Please do consider a donation.Even the smallest donation goes a long way in helping us deliver our nature outreach work. This is an in-person event ONLY. Join us for an evening event on the tree that grows lace. Lace-bark is a form of bark-cloth, obtained from the lagetto tree. In colonial Caribbean, the fibres of the lagetto bark were removed by hand and dried, and the end result resembled fine lace or linen that was used by enslaved and freed women to make clothing, or as a substitute for manufactured lace to create beautiful fans, doyleys, book covers and other belongings. Join us to hear from three speakers who will reveal not only the complex botanical structures of the tree that grows lace, but also the hidden lives of the Caribbean women who created the complex chain from living plant to clothing. While exploring lace bark’s colonial past, we will look to the future as well: as the lagetto tree faces extinction, we risk the loss of the needlework practices that depended on the lace, as well as the loss of the tree’s medicinal properties. How can botanists, historians and artists work together to recuperate Caribbean plant knowledge and practice? Forensic botanist and botanical curator Mark Spencerwill introduce the Lagetta lagetto, a species of tree native to several Caribbean islands. Cultural historian Professor Steeve O. Buckridgewill talk about the cultural history of lace bark, and about the ongoing fight against the extinction of the lace bark tree and the disappearance of the dressmaking and needlework cultures associated with it. Artist Charmaine Watkisswill talk about her Plant Warriors series and how she has used historical research into the twin histories of slavery and botany to support her artistic practice. The event is chaired by Emily Senior. If you'd like to stay updated about our events programme, and other news, please subscribe to our monthly newsletter here. Terms and Conditions. Leslie Ewing-Burgesse is cursed. Yeah. She is. Like really, reaaaaalllly cursed. Absolutely riddled with curses. Yeahhhhhhh. Hahaha, uh oh, right? Hard to know what to say about that. Oh, another thing. Yeah, there’s more. You’re probably cursed too. Yeah, sorry. Yeah, it’s pretty bad news. But! There’s nothing that brings Leslie more joy than chatting about the weird and the spooky, and she has a sneaking suspicion that she can solve this... Reading Shakespeare can be pretty daunting, and so much of the best stuff is hidden behind what feels like impenetrable language. I've loved the Shakespeare I've read, but I find it hard to crack open my massive anthology out and just start reading when I'm also trying to live my life (and just about managing to pay rent lol). I've spoken to quite a few people who said that even just for the novelty, they'd like to read and discuss some Shakespeare plays and try and demystify the elements of the plays that make them seem inaccessible unless Tom Holland is flailing his arms about in a ruffled shirt as Romeo on the West End. I'm hoping that every month, we can try and tackle a new play. We can meet, relax and chat about the plays, discuss what we all thought about them, the good, the bad and everything in between, as well as it just being a nice break from being buffeted by people during peak time trips to Aldi in Peckham or the stress of holding people up on the bus when you can't tap in because TfL took £3.50 overnight so now you have to transfer money into your account before you get on and everyone behind you is tutting. Whether you're a photography enthusiast or simply appreciate great art, this event is perfect for anyone looking to dive into the world of visual storytelling. Don't miss this opportunity to meet the artist and gain insight into the world of photography and film. Tom Hunter is an artist using photography and film, living and working in East London. He is Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and has an Honorary Doctorate from the University of East London. Tom has earned several awards during his career, including the Rose Award for Photography at the Royal Academy, London and the Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Tom Hunter’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in major solo and group shows including: Life and Death in Hackney, National Gallery Washington D.C. USA; Seduced by Art, National Gallery, UK; A Palace for Us, Serpentine Gallery, UK; Another Story, Photography from the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden. He has published eight books including, Down The Lane (Cafe Royal Books 2020), Where Have All The Flowers Gone (Hartman Projects 2019), Le Crowbar (Here Press 2013) The Way Home (Hatje Cantz, 2012). In The Way Home, you get a strong feel for the way he operate on a variety of levels: referencing important paintings from art history, while telling us stories of our time―stories that all take place in the London borough of Hackney, where Hunter lives. What is perhaps his best-known photograph is of a young woman in a setting that alludes to Vermeer’s Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window. However, Hunter’s photo portrays a Woman Reading a Possession Order―a neighbor from the squatter’s scene who has just received an eviction notice. The work attracted so such attention from the media that the eviction ultimately never took place. With his eye for the unusual and exotic in everyday life, Hunter succeeds in capturing striking, remarkable snapshots of life in Great Britain today. The tutors are superb, they have so much knowledge and nothing is too much trouble As soon as you walk into this space you feel welcome, a few of us were here for a one-off class.
