Sashiko Visible Mending Workshop | Colour Me Local Dye Garden

Sashiko Visible Mending Workshop | Colour Me Local Dye Garden

May 17, 2025 (UTC-7) ENDED
Vancouver
Cultural Experiences
Sliding-scale tickets are available. Join us for a creative and relaxing morning at the Colour-Me-Local Natural Dye Garden, where nature and art come together. This visible mending workshop will introduce you to sashiko techniques and style while you enjoy the beauty of the garden’s colours, bird song and natural surroundings. Please bring a garment to work on, and scrap fabric if you wish. The workshop fee includes needle, thread and some scrap fabric. Local artist Yoko Tomita will facilitate this workshop. A message from Yoko: "Mending has been part of my life for a long time. I have been fixing my clothing for about 35 years. It’s good to refresh old sweaters, pants, skirts, winter hats and more to make them your style. I like to wear comfortable, well-fitting clothes, so I often customize a garment's fit and add personal touches through stitching. "It’s good to know the basics of how Sashiko developed to prolong the life of Kimono fabric in Japan. I remember my grandmother and my mother used to make kimonos, and they fixed things all the time. I value good-quality textiles such as linen and silk, which can last a lifetime with good care. My mending started from the love of textiles and upcycling clothing to reduce waste." Summary Where : Colour-Me-Local Dye Garden (west side of Renfrew Ravine Park, 3958 Renfrew Street #3998 Vancouver, BC) Price : $50 per person (all materials included, no tax). Sliding-scale tickets are available on request by emailing info@stillmoonarts.ca. Limited Capacity : 10 people only Ages 16+, all ages if accompanied by an adult. What to Bring Bring a garment to work on, and fabric scraps if you'd like. Bring a water bottle, sunblock and snacks if you’d like. Dress for the weather: This event will take place outdoors. For your comfort, please wear weather-appropriate clothing. Sliding-Scale Tickets As a non-profit organization, Still Moon Arts collects fees for some of our workshops to help cover the costs associated with running our programs. However, we don’t want to exclude people due to unaffordability, so we offer sliding-scale tickets for participants who are unable to absorb the full cost of this workshop. Please contact info@stillmoonarts.ca to request a sliding-scale ticket. Accessibility The Colour Me Local Dye Garden is an unpaved grass garden located in the northwest corner of Renfrew Ravine Park. The Rickshaw presents Blitzen Trapperwith guest, Clay OrangeMay 29th, 2025The Rickshaw Theatre19+Doors: 7:00pmBlitzen TrapperBlitzen Trapper's new album - 100's of 1000's, Millions of Billions - offers a captivating take on rebirth and transcendence, and the circularity of existence, navigating its way through the space beyond dreams and reality, beyond gods and mortals, beyond life and death. The songs here are as sincere as they are surreal, rooted in rich character studies and deep reflection, and unfolding like a riddle-filled journey that asks many questions and offers no answers. The production is intoxicating to match, blending lo-fi intimacy and trippy psychedelia into a mesmerizing swirl of analog and electronic sounds. Add it all together and the result is a gorgeous, sprawling collection wrapped in lush layers of synthesizers and washed out electric guitars–a poignant, expansive exploration of perception and purpose that manages to look both forwards and backwards all at once. Launched roughly two decades ago in Portland, OR, Blitzen Trapper garnered early attention with a series of self-released albums before breaking out internationally with a pair of critically acclaimed LPs (2007’s Wild Mountain Nation and 2008’s Furr) that would cement their status at the forefront of the modern indie folk revival. Rolling Stone hailed the band’s “hazy, psychedelic Americana,” while NPR praised their “explosive live performances and infectious roots-rock swagger,” and The New York Times compared their songs to Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young. www.blitzentrapper.net Clay OrangeClay Orange is the moniker of Vancouver-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ross Macnab, whose quiet evolution from local psych-rock collaborator to introspective solo artist marks a significant shift in tone and texture. After several formative years with the band Tanglers, Macnab’s work as Clay Orange feels like the start of a more personal conversation — one rooted less in the collective pulse of a jam and more in the subtle details of reflection, memory, melody and rhythm. Clay Orange’s sound threads together strands of indie folk, soul, and alt-rock with a gentle hand, often performed in rotating lineups that serve the songs more than any fixed identity. Lyrically, Macnab gravitates toward themes of everyday introspection — reflecting on memory, uncertainty, the natural world, and the quiet shifts in our inner lives, delivered with restraint rather than spectacle. His debut full-length, Deeply, arrived in 2024, a self-released collection that earned attention for its warmth and honesty. A follow-up is currently in the works, with a tentative release planned for later this year. clayorange.bandcamp.com RSVP on FacebookRefund PolicyNo refunds, unless event is cancelled. Did you know that all of lambic comes from a 40 kilometre square area? Or that cider was once used as currency? Despite their cultural significance, changing trends and socio-economic shifts across the 20th Century have wreaked havoc on some of Beer and Ciders most revered styles. Together we shall dive into the heart of the wild and (nearly) forgotten! We shall sip on a curated selection of artisanal Farmhouse craft featuring lambic's old masters and some of Canada's best brewers, blenders and cidermakers. Just as Winter turns to Spring, we shall rejoice in its modern resurgence! Our shop tastings start at 7pm and run for approximately one to one and a half hours. We will match 6 beers/ciders on a theme, accompanied by some light nibbles chosen to pair . Due to the communal nature of the tasting, we are unable to cater for dietary requirements. Tickets are fully refundable up to 7 days prior to the event. Information Source: JAK's Beer Wine Spirits | eventbrite

Jewish Renewal is not a denomination but a dynamic approach to Jewish life that seeks to revitalize tradition with deep spirituality, inclusivity, and engagement with contemporary wisdom. In this series, we will explore Reb Zalman’s groundbreaking ideas, tracing their roots in Hasidic thought, Kabbalah, and interfaith dialogue while considering how they continue to shape Jewish practice today. Each session will offer a blend of learning, discussion, and experiential practices that invite us to engage with Jewish tradition in a renewed and meaningful way. Session 1: Renewing the Spirit – The Foundations of Jewish Renewal Discover the core principles of Jewish Renewal and Reb Zalman’s vision for a spiritually vibrant Judaism. We’ll explore concepts such as paradigm shifts, deep ecumenism, and the role of personal experience in shaping Jewish practice. Session 2: Prayer, Music, and Mysticism – Expanding Our Connection to the Divine Reb Zalman was deeply influenced by Hasidic joy, contemplative prayer, and musical expression. This session will examine his approach to tefillah (prayer), meditation, and song as pathways to deepening our spiritual lives. Session 3: Eco-Kashrut and Holistic Judaism – Ethics for a Changing World How do we bring Jewish values into modern challenges? We’ll explore Reb Zalman’s concept of eco-kashrut, sustainability, and the ways Jewish Renewal calls us to a holistic, ethical approach to living in harmony with the world. Session 4: Paradigm Shifts and the Future of Judaism Reb Zalman taught that Judaism must evolve while staying rooted in its sacred traditions. We’ll discuss his ideas about leadership, interfaith relationships, and the future of Jewish spirituality in an ever-changing world. Each session will include interactive discussions, text study, and experiential practices.
