Feb 28–Jun 28, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
Exhibitions
Crescendo: How Art Makes Movements (1981–1999) is a historical survey of multidisciplinary art projects that intersected with Asian American social movements between 1981 and 1999. Largely inspired by jazz and improvised music, art forms central to the Black Arts Movement, the artists featured in this exhibition intended to redefine the presence of Asian Americans and broaden their artistic horizons beyond the politics of representation. Crescendo, the exhibition’s title, is a metaphor to capture the growing sociopolitical activism during this time, which coincided with an artistic and cultural renaissance within the Asian American community, as reflected in major achievements in music, poetry, dance, theater, and opera through collaborative explorations.

Jan 8–Nov 30, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
Exhibitions
The installation highlights picture frames as works of art in their own right, exploring their shifting forms and functions from the altar-like frames of the Renaissance to the experimental, artist-designed frames of the late 1800s. Staged: Studio Photographs from the Collection | Philadelphia Museum of Art

Mar 1–Jun 29, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
Exhibitions
Photography is often thought of as a means to capture the fleeting occurrences and unpredictable juxtapositions of the visual world. But what happens when photographers choose to work within a single enclosed space, exercising near-complete control over everything that happens in front of their lens? Although this premise may sound limiting, artists have long used the blank slate of the studio to create an endless variety of moving, dynamic, and daring images.

Boom: Art and Design in the 1940s | Philadelphia Museum of Art

Apr 12–Sep 1, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
Exhibitions
The 1940s witnessed major shifts in politics, science, economics, industry, the arts, and culture, which coincided with a time of scarcity, limitation, and the catastrophic global conflict of World War II. Throughout this tumultuous period, artists brought new ideas to their work across media, from fashion and textiles, craft and design, to printmaking, drawing, photography, painting, and sculpture. Boom: Art and Design in the 1940s will be a testament to the creative spirit that flourished despite the restrictions and adversity of the era. This exhibition will showcase art from across the decade, featuring works drawn entirely from the museum’s permanent collections.

Firing the Imagination: Japanese Influence on French Ceramics, 1860-1910 | Philadelphia Museum of Art

Aug 31, 2024–May 26, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Philadelphia
Exhibitions
This exhibition brings together notable examples of French ceramics that demonstrate tremendous innovation in the field of artistic pottery from the 1860s to 1910s. European artists during this period were deeply influenced by Japanese art, including woodblock prints, ceramics, textiles, and lacquerwares, which poured into Europe following the forced reopening of Japan’s ports to foreign trade in the 1850s. Part of a broader cultural phenomenon that came to be known as “Japonisme,” artists such as Félix Bracquemond, Ernest Chaplet, Théodore Deck, François Laurin, and Albert-Louis Dammouse incorporated subjects, decorations, and forms inspired by Japanese art into their ceramics while also experimenting with new techniques like barbotine (a method of decorating ceramics with colored clay slips) and glazes imitating highly prized examples of East Asian ceramics.

James Mesiti discusses Petal / Transport | 3601 Walnut St

Literary Arts
What happens when questioning how language is used and significance is given become the primary lens by which the poetic word decides to express itself? When fragmentation and cohesion are both equally at odds but also in harmony? When assurance and certainty avoid being present, however cannot help peeking through the cracks and letting themselves occasionally be known? The result may just be petal / transport. Mesiti's collection quickly becomes a sort of odd artifact that is unsure of itself and appears to hide behind what seems to be experiment but is also confident in the opportunity for poetic reflection it provides. Everything - from meaning to the space of the page itself - is up for grabs and intended to be explored. James Mesiti is a Ph.D. student in Hispanic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. James is an Albany, New York native who studies 20th century Hispanic poetry and, particularly, the poetic links that can bring together the Iberian Peninsula with the Americas. His research also seeks to engage poetry’s approximations to not only other literary genres, such as by means of poetry in prose or poetic prose, but also to other art forms, for example as manifested through visual or experimental poetry. In addition, he authored a book of poems titled Algo de nadie that was released in 2021. Academically prior to his time at Penn, he did a master's in Spanish at Saint Louis University Madrid and a master's in international relations at the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals. He completed his B.A. at Hamilton College. Marta J. Sanchis Ferrer is a Ph.D. student in Spanish and Portuguese at the Univerisity of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on mujeres medicina in Bolivia, Brasil and Uruguay. Marta's doctoral dissertation, tentatively titled “Temporalidades Decoloniales: Curanderas y Other-than-humans”, analyzes literary work by Armonía Somers, Clarice Lispector and Liliana Colanzi, and examines interviews conducted to women healers through the lens of decolonial frameworks. Reviews “Reading James Mesiti, I am always overcome with the feeling that I have stumbled upon a trove of correspondence left on boulders, or under trees, gift-communiques between slightly mischievous nature spirits, fjallvættir scribbling to sjóvættir, which leave me feeling re-enchanted with the world.” – Jay Kirk Information Source: Penn Bookstore | eventbrite
