Amie McNee WE NEED YOUR ART with Bev Wass | Blackwell's Bookshop

Amie McNee WE NEED YOUR ART with Bev Wass | Blackwell's Bookshop

Oxford
Arts Fine Art
We Need Your Art Using her own experiences as a novelist and the inspiration she's shared as a creative coach, Amie guides you on why we need your art and how you can make it happen - starting with a two-week reset plan to help you kick-start your creative habit. This isn't about writing your great novel in a month or painting a masterpiece in a flurry of inspiration. Rather, this process is about practicing small, sustainable creative steps every day over time - five hundred words of writing each day, a pencil sketch every evening - so that you avoid burnout, produce consistent, reliable content on your own terms, and begin to see yourself as an artist. With frank and empowering conversations on the many issues creatives face, including impostor syndrome, perfectionism, procrastination, and the inner critic, as well as invitations to coronate yourself and celebrate your ambition, Amie provides the framework and encouragement you need to begin to take your art seriously. Each chapter also includes journal prompts that help you apply what you have learned to your new life. We Need Your Art is a revolutionary reprogramming of everything we have been taught and told about being a creative, removing the shame and fear we may feel at dubbing ourselves artists and inviting us to create proudly, with celebration. This book is a warm hug, a pep talk, the wise teacher you always wanted, the loving parent you needed, and the fire in your belly that you need to get roaring. Amie McNee Amie McNee is an author, speaker and creative coach. Amie studied medieval history at university, focussing specifically on sex culture, sex work and pornography. Alongside her historical fiction, Amie has written four much loved books all of which discuss the realities and magic of leading a creative life. Amie is known for speaking, teaching and coaching artists all over the world and helping them to achieve their creative dreams. Beverley Wass Bev is a full-time bookseller at Blackwell's Oxford and a creative and inspirational person. Bev has also chaired events with Jennifer Lane on 'The Witches' Survival Guide' and Laura Derbyshire on crafting and creating your own grimoire. Indignity 'There must be hope somewhere, between memory and imagination. Perhaps it takes the form of faith in the redeeming power of art.' When Lea Ypi discovers a photo of her grandmother, Leman, honeymooning in the Alps in 1941 posted by a stranger on social media, she is faced with unsettling questions. Growing up, she was told records of her grandmother's youth were destroyed in the early days of communism in Albania. But there Leman was with her husband, Asllan Ypi: glamorous newlyweds while World War II raged. What follows is a thrilling reimagining of the past, as we are transported to the vanished world of Ottoman aristocracy, the making of modern Greece and Albania, a global financial crisis, the horrors of war and the dawn of communism in the Balkans. While investigating the truth about her family, Ypi grapples with uncertainty. Who is the real Leman Ypi? What made her move to Tirana as a young woman and marry a socialist who sympathized with the Popular Front while his father led a collaborationist government? And why was she smiling in the winter of 1941? By turns epic and intimate, profound and gripping, Indignity explores what it means to survive in an age of extremes. It reveals the fragility of truth, both personal and political, and the cost of decisions made against the tide of history. Through secret police reports of communist spies, court depositions, and Ypi's memories of her grandmother, we move between present and past, archive and imagination, fact and fiction. Ultimately, she asks, what do we really know about the people closest to us? And with what moral authority do we judge the acts of previous generations? Lea Ypi Lea Ypi is Professor in Political Theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science and an Honorary Professor in Philosophy at the Australian National University. A native of Albania, she has degrees in Philosophy and in Literature from the University of Rome La Sapienza, a PhD from the European University Institute and was a Post-Doctoral Prize Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford University. She is the author of Global Justice and Avant-Garde Political Agency, The Meaning of Partisanship (with Jonathan White), The Architectonic of Reason, and Free: Coming of Age at the End of History which has been translated into thirty-five languages. Her academic work has been recognised with the British Academy Prize for Excellence in Political Science and a Leverhulme Prize for Outstanding Research Achievement. She is a fellow of the British Academy, of Academia Europea and of the Albanian Academy of Sciences. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite

We're pleased to host this very special event in collaboration with the Bodleian Libraries “The supreme novelist of his generation” Sunday Times What We Can Know 2014: A great poem is read aloud and never heard again. For generations, people speculate about its message, but no copy has yet been found. 2119: The lowlands of the UK have been submerged by rising seas. Those who survive are haunted by the richness of the world that has been lost. Tom Metcalfe, an academic at the University of the South Downs, part of Britain’s remaining island archipelagos, pores over the archives of that distant era, captivated by the freedoms and possibilities of human life at its zenith. When he stumbles across a clue that may lead to the lost poem, a story is revealed of entangled loves and a crime that destroy his assumptions about people he thought he knew intimately well. What We Can Know is a masterpiece, a fictional tour de force that reclaims the present from our sense of looming catastrophe, and imagines a future world where all is not quite lost. Ian McEwan Ian McEwan is the critically acclaimed author of eighteen novels and two short story collections. His first published work, a collection of short stories, First Love, Last Rites, won the Somerset Maugham Award. His novels include The Child in Time, which won the 1987 Whitbread Novel of the Year Award; The Cement Garden; Enduring Love; Amsterdam, which won the 1998 Booker Prize; Atonement; Saturday; On Chesil Beach; Solar; Sweet Tooth; The Children Act; Nutshell; Machines Like Me; and Lessons. Atonement, Enduring Love, The Children Act and On Chesil Beach have all been adapted for the big screen. Richard Ovenden Richard Ovenden is the Bodley’s Librarian and the Helen Hamlyn Director of the University Libraries. He also serves as Head of Gardens, Libraries and Museums (GLAM) at Oxford. All tickets include a copy of the book. Concession tickets are available with a valid student card. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite

