BASE NOTES: Adelle Stripe in conversation | Blackwell's Bookshop

BASE NOTES: Adelle Stripe in conversation | Blackwell's Bookshop

Apr 1, 2025 (UTC+0) ENDED
Oxford
Arts Literary Arts
We're so excited to welcome Adelle Stripe to Blackwell's in partnership with the University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing to hear her discuss her wonderful new book, BASE NOTES: The Scents of a Life. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: A bedroom dreamer with a headful of Warhol, Adelle Stripe's formative years were ones of daytime drinking and religious fervour, frustrated mothers and reckless daughters, desire, ambition and the pursuit of creativity. Told through a prism of vintage perfumes, and played out in vivid detail with startling clarity and colour, Base Notes chronicles an unbridled Northern England of the late 20th century already fading from view. With a keen eye for the absurd, an ear cocked to eavesdropped conversations and a nose that finds perfume wherever it goes, this tragicomic tale of working-class womanhood is no clichéd story of redemption or escape, but instead a bleakly funny yet unflinching memoir of dead-end jobs, lost weekends, brief encounters and those wild, forgotten characters who slip through the cracks. Infused with acerbic observations and unexpected poignancy, Base Notes sees Adelle Stripe boldly laying her lived experience on the page, creating literature from a life less ordinary. About the author: Born in 1976, Adelle Stripe grew up in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire and worked a variety of dead-end jobs until enrolling at university as a creative writing student at the age of 30. Originally a poet, she published her first three collections as chapbooks, and wrote short stories for small press journals and literary magazines. Her debut novel, Black Teeth and a Brilliant Smile, was based on the life and work of Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar. First published by Wrecking Ball Press, it was later acquired by Fleet (Little, Brown). Black Teeth was shortlisted for the Gordon Burn Prize and Portico Prize for Literature. In 2022, her account of the controversial Irish/Algerian punk band, Fat White Family, was published by White Rabbit. Ten Thousand Apologies tells the band’s story in an innovative novelistic method. It was a Sunday Times bestseller, and a Rough Trade book of the year. The biography was shortlisted for the prestigious Penderyn Music Book Prize. Adelle Stripe holds a PhD by Research in creative writing and is a Burgess Fellow at the University of Manchester. As a journalist, she has written for The Quietus, Yorkshire Post, New Statesman and many more. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of a book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. We are thrilled to welcome Rozie Kelly to the shop for the launch of her debut novel KINGFISHER. Rozie will be in conversation with Adam Farrer, author of COLD FISH SOUP and BROKEN BISCUITS. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: When a creative writing academic becomes infatuated with his colleague - the poet - it is not long before it begins to threaten his relationship with his partner, Michael. Michael is beautiful. Michael is safe. But the poet is everything he isn't; she has everything he wants. While he writes about steel and sex, she dreams about the movements of swallows. While he tends to his budding career, she writes from her big, white house in the woods. As he slips between his old life and this new one, his fixation grows into something more powerful. The poet, his Kingfisher, is his sole focus. He is hypnotised. But when simultaneous illnesses threaten to destroy the precarious reality he clings to, he's forced to question what he can and cannot take from someone. This is a novel about grief, power and desire - and the tangles in between that make up a life. About the author: Rozie Kelly is a prose writer based in West Yorkshire. After reading English Literature and Creative Writing she moved to Hebden Bridge, where she works for the Arvon Foundation, hosting creative writing courses. She was shortlisted for the PFD Queer Fiction Prize 2023 and is one of the eight participants in the inaugural Prototype Development Programme, which offers extended support and career development to emerging writers and artists. She won the 2024 NorthBound Book Award for Kingfisher, her debut novel. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book. Oxford
Arts Literary Arts
Welcome to the event, 'A Queer Glow from the Book Lantern'! Join us at the Taylor Institution Library for a very special evening with Selby Wynn Schwartz, author of After Sappho. In one of her earliest journals, the young Virginia Woolf wrote of “the lantern bearer... who lights the paths fitfully.” Casting light through writing is a queer, fitful re-illumination: the past is more radiant; perhaps some pages even shine into the future. This talk honors a set of contemporary projects of queer literary lantern-bearing, spotlighting some shapes that queer kinships might trace among writers and readers now. It takes inspiration from the lantern kept on the tomb of Natalie Barney by Suzette Robichon and Suzanne Stroh—an otherwise ordinary garden lantern, but one which holds an evolving set of books that burnish a lesbian lineage. This book lantern suggests that queer kinship could look like an ever-changing library, or a prismatic translation practice, or a curation of objects reflecting across time. In the spirit of that book lantern, the talk will illuminate a few current literary, artistic, and activist projects that themselves shine light on non-lineal, non-linear, luminously queer conjoinings of texts. Followed by a Q&A and a drinks reception. This event is organised by the Queer Kinship Network. Information Source: The Queer Kinship Network | eventbrite

