Part of a series of late-night gatherings at the historic God's House Tower, GHT Lates offers a chance to explore the building by night while being enthralled by live performances from top musicians in the South. This month's lineup features March, Nick Hilder, and Winterfalle as they embark on their Spring Tide Mini Tour, introducing a fresh wave of alternative folk artists from the South West and Channel Islands. March, led by singer-songwriter Kitty O'Neal, delivers a captivating blend of contemporary folk and indie music, having graced stages at prestigious events like Glastonbury. Nick Hilder's heartfelt lyrics and melodious tunes have earned him acclaim on BBC Introducing Channel Islands, while Winterfalle, led by Sam Falle, shares modern folk tales through life-affirming songs. Additionally, enjoy delectable offerings from The South Coast Bagel Co. Explore the exhibition, tower, roof, and relax in the cozy cafe and courtyard. From lesser known independant productions to blockbuster films, our selection covers all tastes so you know you'll find something you love to watch. Join us in the Crawford Room where we'll be showing classic and much loved films OR stay downstairs in the Bar to find something a little lesser known and little more challenging. This month we're celebrating Christmas, but not Christmas films. Instead, just films which happen to take place around Christmas... You can cast your vote to decide what is shown in each room by filling in the poll -HERE The voting will close a week before the event so don't forget to check back! You’ll find out what film you’ll be watching when you arrive and we’ll be asking viewers to rate the film as well as to contribute to a blind vote for next months viewing. What to expect on the night The doors to GHT will open at 6.30pm and the bar will be open for you to buy drinks and snacks. As (hopefully) you know, there have been 2 films to vote for and we’ll be showing the most popular from each; one in the cafe, one in the Crawford Room. In the Crawford Room you can expect a lesser known art house productions, and in the cafe some absolute classics. So when you arrive pick your vibe and make yourself at home! As ever you’ll find out what films have won the vote when you arrive! Access Please note that unfortunately the Crawford Room does not have step free access. The cafe is totally step free from Town Quay Road. The cafe extension will be used as a quiet space throughout the evening, with dimmed lighting and quiet music. Please use this space if for any reason you need to take a break. What to bring Wrap up warm as GHT can get a little cold at night. There will be plenty of chairs, beanbags and other seating available. Tickets We have very few tickets left so if you can no longer attend we’d really appreciate it if you could release your ticket so that we know how many people to expect. Please have your ticket ready when you arrive on the night for a member of the team to check at the front door. Led by Susmita Bhattacharya, the GHT Creative Writing Group offers a series of free writing workshops using our contemporary art programme as the stimulus for creativity. For this workshop, Susmita will be exploring different forms of flash fiction. Beginners welcome! The GHT Creative Writing Group returns for Jocelyn McGregor's new commission No Notion of Loving by Halves. ____________________________________ About the facilitator: Susmita Bhattacharya is an Indian-born writer whose debut novel, The Normal State of Mind (Parthian) was long-listed at the Mumbai Film Festival, 2018. Her short story collection, Table Manners (Dahlia Publishing) won the Saboteur Award for Best Short Story Collection and was serialised on BBC Radio 4 Extra. She mentors underrepresented writers through the Middle Way Mentoring Scheme and is co-founder of the Write Beyond Borders Mentoring Project and the ACE funded ‘Bridges not Borders’ project. Wednesday 12 February, 7:15pm - 8:45pm And There It Was… For The Curious… is a fabulously fun, engaging and welcoming writing group that meets on the second Wednesday of the month. At this inclusive and invigorating session writers and scribblers of all abilities are invited to use a range of prompts and techniques to create new poems, prose, monologues and much more. A friendly place to meet other pen wielders and hone your trade in a celebration of language filled with creativity and humour, kindness and laughter. From stories told to a hip-hop beat to the Ballad of the Plumlord, you never know how inspiration is going to hit, so grab your pens, come in and join us! For this special edition, we will absorb the history and mystery of Jane Austen’s travelling writing desk to see where it takes us! This could mean anything from writing love letters to Southampton to haikus about mystery ship tunes to short burst associative words or raps and ballads about cobbled streets and bollards. Join skate coach Ida Kubisz, founder of Get Up Skate School, as she helps you level up your mini ramp skills. Want to give rock fakies a try? Rock and rolls? We got you! The 2 ft mini ramp has a mellow transition and flat bar coping, so it’s a great place to try new tricks! Ida will be providing you with tips, tricks and helping hands all in a supportive, small group environment, and our hope is that you leave the lesson with some new skills. The lesson will take place on the mini ramp in the main gallery space at Gods House Tower, the ramp is part of the We Skate Soton exhibition, We Skate, we vibe. The gallery will be open to the public during the lesson so there may be visitors to the gallery walking around during the lessons. Skaters must wear a helmet during the lesson. 4 spaces available. Ages 8 and up. This lesson is not suitable for complete beginners and you must provide your own skateboard and protective equipment. Best suited to skaters who can drop in already, or have some experience of dropping in. About Ida Ida, skate coach and founder of Get Up Skate School, got back into skating just over 2 years ago, when she braved attending a We Skate Soton meet up solo. And from there it’s completely taken over her life. She loves transition and bowl skating, as well as cruising around and pump tracks. Emily will help you crack essential ramp skills like pumping and kickturns, in a small, supportive group environment. The lesson will take place on the mini ramp in the main gallery space at Gods House Tower, the ramp is part of the We Skate Soton exhibition, We Skate, we vibe. The gallery will be open to the public during the lesson so there may be visitors to the gallery walking around during the lessons. The mini ramp has a mellow transition and flat bar coping. Join us for a comedy night brought to you by the team behind Something Comedy. Four of the UK's most exciting up-and-coming comedians will be bringing laughs to the gatehouse for a night to remember. Featuring performances from: Alexis Coward: Alexis’s comedy is based on her awkward stumbles through adult life. Alexis has performed across the UK, Australia and once in a pub in Canada. Alexis’s disarming story telling style is “adequate” according to her family. And “quite funny…not Gervais” man in a blue polo shirt, Reading UK. Kathryn Vine: Kathryn Vine is a rising stand-up comedian from Southampton. She has made a name for herself on the local comedy circuit with performances that explore her experiences as a new mum approaching middle age. Her comedic style often includes relatable humour about family life and personal anecdotes. Kathryn has been a finalist in many local competitions and was awarded the Dorset Comedian of the Year in 2024. As well as our host Andrew White: Andrew White has been described by Joe Lycett as “very exciting and very funny” and by teachers as “a pleasure to teach” (gay). He performs year-round on all of the country’s top comedy stages, from famous clubs to packed out festival tents, and even an annual metal detecting rally! Away from his live work, he has written for TV shows like Mock The Week and amassed an online following with over 1m likes and 8m views on platforms like TikTok.
