Join us to celebrate Denise Williams's Just Our Luck, a new standalone romance full of donuts and fake dating! Denise will be joined in conversation by Andie J. Christopher, author of Unrealistic Expectations (and originator of the Stern Brunch Daddy label). Ticket cost includes a copy of Just Our Luck. ABOUT JUST OUR LUCKA lottery ticket + donuts = love in this steamy new fake dating romance from beloved author Denise Williams. Sybil Sweet has always been lucky, but lately she can't catch a break. After years of bouncing from job to job in search of something that feels right and from man to man in search of something special, Sybil is worried that she's the directionless, floundering daughter her family thinks she is. All she really wants now is a little financial stability and carb comfort. Lucky for her, she's got just enough in the bank to buy a lottery ticket, and the late-night donut store is open. Kiran Anderson put his dreams of becoming a doctor on hold to take over running his family's bakery, and after fighting a losing battle to save the place, he's exhausted, broke, and no closer to getting back to school. But when a whirlwind of a woman sweeps in late one night, flirty energy gives way to more…until she runs out the next morning, leaving behind her winning lottery ticket. Lucky for Kiran, his attempt to return the ticket looks like a grand romantic gesture and goes viral, sending sales through the roof. In an effort to keep the store afloat and to convince Sybil's family she can make good relationship choices, they agree to fake a relationship for three months. Even with hundreds of millions of dollars, finding each other might end up being the sweetest bit of luck for both of them. About the authors: Denise Williams wrote her first book in the 2nd grade. I Hate You and its sequel, I Still Hate You, featured a tough, funny heroine, a quirky hero, witty banter, and a dragon. Minus the dragons, these are still the books she likes to write. After penning those early works, she finished second grade and eventually earned a PhD in education. When she's not writing, reading, and thinking about love stories, she spends her days working in university administration. After growing up a military brat around the world and across the country, Denise now lives in Des Moines, Iowa, with her husband, son, and a dog so quirky, she really needs to end up in a book. USA Today bestselling author Andie J. Christopher writes sharp, witty, sexy contemporary romance about complex people finding happily ever after. Her work has been featured in NPR, Cosmopolitan, The Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, and The New York Post. Prickly heroines are her hallmark, and she is the originator of the Stern Brunch Daddy. Andie lives in the Nation’s Capital with a French bulldog, a stockpile of Campari, and way too many books. More praise for Just Our Luck: Williams always writes likable characters who lust wholeheartedly for each other, and this perfectly sweet and spicy novel is no exception. —New York Times Williams' signature wit, steam and romance make it impossible not to root for Sybil and Kieran to find their happily-ever-after. —People Just Our Luck is everything I love about Denise Williams's books; incredibly smart, fully-realized characters that I'm thrilled to root for, delicious tension, and an abundance of hope. I'm a forever fan. —Tarah DeWitt,USA TodayBestselling Author ofSavor It ————— Can't make it to the event? Personalized copies of Just Our Luck are available to preorder at the link below. Concerts Folk
Music in the Chapel The Music in the Chapel series showcases an eclectic range of performers and local musicians. Immerse yourself in the acoustic and visual charms of Lakewood’s historic Memorial Chapel as we welcome LAAMAR for this special performance. About LAAMAR LAAMAR is the latest project led by Minneapolis-based singer, songwriter, saxophonist, and composer Geoffrey Lamar Wilson. Former frontman of Brooklyn-based Jus Post Bellum , Wilson is also known for his multilayered looped saxophone performances and catchy podcast ditties ( Terrible, Thanks for Asking ). On the band’s debut EP “Flowers,” Wilson blends his idiomatic inspirations bridging folk, soul, R&B, and country with a constant ear toward racial and social justice issues and the shared human experience. “In the EP’s deceptively sweet and warm title track, he relays a memory of his mother ‘lighting candles and putting flowers on the boulevard’ in memory of another dead man of color. In the standout track getting airplay on the Current, “Home to My Baby,” he relays his personal fears of getting pulled over by police,” writes Chris Riemenschneider of the Star Tribune. Recent acclaim for LAAMAR includes debut single “Home to My Baby” being named KAXE’s “Best Song” of 2023 and a nod as one of First Avenue’s Best New Bands. “With Flowers ,” writes Malachy Koons of KAXE, “LAAMAR has crafted a stunning debut that does not shy away from difficult topics. The new EP features four instantly catchy songs, with each taking a different approach to issues of racial and social justice.” The band is working with Nat Harvie (Low, Cole Pulice) on their debut full length, to be released in 2025. The Historic Lakewood Memorial Chapel This event takes place in the beautiful and historic Lakewood Memorial Chapel. This stunning building was built in 1910 by architect Harry Wild Jones and is modeled after the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. It is one of the only examples of Byzantine style chapels in the US, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Click here for more information on the Lakewood Memorial Chapel. Signs will be posted directing you to the event location or click here for GPS navigation through Google Maps . Questions? Call the Lakewood events line at 612-540-5165 or email events@lakewoodcemetery.org. FAQs Is this concert all ages? Yes, all ages are welcome. When should I arrive? Arrive any time after 2 PM before the 3 PM show. Doors open at 2 PM to allow guests ample time to enjoy the art and architecture of Lakewood’s historic Memorial Chapel. Do I have to bring printed tickets or use the Eventbrite app? No, printed tickets are not required and you do not need to use the Eventbrite app. We will have a guest list at the door. What are my transportation and parking options? Free parking is available along roads inside the cemetery, including reserved spaces for handicap parking near the chapel. There is a Metro Transit bus stop just outside of Lakewood’s front gates at 