A series of outdoor workshops on how to identify plants, their cultural and ecological importance, and the multiple ways we can preserve and process them for modern use. In this series we will center our meetings around The Elder, a tree known as a mother for its generosity in all that it provides.Often overlooked when not in bloom, the Elder is a culturally important tree full of folklore, tradition, and many practical, medicinal and culinary uses. This will be a chance to really get to know and develop a relationship with a plant, from buds to flowers, berries to bare branches and fungus. In each stage of growth we will explore how to preserve different parts of the tree, going way beyond elderflower cordial. We will use our meetings to explore the ways people used to commune with trees could be brought into our lives as an act of resistance to modern malaise, creating a feeling of connection not only with the plant and the world around us but with each other too. Each meeting will provide you with the opportunity for foraging, preserving, crafting and discussion. Aashish Solanki is back with a brand-new hour, and life’s a little different now. He’s a new dad—still figuring out how to be a parent while surviving on coffee and jokes. Lady Lamb with Jacob Augustine @ Broadturn Farm | Broadturn Farm

Lady Lamb with Jacob Augustine @ Broadturn Farm | Broadturn Farm

Aug 22, 2025 (UTC-4)
Scarborough
Concerts
As one of the crown jewels of our summer, we're thrilled to host Lady Lamb, an all-time SPACE fave and one of Maine's true indie-rock pride 'n' joys, for an evening at the beautiful rustic setting of Broadturn Farm in Scarborough. Tickets are available for the concert and as a two-day package with FEASTLAND 2025, also at Broadturn Farm the following night. From her early days, staying late after-hours at her video rental store job in Maine to record songs, to co-producing and arranging her four studio records, Aly Spaltro has remained focused on music that connects, empowers and builds community. She built her fanship the old-fashioned way, getting in front of audiences and projecting her poetic confessionals, silencing rowdy crowds with an a cappella opening song in the center of a dark stage. Spaltro was quick to develop a reputation as a breakout star in New England, and then expanded slowly outwards, moving to New York at twenty to continue work on the songs that would become Ripely Pine . Her voice has never wavered, has grown more honest and open with time, and anyone witnessing the long lines of fans seeking signatures after her performances can see how her work has impacted fans. Her live shows are revelations, a further deep dive into what makes Ripely Pine such a mainstay. Spaltro is celebrating ten years of Ripely Pine with the release of a 5xLP Box Set, IN THE MAMMOTH NOTHING OF THE NIGHT out August 18 on Ba Da Bing Records. With the original songs remastered, as well as reams of additional material produced and arranged by Spaltro and mixed by original co- producer Nadim Issa, IN THE MAMMOTH NOTHING OF THE NIGHT captures the time, mood, art and ambition of Aly Spaltro in her early twenties, who had already accumulated years of playing and self-recording experience before laying down tracks for this giant of a debut. “I wrote some of these songs when I was 18, learning how to play the instruments and record with my digital 8-track along the way,” Spaltro says, reflecting on the time. She talks about IN THE MAMMOTH NOTHING OF THE NIGHT with a sense of a mission. “These tracks have haunted me, because they haven’t had a home for all these years. I found all these alternate track listings in my notebooks. Any of them could have ended up on the record,” Spaltro says. “This box set is a way to honor that whole time, the beginning of the path of my life. Releasing this project feels like just that; I’m able to look back on where I’ve come from, and then gently close that door behind me and keep moving, keep growing.” Co-presented by Portland Food Co-op and Cassidy Point Jacob Augustine is an experimental folk musician from the northern woods of Maine. Over his two decades as one of the most influential and beloved vocalists and songwriters in the state, he’s reached an enigmatic, near mythic status; touring the country back and forth, releasing records in a flurry, headlining bigger and bigger stages, then disappearing from public eye for years at a time, and back again. Augustine’s records range from heavily-orchestrated, bombastic full-band affairs to raw, stripped-down solo recordings to eccentric, genre-hopping studio projects, but they also center his immediately recognizable voice. The Portland Press Herald writes, “Jacob Augustine has one gilded set of pipes. A diamond in the rough.” Information Source: SPACE | eventbrite

Cultural Experiences
A two-day course giving participants the skills and confidence to assess habitats, both in terms of type and quality. the ability to identify indicator species an overview of some key UKHAB, Phase I and NVC communities a chance to do quadrat sampling and share ideas with colleagues a chance to see a broad range of lowland habitat types including improved and unimproved grassland, calcareous grassland, wet meadows, acid grassland, heathland and mire communities The purpose of much botanical survey is to tell us what is going on in the landscape around us – is it being over-managed, or unmanaged? Has the land been subject to agricultural improvement? What type of soil is it? Is it a habitat which is likely to support a wide range of species? This course will focus on how to identify the key indicator species for improved and semi-improved grasslands, floodplain meadows, calcareous grasslands, acid grasslands, dry and wet lowland heath and mires. There will be reference to, but not in depth discussion of, Phase I, UKHAB and NVC communities. Whilst aimed at beginners, these courses are more likely to be enjoyed with a basic level of prior plant ID skills, and they form an ideal follow-on from the training courses earlier in the year. About the tutor Dominic Price is a highly regarded botanical tutor and has been running courses for all levels of ecologists since 2007. He is director of The Species Recovery Trust and specialises in the conservation of endangered species. He is the author of A Field Guide to Grasses, Sedges and Rushes, and co-author of A Field Guide to Bryophytes and The Photographic Guide to Winter Trees and Shrubs. Schedule Day 1: This day will focus on calcareous and neutral grasslands, covering species-rich chalk grassland, species-poor improved grassland and marshy grassland on the Avon Floodplain 10.05 Arrive on site - Old Sarum. 