Join the UFIFAS Women's Fishing Workshop in Brooksville, Florida, to expand your knowledge of fish and recreational fishing in the state. Specifically designed for women, this two-day workshop offers insights into both saltwater and freshwater fishes and recreational fishing. The event will take place at the UF/IFAS Extension Hernando County, located at 16110 Aviation Loop Drive, Brooksville, FL 34604. On Thursday, November 2, 2023, the workshop will commence with a warm welcome and introductions at 9:00 am. Throughout the day, participants will have the opportunity to learn Fish 101, engage in dissections, master knot tying, enhance fishing skills, explore the art of Gyotaku, and more. Lunch break will be from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm; however, lunch will not be provided. The day will conclude with a dismissal at 3:00 pm. The following day, Friday, November 3, 2023, the workshop will continue at the FWC Bass Conservation Center, located at 3583 Co Rd 788, Webster, FL 33597. The day will start with a tour of the Bass Conservation Center at 9:00 am, followed by an opportunity to fish in the facility's ponds. Please note that this will be freshwater fishing conducted outdoors. The workshop will conclude at 12:30 pm with a dismissal. The Dig It Volleyball May Sand Series is a highly anticipated JUNIORS AAU beach tournament welcoming athletes 18 and Under from various age divisions, including U12 to U18. The final schedule is set to be unveiled on May 17th, with divisions structured according to age groups and skill levels. Each registration covers both team members and requires a valid AAU Card, typically obtained through club participation. Participants can expect dynamic gameplay, with the possibility of girls being reassigned to different age categories to ensure competitive balance. In the case of inclement weather leading to cancellation, refunds or vouchers will be provided. The event promises an exciting lineup of rewards, including medals for the top 3 finishers in all divisions, cash prizes, tee shirts, and giveaways from sponsors, all available at the on-site concessions. The John Holmes Trail Run, set to take place on Saturday, October 5, 2024, in Brooksville, FL, has been rescheduled due to Hurricane Ian. This event, held at the beautiful Croom Trails within the Withlacoochee State Forest's Croom Park, is the Southeast's oldest trail run, boasting a rich 31-year history. Renamed in honor of the founder, John Holmes, this race offers a picturesque course through long leaf pines, scrub oak covered hills, creek bottoms, and cypress ponds, earning recognition from the World Wildlife Fund as one of the 10 Coolest Places in North America. Participants can choose from three distances - 50K, 16 Mile, and 9 Mile - with a limit of 250 runners. To secure a spot, early registration is recommended. The racecourse features multiple water stops and aid stations strategically placed along the loops to keep runners hydrated and supported. Pre-race packet pickup is available the evening before the race from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, as well as on the race day morning. Join us at Lea Rowing Club for our Junior Open Day (Age 13-17) on Saturday 11th January 2025 with sessions starting from 14:00. This exciting event is designed specifically for young (potential) rowing enthusiasts aged between 13 and 17. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, this is the perfect opportunity to get a taste of rowing, have top level coaching and learn some skills you’ll have for life. What to expect: During the Open Day, you'll have a chance to meet and chat with some of our experienced coaches and rowers including ex GB rowers and British Rowing Olympic Pathway Coach. You will learn how to use a rowing machine, how to master the rowing stroke and different drills rowers practice both on and off the water. Once you’ve mastered the stroke, you have the opportunity to put your skills to the test in some power testing and racing. There will be an opportunity for those wanting to challenge themselves to apply for our 12 week FastTrack Course starting February. Participating in rowing has numerous benefits, including improving fitness, building teamwork skills, and fostering a sense of camaraderie; it's a fantastic way to stay active. Our half-term Learn to Row Camp is a great opportunity for young people of different rowing abilities, from beginners to intermediate to learn the basics or refine their already developed skills. This is a week-long course to either learn the basics of rowing to see if rowing is for you or refine the skills you already have. The course will lead you through: the rowing strokehow to row in a crewhow to get a boat on and off the waterhow to use a rowing machinetechnical changes in a boat to improve speedThere will be five water sessions, part of it being gym based to warm up/cool down and consolidate your knowledge of the rowing stroke. This course is for: children 13–17 years oldall levels of fitnessrowers of all levelsAll participants must water confident – we do not anticipate you needing this skill as a life vest is worn during water session however we need to know you can stay safe in the event of a capsize. All sessions will be taught by experienced rowers and coaches. We will be teaching you sculling, meaning using two oars. Please let us know if you have any special requirements.
