Join us to explore how architecture can adapt to and engage with its surroundings, inspiring new ways to think about the relationship between design and place. We’ll delve deeper into the work of Knox Bhavan, Carmody Groarke and Tonkin Liu, as they discuss their responses to challenging landscapes, as seen in our exhibition, Difficult Sites: Architecture Against the Odds. They’ll highlight the innovative design approaches, creative problem-solving, and collaborative strategies that helped shape these projects, from addressing site-specific challenges to forging strong partnerships with clients to bring their visions to fruition. Following their presentations, the panel will be joined by RIBA Journal Editor Eleanor Young for a group discussion and audience Q&A. Difficult Sites: Architecture Against the Odds is the latest exhibition in the Architecture Gallery at RIBA which explores remarkable feats of architectural achievement in the face of tricky terrain, awkward urban plots, challenging remodels, and more. ChairEleanor Young Editor, RIBA Journal Image by Abi Bansal Eleanor is interested in the good-everyday and the extraordinary in architecture. As editor she writes across the magazine and website and leads on editorial development prioritising climate action and the RIBA Journal's focus on design in the making. Over the last twenty years, Mike has taught and lectured at the AA, the Bartlett School of Architecture, the University of Cambridge, the University of Bath, the RCA and the University of Westminster. His PhD, The Nature of Place, undertaken with the Engineering Department at the University of Bath, demonstrates how a nature-focused storytelling approach can bring innovation to architecture. Sasha Bhavan Director at Knox Bhavan Architects Sasha Bhavan is a founding partner of Knox Bhavan Architects, practising for over 30 years. She is responsible for many beautiful and award-winning projects. These projects range in size and character, including new cafes and hub buildings in parks, works to precious Listed Buildings and a number of acclaimed new houses. She believes in the power of the team; client, professional and builder working together. She has established long-standing successful professional relationships and collaborations with other design professionals, including landscape architects, engineers and contractors. Sasha enjoys teaching the next generation of architects and is a part-time teaching fellow at the University of Bath and external examiner at both Falmouth University and University of Portsmouth. This March, join us for the exclusive opportunity to talk all things sport with the legendary Alistair Brownlee, widely regarded as one of the greatest triathletes in history. Throughout his remarkable career, Alistair has juggled competing at the highest level, co-founding The Brownlee Foundation with his brother Jonny in 2014, and investing in up-and-coming Sports Tech businesses - creating new opportunities for innovation, participation, and impact through sport. With a bit more time on his hands, we’ve finally pinned Alistair down to share fascinating insights on his extraordinary journey so far and the changes he’s seen across the sporting landscape while donning his various hats as an athlete, representative, founder, and investor. Learn the basics of creating jar candles using 100% soy wax and fragrances infused with essential oils. You'll learn how to blend fragrances to create your own unique scent, melt and pour candle wax, and find the right materials to make long-lasting, strong-smelling and clean-burning candles. You'll walk away with a 10 oz candle (to be picked up 2-3 days after class, or shipped to you for a $8 fee). Important: Though you don't have to add fragrance to your candle, others in the class likely will. Fragrance oil is very strong, and the scent carries far; please keep in mind if you are sensitive to smells. About the instructor: Lauren Chunias is a candle maker with a passion for designing scents and pouring candles. She loves the way that scents can evoke memories and transport you to a different place, and can't wait to share that art with you. She has owned & operated Underdog Candles for over 3 years, and her candles are sold in 20+ stores across the US. She holds a bachelor's degree from the College of William & Mary, where she studied business analytics and sustainability. Information Source: Factory 3 Makerspace | eventbrite