10.15 First tutorial session – improved and SI grassland 10.45 Mesotrophic and chalk grassland 12.30 Lunch (or shorter if weather bad) 1.15 Wet grassland on the Avon Valley 3.10 Calcareous Grasslands at Camp Down 3.45 Return to Old Sarum c. 4:00 End Day 2: This day will focus on acidic habitats, covering the key species which make up acid grassland, dry and wet heath, and mire and bog habitats. 9:45 Arrival on site - New Forest 10.00 Acid Grassland/Dry Heath and damp flushes 12.30 Lunch (or shorter if weather bad) 1.20 Heaths and bogs (+dry heath) c. 3:30 Depart What to bring Water, snacks, firm boots (some steep banks). Please wear long trousers for the second day to minimise exposure to ticks (on this day there is a short amount of walking involved, and some ground will be boggy). Please bring packed lunch on both days £3 for parking at Old Sarum (contactless payment available) Ice creams should be available both days! The recommended text for the course is 'A Field Guide to Grasses, Sedges and Rushes' by Dominic Price. Available to purchase on the day, in the ticket options, or in advance here . Any problems on the day please call Dominic Price on (07968) 786390. Please inform us of any relevant medical requirements/conditions we should be aware of prior to the course. Lifts available from Salisbury station on request. Hugely Important Information The second day of the course is in the New Forest, so if you are booking overnight accommodation you may wish to stay nearer there (if you find somewhere nice it's a fantastic chance to go out for an evening and listen to Nightjar). Please do not come to Old Sarum on the second day as you will miss a significant part of the morning driving on to the New Forest. On the first day the gates to Old Sarum do not open until 10am, so please do not attempt to enter the site before 10:05am as it very quickly blocks the access track if there is a delay in site opening. If you are coming from far we appreciate it is hard to time this, but there is a pull-in just to the south of the site (opposite the Harvester) where you can wait, or a small Co-op or large Waitrose further south on the edge of town. Directions Day 1 Old Sarum is signed off the A345, 2 miles north of Salisbury. Meet in the main car park (where there are loos). Address: Castle Road, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP1 3SD. There is a £3 charge for parking (contactless payment available). Please note the site unfortunatley doesn't open until 10am, and they have asked us not to block the track up to the gates before then Google maps - click here what3words: harsh.parading.flattered Day 2 Day 2: Meet in Whitefield Moor car park, Rhinefield Road (on the way out of Brockenhurst, SO42 7QD) where there are loos. Google maps - click here what 3 words – rudder.sandpaper.nooks Adverse weather This is an outdoor run course on an exposed site, and as such we request that participants bring suitable clothing including sunhats, sunblock, and full waterproofs & fleeces. As the climate breaks down, we do occasionally have severe weather where either it is very difficult to take notes due to prolonged heavy rain, or temperatures have reached a point where long exposure can be detrimental to health. In these instances, we will run a condensed version of the course, where we aim to see all the species before lunch but have less time to take notes on them. We will then give attendees free access to the corresponding online course for 24 hours, which means you can take notes and look at the species in more detail in the comfort of your home. We have built a corresponding online catalogue of courses for this purpose, and we therefore feel we can offer the same training experience while looking after attendees' welfare in the field. Therefore if you look at the forecast before the course and start panicking - don’t worry, we’ve got you! Course certificate This course can be used as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). We invite attendees to download their own certificate and complete the numbers of hours spent on the course, as we are aware some attendees spend more time reading up about courses before the day, and writing their notes up and sitting the online course tests afterwards. The hours on your certificate should accurately reflect this time. Feedback from previous courses 'Dom is always a fantastic source of knowledge, and brilliant at teaching it' 'The recap sessions throughout the day really helped us to consolidate what we had been taught, making us a lot more likely to remember the species we were taught.' 'Dominic's fun and useful teaching style. He doesn't get to bogged down with to many technical terms' 'Relaxed nature of presentation with useful ways to remember identification methods. It was useful to have time to do the transects as this helped to practise our ID skills' 'Dom's approach to teaching - relaxed, engaging and knowledgable as ever' 'Mr.Price and his patient and simple approach to field ID.' Develop your flower arranging technique, with Isabel Barnes at the start of summer, and learn a skill to take you through the season. Get to know your florest: I'm a floral designer with a deep love for nature; its colours and quiet beauty. Through The Botanical Barn, I create whimsical, garden-inspired arrangements that celebrate the changing seasons and the joy of flowers. My style blends elegance with a touch of wild, always rooted in thoughtful design and an appreciation for the natural world. Whether I’m styling weddings, curating blooms for local deliveries, or teaching flower arranging workshops, my goal is to bring a sense of joy, wonder, and connection to mother nature. 10am: Brief tour of the Gorhambury Gardens with Head Gardener Gill Hewis and flower arranger Isabel Barnes, giving you the chance to see where the greenery has come from, and select a stem from the gardens to add to your flower arrangement. 10:30am: Refreshments in the Garden Hall and demonstration from Isabel. She will create an arrangement in a vase using similar flowers to those in bloom in the garden and teach you how to create your own, now and for the summer. 10:45am - 12pm: Flower arranging in the Garden Hall. What to bring: Garden gloves, secateurs, wear weather appropriate clothing. Please note: There are a fair number of stone steps and uneven surfaces throughout the estate. Sheffield
