We’re screening four of our favourite films by Sofia, kicking things off with a classic - The Virgin Suicides . About the film In an ordinary suburban house, on a lovely tree-lined street, in the middle of 1970s America, lived the five beautiful, dreamy Lisbon sisters, whose doomed fates indelibly marked the neighborhood boys who to this day continue to obsess over them. A story of love and repression, fantasy and terror, sex and death, memory and longing. It is at its core a mystery story: a heart-rending investigation into the impenetrable, life-altering secrets of American adolescence. Notes about this event Open to everyone over 15. No adverts. Sylvia Pankhurst Annual Birthday Expert Tour | Emmeline Pankhurst statue

Manchester
Conferences
T his tour : Bank Holiday Monday, 5 May 2025, 2.30pm. Meet : Emmeline Pankhurst Statue, St Peter's Square, Manchester. Booking : On Eventbrite. The 5th of May is the birthday of one of Britain’s greatest political activists – Sylvia Pankhurst. She was imprisoned for her beliefs more than any other woman in British political history. She led the campaign for women to have the vote on the same terms of men, in contrast to her more celebrated mother, Emmeline, who was content just for middle class women to have the vote. She was also a gifted artist and an evocative writer, and came from Manchester (well, Old Trafford, near enough; her birthplace has gone unfortunately). When a group of women sold out the Suffragette campaign in 1914, taking money from the once-hated Liberal government in exchange for supporting the pointless Great War, she redoubled the push for parliamentary representation for women and the drive for peace. She became involved in the international women’s peace movement, bringing warring nations together at an international conference in The Hague in 1915 to protest against the World War. When those who had accepted the sop from the government were given the vote in 1918, which meant that only some women were now enfranchised, Sylvia resolutely continued the fight to get women treated the same as men. When that victory was won, she led the drive against a new menace – fascism – ignored by the establishment, Labour, Conservative and Liberal, in the 1920s. Estelle Sylvia Pankhurst was born at Drayton Terrace, Old Trafford, on 5 May 1882. Her father, Richard, was a committed socialist and a strong advocate of women’s suffrage who was the main figure responsible for the drafting of the women’s property bill passed by Parliament in 1870 that allowed married women to own property in their own right. In 1903 Sylvia helped found the Women’s Social and Political Union. She won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. She was a leader and a legend. This is what George Bernard Shaw wrote of her. “Like Joan of Arc she lectured, talked, won and over-ruled statesmen and prelates. She pooh-poohed the plans of generals leading their troops to victory. She had unbounded and quite unconcealed contempt for official opinion, judgement and authority.” Even Lenin lauded her, explaining in 1920 how ‘Comrade Sylvia Pankhurst represents the interests of hundreds upon hundreds of millions of people that are oppressed by the British and other capitalists. This is why she is subjected to a white terror….has been deprived of liberty…’ After the Second World War, in her later years, she emigrated to Ethiopia, whose campaigns against Italian colonialism under Mussolini she had backed so vociferously. She died in Addis Ababa, a heroine of African independence. She is buried in Addis Ababa Cathedral. Information Source: New Manchester Walks | eventbrite

We can't wait to welcome Marnie Riches to the shop for the launch of her latest novel; cosy crime caper THE GARDENER'S CLUB. Marnie will be in conversation with Jessica Bull, author of Miss Austen Investigates. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. Each attendee who purchases a copy of The Gardeners' Club will also receive a free plant - to nurture their own love for gardening.. and crime fiction! About the book: Gardening is dirty work - but should it be deadly? When Gill Swanley decides to take up gardening to fight a midlife malaise, she never expected it to become quite such a dangerous hobby. Pushing herself to 'get out there', Gill picks herself up the secateurs and joins the Bromley Botanists. Here she finds a seven-strong group whose main agenda is how to win the coveted Golden Trowel for best community club of the year. But when a dead body turns up in the community greenhouse, they suddenly have more serious matters to consider than victory. They must uncover whether their arch-rivals, Croydon, are taking things to another level or whether someone more dangerous is targeting their rag tag group. Can they dig up the truth before someone else is left pushing up the daisies? About the author: Marnie Riches grew up on a rough estate in north Manchester. Exchanging the spires of nearby Strangeways prison for those of Cambridge University, she gained a Masters in German & Dutch. Her best-selling, award-winning George McKenzie crime thrillers, tackling the subject of trans-national trafficking, were inspired by her own time spent in The Netherlands. About the host: Jessica Bull grew up in South East London, where she still lives with her husband, two daughters, and far too many pets. She’s addicted to stories and studied English Literature at Bristol University, and Information Science at City University, London. She began work as a librarian (under the false impression she could sit and read all day), before becoming a communications consultant. Her debut novel, Miss Austen Investigates, has sold in eighteen territories and counting. A Fortune Most Fatal is the highly-anticipated second book in the series. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Our event format is usually a 45 minute discussion between the author and interviewer, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions. There will be the opportunity to get your book signed/dedicated after the event. Events are a brilliant opportunity to discover new books, meet authors and likeminded readers and learn something new. Support your local bookshop and help us keep the Manchester literary scene vibrant and exciting. You can follow us on Eventbrite and social media (@BlackwellsMCR) to keep up to date on upcoming events. Information Source: Blackwell's Manchester | eventbrite
