A Little bit about the book: Something old, something new, someone borrowed… Forty years ago, sixteen-year-old David was heartbroken when his family rejected him for coming out. Since then, he has vowed to always help anyone in need. So, when he finds a tearful young woman outside his flower shop, he can’t just walk away. Newly engaged, Meg should be overjoyed, but her conservative parents have made their disapproval painfully clear – leaving Meg devastated and wanting to call the whole wedding off. But David won’t let another young person be rejected. He offers to be Meg’s ‘stand-in dad’, diving headfirst into dress fittings, cake tastings, and venue visits to make sure Meg’s special day is unforgettable. Yet Meg’s parents’ absence looms large – and when disaster strikes, can David save the wedding in time? A little bit about the author: Alex Summers is the pseudonym for Jake Williams, a queer and neurodivergent writer from Milton Keynes who now lives in London with his partner. When he is not writing, he is reading or swimming. The Stand-in Dad is his first novel. You can find him on Twitter and Instagram under @jakeshaker. A little bit about the host: Andrew Flewitt (he/him) is the creator and host of Queer I Am, The Podcast, which has been nominated for an Independent Podcast Award. Andrew has been featured in Podbible, DIVA, BBC Radio Sussex, Latest TV Brighton, Scene Magazine and GX Magazine. They are based in Brighton, UK. Do You Believe in Life After Loss? is their first book. Information Source: Kemptown Bookshop | eventbrite

Paint your own Large Abstract Painting workshop in Brighton | Lawrence Art Studio

Arts Painting
This isn’t a typical painting adult art class in Brighton. This isn’t a “paint by numbers” class or “copy how I paint” approach. In this workshop we will do things differently: The main tool we will be using is not the brush. It’s our mind - free from limitations. We will paint intuitively! Spontaneously to the music, allowing the paint to evolve and reveal itself freely into an explosion of colours, patterns, marks, shapes, texture on the canvas. We will paint big! Big brush movements, a bold colour pallet and even the fingers. The intention is to let go of any expectations. We will get messy! This is not about making pretty things. It’s rare opportunity to let go of perfectionism and experiment with a wide range of art materials (acrylic, watercolours, pastels, chalk etc) to free our inner artist and find our creative voice in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We will get creative! Art has no limitations, we use every day tools: window squeegee, credit card, bubble wrap, fork, scraper, feather, chopstick, ANYTHING to get our imagination going! Suddenly the concept of “painting” expands! It’s a painting wonderland full of possibilities. We will free ourselves from limiting beliefs! This dynamic and creative free-flow painting style will move us through past fears, creative blocks and self-doubt into joy and freedom! We will express ourselves! By opening our mind and listening to our heart, we can express our soul without boundaries or judgments. While experimenting with painting, we will build a relationship with who we are, reconnect to our inner child and fully express ourselves including the wisdom that is forever inside us. There is such freedom and joy in this! Who is this class for? This is a safe space for anyone! Even those who think they aren’t creative or can’t paint or draw. Also, this is a great opportunity for creative types who haven’t picked up a paintbrush in a while but are longing to express themselves through art. We can play and feel like a kid again without worrying about the end result. Nobody will judge what we create together. We are all on a journey to find our inner artist. The people who come to this class are from all walks of life: freelancers, entrepreneurs, website designers, yoga teachers, success coaches, parents….whatever! This could be fun and creative way to celebrate your birthday, anniversary or any other occasion (corporate team building) in Brighton, perfect Xmas gift too. What to expect on the day? Through fun, guided group and individual exercises we’ll explore wide range of art materials, experiment with an unconventional tools and try many abstract painting techniques including layering, mark making, texture. After a delicious lunch together, you will have time to develop your own intuitive painting on large canvas which you will take home with you at the end of the workshop. Join the audience for an engaging talk about the extraordinary life of David Hockney, presented in the form of a captivating graphic novel-style biography by Simon Elliott. This enlightening illustrated discussion follows the remarkable journey of Hockney's life, from his humble beginnings in Bradford to his early breakthrough as an artist. Delve into his vibrant and sun-soaked period in Los Angeles, and witness his triumphant return to the United Kingdom. This delightful book beautifully traces the captivating life and times of one of the most beloved artists in the world. Drawing inspiration from Hockney's powerful message that "spring cannot be cancelled," Simon immersed himself in Hockney's art, even learning to paint on an iPad as a tribute to Hockney's own iconic iPad drawings. Simon embarked on a colorful and joyous journey to create this biography with a twist. Simon Elliott, a criminal barrister, art enthusiast, and stand-up comedian, was granted the privilege of using and adapting Hockney's artwork with the artist's blessing. Rather than simply copying Hockney's work, Simon aimed to depict its essence and convey the underlying ideas in an informative and amusing manner. Hockney's life has been filled with excitement and laughter, and Simon sought to reflect that spirit in this masterpiece. Simon's work is a tribute to Hockney's uplifting message during the lockdown that resonated deeply with him. This graphic life story also highlights the joy, significance, and mindfulness benefits of creating art. In the spirit of inclusivity, all our events, including this one, are free. However, we kindly request that you only register if you genuinely plan to attend. If you are unable to make it, please inform us as soon as possible. We appreciate your understanding, as excessive no-shows can be challenging for us as a bookshop and disappointing for the author. Thank you for your cooperation.

Renowned photographer and filmmaker, Jack Latham, will be discussing his compelling new book, 'Beggar's Honey', at the Photo Fringe Artist Talk event. This thought-provoking publication delves into the secretive world of click-farming and the prevalence of fake followers in social media. Latham's work sheds light on the dark underbelly of click farms, which artificially inflate engagement metrics and manipulate algorithms with far-reaching consequences. These operations have the power to influence consumer behavior and undermine the integrity of democratic processes. To gain insight into this industry, Latham purchased his own click farm and documented the content he was instructed to manipulate. 'Beggar's Honey' pairs images of this manipulated content with photographs captured after gaining access to click farms in Vietnam and Hong Kong. This groundbreaking project has already received recognition, with an honorable mention from the prestigious Grand Prix Images Vevey 2019/2020 jury, chaired by Dayanita Singh. 'Beggar's Honey' has been made possible through the support of Images Vevey, the Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation, Heidi.news, Here Press, and Images Vevey. Join us for this insightful artist talk, taking place at the Phoenix Art Space in Brighton on November 22, 2023. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend and contribute to this important dialogue.
