'Dear Amelia' is a series of letters written by Tomáš Hlava in 2024 to a typeface designed by Stanley Davis in 1963. Named Amelia, after his first-born daughter, it was submitted for the VGC Phototypesetting competition in 1965 and selected as the winning typeface; this is how the world got to know her for the first time. Given the context of the time, the new technology of phototypesetting, and the blurred boundaries of censorship in the type design field, Amelia's strokes were copied and resold by other type foundries. Davis didn't know his typeface had been published until he saw a TV promo for the film Yellow Submarine. “That was a double whammy for an avid Beatle fan,” Davis said. “Bitstream and Linotype stole my Amelia,” he added in a rare interview in 2002. Since 2018, Hlava has been encountering and uncovering the mystery Amelia is wrapped in. Dear Amelia' is an attempt to (re)connect these personal and typographic histories through the epistolary form. In these letters he describes how people got to see Amelia for the first time, the plagiarism the type foundries committed, his first encounters with Amelia in the Czech Mountains, and the moment he got to know her name. Later, he writes about the moment he decided to go to the place where Stanley Davis lived, Saugerties in upstate New York. There, through a series of coincidences, Amelia the typeface and Amelia the person begin to blur. Information Source: The Herb Lubalin Study Center & Type@Cooper | eventbrite

I’M NOT AN ACTOR Director: Aditya Kripalani Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Chitrangada satarupa Language: Hindi, English, German Length: 2 Hours Year: 2025 Synopsis: Mouni is a puritanical actor who hates Mumbai. She hates the commerce that overshadows the art each day and life here in general. It is her deepest dream to move abroad to any part of Europe and do Shakespeare. She ends up at an online audition with Adnan, a 55 year old Kashmiri Muslim man, who’s now a retired banker living in Frankfurt, Germany.Adnan is depressed and having just retired he’s desperately seeking a new sense of self. After the audition in which Mouni improvises to make Adnan react genuinely, they're both shortlisted. Shocked with the power of acting, he begs her to teach him. This sets off a day long acting class between two countries and two very different people over a long video call. It unravels their pasts, their fears, their pains and joys and leaves them changed. Like any good acting class should. We explore both Mumbai, dirty, grimy, soiled, dark, dense, intense and Frankfurt, squeaky clean, bright, colorful and as we see with the people, so also we see with the cities, that at the heart they're very similar. But acting is psychology. And now they both must learn to be vulnerable. To trust. Aditya Kripalani is a writer, director, and producer based in Frankfurt, Germany. A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India’s Script Writing program, he has been a writer who’s written for advertising, novels and feature films. And all his characters are grappling with society and their relationship with it. There is a nudging of viewers and readers to introspect upon their habits, in all his work. His work almost always consists of people from the minority community fighting for equality and their right to the dignity of work and an everyday existence. Almost all his films have women protagonists and he works hard at eliminating the male gaze by bringing on board collaborators as equals who are all women, be it the DOP, the Editor, the Producer, the Art director, the Costume stylist, the Hair & Makeup team, the Executive Producer etc. He also produces films made by women. As a writer, director & producer, Aditya has films under his belt which have been awarded various prestigious International awards. His latest feature film,’Not Today’ which deals with the sensitive topic of suicide prevention won the prestigious International Critics 'FIPRESCI Award'. Aditya’s third feature film, ‘Devi Aur Hero’ (The Goddess and the Hero) which deals with sex addiction and mental disorder, won the NETPAC award for Best film award at the 25th Kolkata International Film Festival. His first 2 films Tikli & Laxmi Bomb and The Incessant Fear of Rape both feminist films streamed on Netflix globally for 4 years each. Information Source: Indo-American Arts Council | eventbrite

This is a 2-day in-person workshop meeting Wednesday, June 25 & Thursday, June 26 from 10 am to 5 pm. Typographics Conference (in-person) ticket holders can have a 10% discount on this workshop. Write to type@cooper.edu for the promo-code to take advantage of this offer before you pay. Have you ever wanted to build a tower made of letters? Wouldn’t it be fun to knock it over and watch all the glyphs crash into each other? Or what about an entire paragraph of text that can float like helium balloons? And what if you took a really nice shallow depth-of-field photograph of those balloons as they flew away into an orange sunset? This two-day workshop will focus on building and animating typography in three dimensions using the open-source program Blender and ST2, an extension that brings high-quality — and cutting-edge — typography to Blender. We’ll begin with an introduction to Blender: making objects, moving them around in three dimensions, creating simple lighting setups, getting the virtual camera in just the right spot with just the right aperture and focal length. And then we’ll jump into typography with ST2: choosing fonts, animating variable fonts, making words crash into each other, filling letters with (virtual) helium, throwing letters into (virtual) pools of water, reflecting letters in (virtual) funhouse mirrors — the options are truly endless. If time allows, we’ll also unlock procedural workflows in Blender, using both their Geometry Nodes visual programming language and Python for text-based scripting. By the end of the class, you’ll have your very own photorealistic 3D typography animation. What do you need to take this workshop? Just a laptop, an interest in graphic design, and a willingness to spend some time learning a somewhat odd program. (Blender is famous for its quirky — but powerful — interface.) Blender and ST2 are completely free and open source, but it would help if your laptop is fairly recent and/or powerful. Blender runs on almost all computers on Mac, Linux, and Windows, but it can get into trouble on older computers, and is in general more fun to use on computers that have some solid processing power. Here’s a page detailing the minimum system requirements. You might also want to be familiar with a video editing program (like Premiere or DaVinci Resolve) to put the final touches on your animations, though that’s more of a nice-to-have. After studying architectural history at Columbia University, Rob worked for a time as a programmer in San Francisco before starting Goodhertz, Inc., an audio software company, where he currently works on audio plugin interfaces, a programming library called Coldtype, and lots of videos that combine typography and music. Rob also plays clawhammer banjo, enjoys looking at buildings, and would love to talk to you about replacing your gas appliances with electric ones. This race course will be loosely based on the 'DiNoto's Bread' delivery route of my Dad, John DiNoto. A little about the origin of this race series below. In the 1920's my Great Grandfather managed to start up a grocery store in the Bronx. He built this business from nothing, his son (my grandfather) would bake fresh Italian bread for their customers in their little basement. He told me once the smoke from the oven would accumulate and force him to bend down, simutaneously the basement would flood. He would be there, hunched over, knee deep in water baking the bread in the early morning hours. By the time the city was waking up my grandfather would already be delivering the fresh baked bread to apts across the neighborhood. Running up the stairs of one building, dropping bread off to indivudual apartments, he would make his way to the roof where he would work his way down the stairs again, dropping off to customers as he went. DiNoto's Bakery would eventually take off in the 1940's with my grandfather and his brothers creating a very successful business that would feed our family, and many other families, for decades to come. My dad grew up in the bakery and when he was old enough he would work there. When I was a kid he would take me and my brother with him to work, we'd be up by 2:00am and on the road to the Bronx. We'd start at the bakery where my grandfather, uncles and cousins were working through the night. The guys would load up my dad's truck with the day's deliveries while he made us lightand sweet coffees to keep is up for the long day ahead. This race, specifically this course, is my love letter to those childhood memories of my dad, my brother, and I having the city to ourselves as we drove from UPTOWN to DOWNTOWN dropping off bread to the bodegas and restaurants. The OSR Bread Route Races are designed to mimic the late night delivery routes that my father, grandfather and uncles would take dropping off my grandfather's bread. Image by Ash Gilbertson 2024 Event Information: There will be no HQ or restrooms. We will be meeting on the street. OSR will provide a mobile bag check (please bring the bare minimum).