Cultural Experiences
This course involves making a patchwork quilt with a finished size of around 78”x52” (200cm x 135cm), which is around the size of a single duvet. On the first day, you will cut out all of your pieces and start to put your initial blocks together. Depending on how quickly you sew, you may not need the whole of the second day to complete your quilt top, but the workshop will be available for those attendees who do need more time to finish. Following the class, you will need to take your quilt away to layer up, ready to quilt and bind. MATERIALS All materials for your quilt top are included in the cost of this class. This includes a full range of fabrics priced at £8.00 per metre. If you would like to use one of our lovely designer fabrics, an additional charge will be payable. Fabric to bind your quilt will also to be provided. Wadding and backing fabric are not included , but will be available to purchase on the day, if required. You will also need to bring a rotary cutter and 24” quilting ruler. If you would like us to source these, please let us know in plenty of time, so we can order them in for you. We do have A0 cutting mats you can use, or you are welcome to bring your own. You are welcome to come into the shop before the class, if you would like to choose your fabrics and make a start on cutting out. Please do let us know if you are planning to do this, so that we can ensure that a cutting guide can be provided for your chosen quilt. Tea, coffee, soft drinks and homemade cake are included. Skill level: Intermediate As for all of our sewing workshops, you must be able to use a sewing machine with a reasonable level of skill. On that basis, you should have either completed an “introduction to sewing machines” session, or have used a sewing machine yourself to undertake simple tasks like joining two pieces of fabric. If you have not done this, this course will not be suitable. Although basic techniques will be used and full tuition will be given, there is quite a lot to get through in this class. You will need to layer up, quilt and bind your quilt after the class, so you will need to have the skills to do this independently. You will also need to feel confident in cutting out accurately using a ruler and rotary cutter, although some support will be given with this. Terms and conditions: Our workshops are open to individuals aged fourteen and upwards. However, a responsible adult must remain on site at all time with minors. Full payment is required at the time of booking to secure your place. Any further details, along with anything you need to bring with you, will be sent out via email in advance of the scheduled date. All workshops will begin promptly at the scheduled time, so please ensure that you arrive early enough to get yourself settled in and have a coffee and cake before the class is due to start. Cancellations: For cancellations with more than two weeks’ notice, a refund will be given, less a 25% administration fee. Cancellations with less two weeks’ notice are non-refundable, unless we are able to fill your place. All workshops will clearly be marked as being suitable for beginners, intermediate or advanced. When booking a workshop, you are responsible for assessing your own abilities. Happy Hare cannot be held responsible if you book the wrong level of workshop or do not read the description of the workshop correctly. A refund will not be given for booking a workshop which you later feel is not at the right level for you, unless the cancellation is made more than two weeks’ prior to the scheduled date. Should we need to cancel a class due to circumstance beyond our control or limited numbers, a full refund will be given. Alternatively, you will be given the option to book onto another workshop. Please note: when making a booking it is assumed that our terms and conditions have been read and approved. Information Source: Happy Hare | eventbrite

25.09.25: Downstream Darkness: Apocalypse Now - 1979 - Franic Ford Coppola The third screening in our Downstream Darkness series, curated by Pete. Apocalypse Now is a 1979 American psychological epic war film produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The screenplay, co-written by Coppola, John Milius, and Michael Herr, is loosely inspired by the 1899 novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, with the setting changed from late 19th-century Congo to the Vietnam War. The film follows a river journey from South Vietnam into Cambodia undertaken by Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), who is on a secret mission to assassinate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a renegade Special Forces officer who is accused of murder and presumed insane and who sees himself as a god. The ensemble cast also features Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest, Albert Hall, Sam Bottoms, Laurence Fishburne, Dennis Hopper, and Harrison Ford. Milius became interested in adapting Heart of Darkness for a Vietnam War setting in the late 1960s, and initially began developing the film with Coppola as producer and George Lucas as director. After Lucas became unavailable, Coppola took over directorial control, and was influenced by Werner Herzog's Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) in his approach to the material. As always, ticket holders are privy to some insane drink deals!