Poetry pamphlet launch: Heronless, Sophia Argyris. With guest readers Alan Buckley and Benedicta Norell, plus music from i4M2. Date: 8th April 2025 Time: Arrive from 7pm for a 7.30pm start Location: The Cafe at the Old Fire Station, George Street, Oxford. Please join us for an evening of poetry and community, to celebrate the launch of Sophia Argyris' new pamphlet, Heronless, published by Palewell Press. How to grieve for a dying world whilst still finding joy in its beauty? How to come to terms with the loss of a parent? These are some of the questions raised by Sophia's poems. 'Each of the poet’s experiences is bound to the natural world. Nature is integral, is the lens through which the poet attempts to name or process the overwhelming, inescapable massiveness of grief. These poems are neat, often gorgeously distilled acts of devotion. Argyris’ ghosts are forever bound with the birds, the trees, stars, stones and water. How do we bear these sadnesses that enter our hearts and never leave? Perhaps there is no answer to this question. At least there is poetry like this – these poems will remain, gentle as breath around you for a long time.' Jane Burn Sophia Argyris is of British-Greek origin, grew up in Belgium and Scotland. Her work has appeared in Magma, Poetry London, Poetry Wales, and Under the Radar, and has been placed in the Verve and Welshpool competitions, and shortlisted for the Live Canon International Poetry Competition. She also teaches yoga in and around Oxford. Alan Buckley is the author of two pamphlets, and the full collection Touched (HappenStance 2020); his second collection Still is forthcoming from Blue Diode Press in 2025. His poems have been highly commended in the Forward and Bridport prizes. Alongside writing, editing and tutoring he also works as a psychotherapist. Benedicta Norell is the author of Terrible Mother, published by Black Cat Poetry Press in 2024. Her poems have appeared in various literary magazines including Dust Poetry, Atrium Poetry and Blue Press. She is currently working on a collection about menopause and midlife. Benedicta writes with truth and beauty.” - Kit de Waal Information Source: Sophia Argyris | eventbrite

