On Friday 31st January 2025 at 5.15pm the Trapdoor @ UCD and the UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics are hosting the newly-commissioned choral composition, sung by the renowned Dublin-based choir the Mornington Singers under conductor Dr Orla Flanagan. This is the world première of a freshly composed work by Irish composer Dr Gráinne Mulvey to accompany a poem inspired by Ferdinand de Saussure, and written by London-based Hungarian poet Zsuzsanna Ardò. The performance will be acccompanied by a short discussion around Saussure chaired by Dr Síofra Pierse and will be followed by a reception. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Poems: Szuzsanna Ardó Zsuzsanna Ardó is human by inclination, humorous, curious and creative by nature — and an award-winning visual artist and writer by profession. Her work has received awards and been awarded artist residencies by various organisations, e.g. Arts Council England, High Arctic Expedition, AL New York, Frankfurter Kunstverein, Il Bisonte Florence, Britten Pears Arts, Tyrone Guthrie Centre, European Artists, UNESCO. Music: Gráinne Mulvey Gráinne Mulvey is a composer of acoustic and electronic music. She also likes to collaborate with other art forms particularly video, dance, art installations and liaise with improv groups. Mornington Singers conducted by Órla Flanagan Mornington Singers is an award-winning mixed-voice chamber choir based in Dublin, Ireland and conducted by Orla Flanagan. Mornington Singers was the winner of the 4th International Baltic Sea Choir Competition held in Jūrmala, Latvia in September 2019. The choir was named Ireland’s Choir of the Year 2019 at the 65th Cork International Choral Festival.
