We are pleased to welcome author Sarah James to our Squirrel Hill store to speak on her new book, Last Stop Union Station, with Shannon Reed. Following the talk, we will have a time for Q&A with the audience and book signing. We hope to see you there! Want to pre-order a copy of the book? You can do so here. About the book: When a struggling (ahem, aging) Hollywood starlet is forced to join the Victory caravan to save her continued stardom, she becomes entwined in a potential murder tied to a group of homegrown Nazis, and she soon must choose to save her country or her career. Hollywood, 1942. Jacqueline Love's once-successful acting career is flailing. Not only is she now on the wrong side of 40, but she's been dubbed as difficult to work with, and the once plentiful roles reserved for her in blockbuster films have dwindled to a complete halt. But with the country at war, the American people want nothing more than to escape to the silver screen, and Jacqueline's agent suggest the one thing she thinks can get her career back on track: joining the Hollywood Victory Caravan, a train full of movie stars volunteering to fundraise for the troops. When a loutish actor dies on board just outside of Chicago, everyone assumes he drank himself to death. But Jackie is convinced that there's more to the death. Stuck in Chicago until the case is cleared, Jackie enlists the help of Grace, one of the few women in the Chicago police force, who's desperate to get herself off of desk duty with a high-profile case. As they team up to solve the potential murder, the two end up finding that the victim had ties to a homegrown group of Nazi sympathizers – and soon Jackie must ask herself what’s more important: her career, or her country? About the author: SARAH JAMES is a graduate of the MFA Writing for Screen & Television program at USC and the BA Playwriting program at Fordham Lincoln Center. She currently works as a freelance writer. She is the author of The Woman With Two Shadows and Last Night at the Hollywood Canteen. About the conversation partner: Shannon Reed is the author of the best-selling Why We Read: On Bookworms, Libraries and Just One More Page Before Lights Out, as well as the Thurber Prize semi-finalist Why Did I Get a B? And Other Mysteries We're Discussing in the Faculty Lounge. She's the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the creative writing program at the University of Pittsburgh, where she teaches fiction and humor-writing as a Teaching Professor, as well. Shannon grew up in Johnstown and is a proud, if increasingly desperate, Pirates fan. Information Source: Riverstone Books | eventbrite

Hey, Pittsburgh! When was the last time you did something completely spontaneous? Our series groups together complete strangers for a fun day out. That's right, you sign up, and we book the restaurant. We know life can get busy. Don't forget to spend time making new friends! Don't do city life alone and build your community with us. This project is to host dinners in 100 major cities to combat loneliness while supporting locally owned businesses. We are dedicating 25% of sales towards charity or GoFundMe pages at the end of each month. How does it work? -After you register, you'll be emailed an introduction message including a quick questionnaire regarding age, dietary restrictions, hobbies, and interests that we use to select restaurants for the night's group. -At the end of the month, we'll share sales reports with attendees and detail how we are utilizing 25% of sales towards social good. *Your registration does not include your individual food and drink purchases. *These outings are intended to help people make friends . These are not singles gatherings . Our vision is simple: we take the no gimmicks approach to networking. No need for yet another app to take up space on your phone - just four walls and a roof and good food for people to connect :) We coordinate with you directly, human-to-human. If you have any more questions, please contact ermantourageimpact@gmail.com ! Brought to you by event series Ermantourage .
