The play is about how people of different nationalities and different faiths, who had lived in harmony as neighbors on the same land for decades, were suddenly scattered and divided by some unknown force into us and them. The village of Anatevka, where Russians, Jews, and Ukrainians live side by side, serves as a model of the world: They lived together, worked together, but when it came to dying, each went to their own cemetery. With the wisdom of Sholem Aleichem's prose and the ironic elegance of Grigory Gorin's dramaturgy, in the play, practically every line is filled with life’s wisdom, making you want to either cry or laugh. NEED TO KNOWS Improv Roulette! Saturday March 1st, 4:00pm - 6:30pm Kevin Vidal and Terry Say welcome you to 'Improv Roulette,' an unhinged jam show that turns the spotlight onto the audience and makes them the stars of the night. Here’s the deal: grab a ticket and come on down to China Cloud where you, yes YOU get to play in the show (unless you just want to watch!). Before each scene, you pull a numbered card, revealing an improv game and Kevin will pick two, three or five people, and throws those folks into that picked scene, game, or challenge. You don’t know who you’ll play with, what you’ll be playing or what will happen, but that’s roulette baby. Heck, that’s improv. 'Improv Roulette' is an inclusive experience that caters to all levels of expertise, from beginners taking their first comedic steps to seasoned vets who know how to deliver the punchline. Blind Tiger students are of course welcome, but so are improvisers from outside BTC. We’re going to laugh and laugh, y’all. Whether you come to play or just to watch this show, don’t miss it. Running the first Saturday of each month, 5:00-6:30pm (before Treat Show at 7:30), this show is a gamble that will pay off…in comedy. TICKETS $10 or a limited number of 'Pay What You Can Tickets' LOCATION China Cloud Studios - 524 Main Street. It is on the east side of Main Street, between Pender and Keefer. Look for the address (524 Main St) above a black door with the cloud on it. For a detailed (and fun) introduction to finding the space, see our Instagram series (in the story highlights) introducing China Cloud. Unfortunately this venue has limited accessibility due to a steep staircase at the entrance. We are grateful to be performing on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səlí̓lwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. How might windows serve as a dual metaphor—a lens to the outside world and a mirror reflecting the self? Join acclaimed poets Doretta Lau and Holly Flauto on Saturday, March 1 at 9am for an immersive poetry workshop on perspective, reflection, and transformation. The barriers we pass through, both in body and in metaphor, can be destabilizing. But what if we lingered in these midway spaces? In this workshop, participants will create poems based on a series of guided writing activities exploring the self as viewed through glass and frame. Refine your craft, express your creativity, and write in community. This free-or-by-donation workshop is designed for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned poet looking to refine your craft or a newcomer curious about exploring the world of poetry. Paper and writing utensils will be provided. Space is limited so please register to reserve your spot! More about the facilitating poets: Doretta Lau started watching horror movies at age nine and sketch comedy at eleven, which was probably why she ended up completing an MFA in Writing at Columbia University. The Atlantic named her short story collection, How Does a Single Blade of Grass Thank the Sun?, as a best book of 2014. The title story was shortlisted for the 2013 Writers’ Trust McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize. Her forthcoming novel We Are Underlings is about a dysfunctional workplace struggling to open a theme park that celebrates death. She is developing a television show for FX based on this book with Pulitzer Prize–winning writer Eboni Booth. Holly Flauto lives and writes on the traditional, ancestral and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Selilwitulh Nations. Her book of poetry, Permission to Settle, one of CBC Books Best Canadian Poetry of 2024, fills in the blanks of the application for Permanent Residency with a series of memoir-based poems that investigate the implicit biases in the colonial system of boxes and check marks that still seek to categorize the other and to harness it in the face of reconciliation. Holly grew up moving between the US and South America; she immigrated to Canada in 2008. Holly teaches writing in the English department at Capilano University. More about Upstart & Crow: Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers, readers and stories, and the role they play in shaping our lives. Ever since Mariya Takeuchi’s Plastic Love mysteriously went viral on YouTube in 2017, funky Japanese pop music from the late 70s and 80s (collectively known as City Pop) has slowly solidified itself as a mainstay of global internet culture. Through the bittersweet yet relentlessly catchy melodies, slappin’ basslines, energetic disco beats, and ample amounts of reverb; listeners vicariously conjure the memories of a nation basking at the height of economic boom, blissfully unaware of the bright future that will never materialize. Brought to you by local jazz-fusion group Chen Baker, City Pop Nights will attempt to bring you said experience in the flesh. The night will mostly consist of hits from genre staples such as Miki Matsubara, Taeko Ohnuki, Tasturo Yamashita, and Casiopea; along with Western songs that also echo the sentiment. Mia Wang - vocals Xirui Wang - vocals Neal Wang - Alto Sax Jeffrey Chen - guitar Justin Juan - keys Dario Acosta - Drums Piyotr Kao - Bass City Pop Featuring Chen Baker is presented by Infidels Jazz March 08th Fox Cabaret 2321 Main Street Doors Open: 7PM Tickets: $25 in advance, $30 at the door 19+ Seating will be limited for this event. Liars of Orpheus is a literary/spoken word show that revolves around writers attempting to lie their way through stories, poems and lectures.
