā student to present their work for the first time? How do you motivate and inspire ākonga to try creative writing? Te Kahu's Pānui, Te Tukanga Ako, presents for the first time his personal approach to teaching. It fuses deeply personal recollection with instructional ako, exploring how these elements inform and shape each other in the classroom and beyond. Join us to experience the transformative power of Te Kahu's ako in what promises to be an unforgettable Pānui. Entry is free, but seating is limited so bookings are essential. Each attendee will receive a limited run copy of this year's Pānui publication. Come along at 5.30pm for a 6pm start, and please join us for a short drinks reception in the foyer following the Pānui. Note that the Pānui is held in the auditorium (entry off Aitken St) rather than in the National Library foyer. About the Pānui The Read NZ Te Pou Muramura Pānui (formerly the Book Council's Annual Lecture) is a prominent part of the literary landscape in Aotearoa New Zealand. It provides an opportunity for a leader within the literary sphere to breathe new life into reading and writing. For more information about these talks, click here.

Anthony Locascio’s Pappou (grandfather) immigrated to Australia from Greece in the 1950s, ferried over to become the top goalkeeper in Australian soccer. This dream came to an abrupt end when Pappou’s fist had a chance encounter with a referree’s head. Being a man was different back then. In 2024, his grandson’s dream of being a stand-up comedian hangs in the balance, as he contends with the challenges of a modern man – staying off the vapes, raising kittens and defeating the corruption of world football from the safety of a podcast microphone. In his 2024 show, Australia’s king of post-ethnic comedy returns with a show juxtaposing these two men to determine whether Anthony is carrying on Pappou’s legacy by chasing his dream, or if he just should’ve become a doctor like his grandfather always wanted. Anthony Locascio is one of Australian comedy’s rising stars. Blending sharp joke writing with musings on his ethnic background, Anthony is best known for his unique storytelling. He completed back to back national tours in 2022 and 2023 with the highly successful ‘Don’t Call Me A Wog!’ and ‘Heart Of Darkness’.These took him to the Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Perth, Newcastle, Wollongong and Sydney Comedy Festivals, as well as indipendant shows in Brisbane and Canberra. He was hand picked for the Perth and Sydney Comedy Festival Galas in 2021 & 2022. “Anthony embodies the thinking man’s comedian, prepared to traverse the publicly taboo and unexplored recesses of the human psyche” ★★★★★ Dark Stories Theatre