36th & Hennepin Ave. It is within walking distance from the chapel (1-2 blocks). If you come by bicycle, use the bike racks near the cemetery’s main gates. Is the Chapel accessible? Due to the historic nature of this venue, there are limited accessibility accommodations that can be made. Accessibility notices are below: Parking: Reserved accessible parking spots are available near the Chapel’s entrance, which has a ramp to the front door. Seating: All seating is in fixed pews with cushions. Behind the pews, there is space for wheelchairs, but it is limited. Restrooms: Two single-occupancy washrooms are available on the main level. The chapel’s accessible restroom is located on the lower level. Because there is no elevator and the spiral staircase is not accessible for all guests, one can access the lower restroom from behind the building. Please ask staff for assistance with wayfinding. We apologize for these inconveniences. While we strive to be welcoming to all, there are limitations within this historic space. If you have further concerns about accessibility, please call us at 612-540-5165 or email events@lakewoodcemetery.org. What can I bring to the event? There is a coat rack available, and you may bring a water bottle. (There is a water dispenser available inside the building, too.) Please do not bring pets, food or drinks other than water. Arts Literary Arts
Join us as we welcome author Dennis E. Staples to discuss and read from his new novel, Passing Through A Prairie Country. --- ABOUT PASSING THROUGH A PRAIRIE COUNTRY A darkly humorous thriller about the ghosts that haunt the temples of excess we call casinos, and the people caught in their high-stakes, low-odds web. For decades, a dark force has terrorized the Languille Lake reservation. Spoken of only in whispers as “the sandman,” he lurks in the Hidden Atlantis Lake Resort and Casino, the reservation’s main attraction and source of revenue, leeching its patrons’ dreams and preventing the ghosts that linger there from moving on. Fleeing a breakup, Marion Lafournier, a midtwenties Ojibwe, seeks solace in the slot machine’s siren song. Here he falls afoul of the sandman, an encounter he barely escapes through the timely intervention of his cousins Alana and Cherie, who both work at the casino and are intimately aware of the sandman’s power. Meanwhile, Glenn Nielan, recently out of the closet and an aspiring documentarian, hopes to capture the faces of the Ojibwe land while experiencing the casino’s thrills. But he will learn that all who choose to play the sandman’s games are in danger of falling into his grasp. Marion and Alana are members of the Bullhead clan, a family with ties to a sacred past and a fierce determination to ensure their future. Alana, with her sevenfire sight, is the only person to fully understand the danger the sandman poses. Aware of Marion’s occasional ability to navigate the spirit world, she enlists his aid in defeating this wraith. But the power and reach of the sandman go far beyond Alana’s worst fears. Soon she and Marion find themselves in a battle for their lives and for the souls of the reservation’s residents, both the living and the dead. --- “Ojibwe writer Dennis E. Staples’ blend of suspense, comedy and thrills is perfect for fans of Reservation Dogs and Stephen Graham Jones.” — Lizz Schumer,People “Illuminates how a community attempts to cope with ancestral trauma. This is worth a look.” —Publishers Weekly “The sense of timelessness and multiple points of view add to the novel’s chaotic suspense, giving readers the impression they’re trapped in an episode of Twin Peaks. This is a quick and unique read sure to appeal to thriller fans who also enjoy gothic horror.” —Booklist “Taking readers on a journey through the lavish Hidden Atlantis Casino, where no clocks hang on the walls, to the timeless realm of mysterious and death-dealing spirits, Dennis E. Staples delivers an otherworldly story that’s haunting, darkly humorous, and chock full of fascinating Native lore.” —Nick Medina, author of Indian Burial Ground Information Source: Birchbark Books and Native Arts | eventbrite

She will be joined in reading and conversation with podcaster and local writer, Chris Stedman. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Sarah Jones is a senior writer for New York magazine, where she covers politics and religion. She was previously a staff writer for The New Republic and her work has been published by The Nation, the Columbia Journalism Review, and Dissent magazine. Jones won the 2019 Mirror Award for commentary and has been a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She is active on social media (@OneSarahJones). Originally from rural Washington County, Virginia, she now lives in Brooklyn with her husband. Chris Stedman is a writer, podcaster, and professor who teaches in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, MN. He is the author of the books IRL, Faitheist, and the forthcoming Nothing in Particular, as well as the writer and host of Unread, named one of the best podcasts of 2021 by the Guardian, Vulture, HuffPost, Mashable, the CBC, and others, and honored by the 2022 Webby Awards under Podcasts – Best Writing. ABOUT THE BOOK In the tradition of Matthew Desmond’s Evicted and Andrea Elliot’s Invisible Child, Disposable is a poignant exploration of America’s underclass, left vulnerable by systemic racism and capitalism. Here, Sarah Jones delves into the lives of the essential workers, seniors, and people with disabilities who were disproportionately affected by COVID-19—not due to their age or profession, but because of the systemic inequality and poverty that left them exposed. The pandemic served as a stark revelation of the true state of America, a country where the dream of prosperity is a distant mirage for millions. Jones argues that the pandemic didn’t create these dynamics, but rather revealed the existing social mobility issues and wealth gap that have long plagued the nation. Behind the staggering death toll are stories of lives lost, injustices suffered, and institutions that failed to protect their people. Jones brings these stories to the forefront, transforming the abstract concept of the pandemic into a deeply personal and political phenomenon. She argues that America has abandoned a sacrificial underclass of millions but insists that another future is possible. By addressing the pervasive issues of racial justice and public policy, Jones calls for a future where no one is seen as disposable again. Information Source: Milkweed Books | eventbrite