Wild Fictions Wild Fictions brings together Amitav Ghosh's extraordinary writing on the subjects that have obsessed him over the last twenty-five years: literature and language; climate change and the environment; human lives, travel, and discoveries. The spaces that we inhabit, and the way in which we occupy them, is a constant thread throughout this striking and expansive collection. From the significance of the commodification of the clove, the diversity of the mangrove forests in West Bengal and the radical fluidity of multilingualism, Wild Fictions is a powerful refutation of imperial violence, a fascinating exploration of the fictions we weave to absorb history, and a reminder of the importance of empathy. With the combination of moral passion, intellectual curiosity and literary elegance that defines his writing, Amitav Ghosh makes us understand the world in new, and urgent, ways. Together, the pieces within Wild Fictions chart a course that allows us to heal our relationships and restore a delicate balance with the volatile landscapes to which we all belong. Amitav Ghosh Amitav Ghosh is an Indian writer. He won the 54th Jnanpith award in 2018, India's highest literary honour. Ghosh's ambitious novels use complex narrative strategies to probe the nature of national and personal identity, particularly of the people of India and South Asia. He studied in Delhi, Oxford and Alexandria and is the author of The Circle of Reason, The Shadow Lines, In An Antique Land, Dancing in Cambodia, The Calcutta Chromosome, The Glass Palace, The Hungry Tide, and The Ibis Trilogy, consisting of Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke and Flood of Fire. His most recent book, The Great Derangement; Climate Change and the Unthinkable, a work of non-fiction, appeared in 2016. Amitav Ghosh holds four Lifetime Achievement awards and six honorary doctorates. In 2007 he was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest honors, by the President of India. In 2010 he was a joint winner, along with Margaret Atwood of a Dan David prize, and 2011 he was awarded the Grand Prix of the Blue Metropolis festival in Montreal. In 2018 the Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary honor, was conferred on Amitav Ghosh. He was the first English-language writer to receive the award. In 2019 Foreign Policy magazine named him one of the most important global thinkers of the preceding decade. In 2024 Amitav Ghosh was awarded the Erasmus Prize and was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Santanu Das Professor Santanu Das works on early twentieth-century literature and culture, and is especially interested in the relationship between experience, writing and emotion in times of conflict. His first book examined the role of the senses, particularly touch, in First World War experience and literature, while his recent work has focussed on the colonial dimensions of war culture and memory through an expanded notion of the 'archive' - artefacts, photographs, paintings, rumours, folksongs and sound-recordings, as well as testimonial, political and literary writings. Having just completed a monograph on India and First World War culture, He is about to begin work on two projects: the Oxford Book of Colonial Writings of the First World War and a monograph on the experience and imaginings of sea-voyages in a global context, from Victorian times to now. Bowieland Following open heart surgery, poet and writer Peter Carpenter was given one instruction - 'Walk, if you want to stay on this planet'. And so when his hero and inspiration David Bowie died in 2016, he knew what he had to do. The man who was to so many a companion and guide had left no shrine, no focal point of understanding. To reconnect with Bowie, he would take a walk into the past, to the streets, towns and places where David Jones became something more. Walking to recover, to stay alive, Peter realised he was also recovering his lost hero. Leaving behind Heddon Street and Brixton, well-known Bowie shrines, he moved out through South London edgelands and suburbia to remoter Bowie haunts: Croydon, Aylesbury, Pett Level, Southend-on-Sea. Finding the windows Bowie had stared out from in Clareville Grove; the streets in Beckenham where he'd scurried by. He sifted through debris on a patch of waste ground in Tunbridge Wells where Bowie's parents first met. He turned the handle and entered Shirley Parish Hall to find the same stage where a young Davy Jones and the Kon-Rads set up to play back in 1962; and travelled to Berlin, to emerge from the S-Bahn to gape at the ruined portico of the Anhalter Bahnhof and asked 'What is this?' In Bowieland, Carpenter's peripatetic trampings seem to echo Bowie's own wandering creative spirit, the walks often uncovering hidden layers, and making fresh connections to key Bowie stories, revealing influences conscious and subconscious. Through walking, an understanding is reached of where Bowie sits in the culture, his place among the poets, painters, artists and musicians who came before him, who inhabited the same spaces and in doing so passed on their wisdom to Bowie. Peter Carpenter Peter Carpenter’s poetry has been widely anthologised and praised and his chapter on creative writing appears in The OUP Handbook of British and Irish Poetry. He has written essays and articles on a wide variety of subjects, from the photography of Boris Mikhailov to the poetry of T. S. Eliot, in journals such as London Magazine and PN Review. He contributed a chapter about rock star Gary Holton in London: City of Disappearances; and in Iain Sinclair’s circuit around the M25, London Orbital, Peter appears as a character and guide. Born in Epsom, Peter now lives near Oxford with his wife, Amanda, a sustainability activist, who runs the acclaimed Planet Pod . They also co-direct cult independent micropress, Worple. Peter walks for life and still supports his local team. *A Book and Ticket option is also available for this event which includes a hardback copy of the book and entry to the event. The cost is the RRP of the book. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite

FAST-FIRE KILN FIRING COURSE April 17, 18, 19 Our Fastfire Kilns Course offers the perfect introduction to wood-firing ceramics, giving you hands-on experience with wood management and the process of loading and firing wood kilns here at Oxford. We encourage you to bring bisque-fired stoneware pots to test your glaze recipes and see the unique effects wood-firing can create on your own work. Throughout the course, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to deepen your understanding of wood-firing techniques, gain insights from our experienced tutors, and share knowledge with fellow participants. These courses are also a great way to get to know our facilities and connect with the wider wood-firing community. Our site is home to a variety of wood-fired kilns, which we use for both firing courses and private hire by experienced firing teams. If you’re interested in building your own kiln, we also run specialized kiln-building courses. For accommodation, we offer free on-site camping with access to hot showers and a field kitchen. If camping isn’t your preference, you’ll find plenty of nearby Airbnbs to choose from. For those booking early, we also have limited accommodation available at our field study centre in the woods. Communal cooking and dining are a cherished part of the firing experience, and we’ll organize these closer to the course date to ensure everyone feels part of the community. We run these courses throughout the year. Our first 3 dates for 2025 are 17-19 April, 2-4 May and 13-15 June. Please ask if you have any further questions.