Woodfiring courses in 2025 with Svend Bayer at the University of Oxford. £895, all equipment will be provided. SAVE YOUR PLACE NOW £50 Your Eventbrite booking allows you to book a place. Once you have booked a place we will contact you to arrange a payment link for the balance of your course payment. Courses Run: 23-27 April & 4 May 4-8 & 15 June 24-28 September & 5 October This six-day course offers a unique opportunity to learn from Svend Bayer, a master of wood-firing with decades of experience. Participants will work with our newly constructed single-chamber kiln, built by Svend in 2023, to explore the complexities and nuances of wood-firing. Over the course, you’ll fire your own work alongside pieces from fellow participants, experiencing firsthand the transformative effects of wood ash, flame interaction, and high-temperature firing on ceramic surfaces. The course is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the skills required for long-duration, high-temperature firings. The main session runs for five days, from Wednesday to Sunday, covering essential techniques such as kiln loading, wood preparation, and firing management. After a week of cooling, participants return for the final day on the following Sunday to unload and analyze the results, discuss firing outcomes, and prepare the kiln and wood for future use. Svend will lead the course alongside Dr. Robin Wilson, project director of Oxford University Kilns, with support from experienced assistants. This is an exceptional chance to deepen your expertise and engage with the artistry and unpredictability of wood-firing in a collaborative and educational environment. Wednesday/Thursday – Loading, wood preparation, organising your firing team Friday/Saturday/Sunday – Firing Second Sunday – Unloading and kiln maintenance What to bring: 20 or more small to medium-sized bisque pots in stomneware clay, and any high-firing glazes you wish to test. It is very important that you use clays and glazes appropriate to a cone 12/high stoneware firing. If in doubt, you are always most welcome to ask questions about clays and glazes before the course. In this kind of wood firing, much of the pleasure is gained by the interaction of the clay and ash with the raw surface of the clay body, so glazing is not always preferable or necessary. Documenmt what clays you have used, and what glazes, if any you bring. The position of each pot within the large kiln makes a real difference to the results. Learning to document, understand and control the effects of a large woodfired kiln on the pieces you put in form a large part of this course. Of course, we can’t guarantee to fire all of your pots, but we will fire as many as possible. There is free camping on site, with hot showers and kitchens, or you can arrange your own accommodation locally. There are a large number of local AirB&Bs. Limited accommodation at our fieldstudy centre in the Woods is also available for those booking early in advance. Usually firing teams cook and eat communally on site, which we will arrange nearer the time. For help and advice, contact Dr Robin Wilson of Oxford Kilns. Jacqui Dankworth returns to St Giles' Oxford with her Trio led by Memphis-born pianist Charlie Wood singing songs from her new album 'Windmills' - a dazzling collection of evocative new interpretations from a wide variety of genres: songs from classic films, Broadway show tunes and jazz standards, atmospheric French chanson and Brazilian bossa-nova, and even a beautiful new composition by Dankworth herself. As one of the most highly regarded vocalists in the UK, Jacqui Dankworth is known primarily as a jazz singer, but her broad musical palette also draws on folk, soul, classical, blues, and other influences. Jacqui’s new album Windmills is a vocal tour-de-force of classic songs by Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, Michel Legrand, Sérgio Mendes and others, featuring some of the very best of UK jazz and classical musicians. This is certain to be a wonderful and memorable evening - a dramatic presentation of musical brilliance that is destined to mesmerise loyal fans and newcomers alike. In all her incarnations, she exhibits a subtle control of dynamics and a voluptuous tonal richness that seems to make almost any material sound special. – John Fordham, The Guardian One of our finest singers, regardless of category – Clive Davis, The Sunday TimesFor details of travel to St. Giles' Oxford see our Jazz at St Giles Web page. Sheldonian Theatre, Saturday 14 June 2025, 7:30pmSchumann - Genoveva Overture Bartók - Violin Concerto no.2 Brahms - Symphony no.4 Stefan Simonca-Oprita violin Robert Max conductor In Schumann's only opera, Genoveva, drama ensues after a failed attempt to seduce Genoveva, the wife of Siegfrid. Mirroring the storyline, the overture follows the same dramatic trajectory, with music moving through ominous and wrenching moods, arriving at eventual majesty and triumph. Bartók's second violin concerto was written for Zoltán Székely, his long-standing recital partner. This concerto is infused with styles from Hungarian folk music, and is very much a celebration of life, and is played for us by Stefan Simonca-Oprita. Despite featuring great warmth and lyrical beauty, Brahm's 4th symphony has a definite tragic character. The finale is based on a passacaglia: a sequence variations on a bass pattern. It ends with a bleak but thrilling conclusion, cementing its place as a firm favourite in the classical repertoire. Information Source: Oxford Symphony Orchestra | eventbrite
