3 day Wood Firing Experience in the heart of Mid Wales. Our Girel 3e kiln was built in 2024, an ergonomic, economic and environmentally friendly kiln designed by Jean Girel in 2022. It uses less wood than comparable kilns and fires in much less time giving the opportunity for the experience of wood firing without a large time commitment. The kiln is designed to be energy efficient, both in terms of the wood used and the effort of stoking. Those coming on the course will be able to participate in the full firing experience. Firing weekend courses will be Friday to Sunday. June 20,21,22 Sept 26,27,28 Programme - Friday . Glazing and packing the kin 10.00 – 19.00 Saturday . Kiln firing from 6.00 a.m, finishing around 19.00 Sunday . Morning free to explore the area, afternoon will be unpacking the kiln £300 per person. Maximum 8 people Café on site. You can bring 12 or so small to medium-sized bisque or raw stoneware pots or come on our intensive throwing course the previous weekend. It is very important that you use appropriate clay to minimise adverse effects on other pots and kiln shelves. We provide a range of glazes that have been used successfully in this kiln. In wood firing, much of the pleasure is gained by the action of the flame on the unglazed surface of the clay body, so glazing is not always preferable. We can’t guarantee to fire all of your pots, but we will fire as many as possible. Optional 2 day throwing workshops , max 5 students Saturday and Sunday before the firing June 14,15 September 20,21 Work to be made for firing the following weekend may be bisque fired or kept raw. Arts Design
Discover the future of performing arts center design at the highly anticipated event, Exploding the Box: The Future of Performing Arts Centre Design. This groundbreaking symposium, taking place on February 18, 2024, at the prestigious Geelong Arts Centre in Geelong, VIC, Australia, will bring together leading arts and cultural curators to explore contemporary trends in theatre and performance art. The event aims to address the lack of responsiveness in arts center design to audience diversity, cultural difference, and performance multiplicity, which has resulted in declining audience numbers. Could the inflexibility of performance spaces and the drabness of dark, black spaces be to blame? Do these venues turn their backs on the communities they serve? These pressing questions will be discussed and dissected by a distinguished panel of experts. The panelists include Professor Hilary Glow, an accomplished author and researcher in arts and cultural management, who focuses on arts audiences and diversification. Sam Strong, a renowned theatre director and advocate of new Australian works, will also lend his expertise. Joseph O'Farrell, a multi-art performer, producer, and curator, will share his insights on creating inclusive and engaging experiences for diverse communities. Moderating the discussion will be Ian McDougall, a highly acclaimed architect and recipient of the RAIA Gold Medal. The Stephen Ashton Address, an annual public lecture honoring the late Stephen Ashton, is made possible by the generous support of ARM Architecture and Dr. Rosemary Nixon AM. In 2024, this prestigious event is presented in partnership with Open House Melbourne. Don't miss this one-of-a-kind opportunity to gain valuable insights into the future of performing arts center design. Admission is free, so mark your calendars and prepare to be enlightened.
