News Carnival
In New Orleans, known for its French Quarter, Bourbon Street, Creole cuisine, and cool Dixieland jazz, there's an event that encompasses all of these: Mardi Gras! The 2025 carnival season will be a time of revelry and romance, madness and music, parades and balls, street comedy costumes, and grand private masked balls. Mardi Gras represents a time when all things grand and magnificent come together for an all-encompassing explosion. New Orleans Mardi Gras features everything from the noble to the comical! In the 12 days leading up to Mardi Gras, over 60 parades, hundreds of private parties, balls, and masked balls are held annually in the metro area. It is a legal holiday in New Orleans, where half the city dresses up to watch the other half parade! The unique custom that makes Mardi Gras most distinctive is the "throws"—small items tossed from floats—which turns New Orleans parades into an unparalleled, participatory event. Over a million people line the parade routes, shouting, "Throw me something, mister!" Among the millions of throws, the most popular are items with krewe logos and parade themes, including plastic drinking cups, medallion necklaces, and colorful aluminum coins called doubloons. In the lead-up to Mardi Gras, New Orleans stores sell a variety of carnival costumes, whether glamorous, vintage, or extravagant, and people prepare their festival attire in advance, vying to be the most dazzling on the street! Dazzled by the colorful displays, choosing the official carnival colors of purple, green, and gold is a sure bet, with purple representing justice, green representing faith, and gold representing power. This March, come to New Orleans to fully immerse yourself in the carnival spirit!

If you are able to understand the few tools & techniques needed to play these individual scenes, every other choice you make on stage will be from a place of renewed confidence and successful fun! Topics include: Thing. Concept. Idea. , The Five Scenes Everyone Tells You *NOT* To Do But Darn It They Come Up On Stage Anyway , Playing Archetypes , Mapping Characters and many, many more. This workshop is dedicated to giving the student “practical applications of improv” and providing replicable good habits/behavior on stage. The goal is to be able to take this workshop during the day and be able to execute the practice immediately on stage that night! BOC (as his friends call him) is part of the comedy collective Dr. God, who recently completed their first feature film project BLOODSUCKING BASTARDS, starring Fran Kranz, Pedro Pascal, Joey Kern, Joel Murray, and Emma Fitzpatrick, which O’Connell directed (his third feature as a director) as well as co-writing the script with Dr. God. The film was the Opening Night Premiere at Slamdance in 2015 and is available now on DVD and On-Demand after it’s theatrical run. A regular performer, coach and teacher in Los Angeles, Brian derives most of his approach to improv from The Deconstruction, the form created by iO’s legendary team, The Family. Well-respected as one of Los Angeles’ premier improvisers, Brian is famous for his encyclopedic knowledge of minutiae and his insane recall ability and memory. Anubis Improv and Big Couch are elated to welcome Brian James O'Connell, a well-regarded improv instructor from the West Coast for workshop and performance opportunities in January 2025. Created by The Family, and under the direction of Del Close himself, The Deconstruction is the single most important long form ever created as it contains every single possible permutation of scene approach and thematic development. An understanding of The Deconstruction is essential for the artistic, intellectual and technical development of an improviser. Quite simply, an improviser’s understanding of the “work” will never be the same after being exposed to “Decon”; whether you perform short form, improvised Shakespeare or are merely a writer looking to improve your understanding of character and structure, learning these skills will radically improve your understanding of improvisation and raise your level of play. About Brian James O'Connell Brian James O’Connell is a working actor, writer, director, filmmaker and teacher in Los Angeles. He taught as part of the Core Faculty at The Pack Theater and at iOWest for over a decade before pursuing his own independent, bespoke & curated student training ALL IMPROV.
