Monday 9th June 2025 | 6pm Dr Mark Ireland, Senior Lecturer in Energy Geoscience and Associate Dean Global Partnerships, Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering, Newcastle University Inspired by Recent Investigations in Geology (3 lectures by Prof Ansted, 1867-1868 Lecture Season) David Thomas Ansted F.R.S. (5 February 1814 – 13 May 1880) was an English professor of geology and author of numerous books on geology. Talk 2: Why 300-million-year-old rocks continue to be important in the 21st Century The Palaeozoic rocks of Northern England, and in particular the sedimentary successions that are deposited within the sedimentary basins, have long been studied by geologists. The Late Palaeozoic Era, a time in Earth’s history between 420 to 251 million years ago, includes the prominent formations, recognizable along the Tyneside coast, of the Westphalian (Carboniferous) Coal Measures and the Permian Zechstein Evaporites. The significance of each formation has been described and interpreted across Northern England and continues to provide insights into the geological history of the British Isles. Notably, each of these formations has, since the 19th century, been noted for their economic significance, and in this talk, we will explore how these formations may continue to be important in our ever-changing world. With up-to-date guidance and expert instruction, Planning with Love will empower you to protect your child's future with confidence. All future, freedom and success lay ahead of young pianist Stephen de Bastion in 1930s Hungary. Life whirled headily around cocktails, romance, applause and the buzz of Budapest late into the night. Then, 1939. Stephen's world disintegrates and this becomes a story of his brutal descent, of his time in labour camps, of Mauthausen and Gunskirchen and the unimaginable horrors he endured during the Holocaust as a man of Jewish descent. Yet, this is also a tale of extraordinary escape ... and the piano, waiting for him. The same piano that Roxanne de Bastion , his granddaughter, inherits when her father dies. It has been in the family over one hundred years but it is only when, deep in grief, she discovers a cassette recording of Stephen, that the astonishing history of the piano, the man and her family begins to unravel. Weaving together his original recordings, unpublished memoirs, letters and documents, Roxanne sings out her grandfather's story of music and hope, lost and found. Luminous and profoundly moving, this book captures the great spirit of one man in the face of darkness and the hope that echoes down through generations. Join us for an evening of talk, memory and some live music with Roxanne. Further details: 01179252274 Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

TechNExt festival is a celebration of the North East's thriving technology sector. Through a mixture of curated and community designed fringe events, TechNExt will serve as a showcase of the diversity, achievements and breadth of the tech sector in the North East. The festival aims to help drive the message that the North East is a region that is passionate about supporting, developing and growing its tech sector for the benefit of everyone. Festival Party - Thursday 19 June (7.30pm - 12.00am) - BALTIC Riverside Cafe, Gateshead Complete your festival week the right way. TechNExt invites you to an informal festival party at the iconic BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts. It’s a moment to revel in the remarkable achievements of the North East tech sector while meeting and catching up with fellow tech enthusiasts and attendees from across the UK. Food is provided, and as part of our Good Festival Ambition, please note that all catering at this event will be vegetarian. All additional dietary requirements will also be catered for, please state your needs on the booking form. Good Festival Ambition The festival is planned as a Good Festival with ‘for good’ being a core value running through everything. This will ensure a focus on quality, inclusivity, diversity, accessibility, and sustainability. As part of this ambition, we are offering a buddy system where attendees can select the option to be met by a friendly face from the TechNExt team or wider community on arrival. Your buddy would help you feel comfortable at the event perhaps by chatting over a coffee on arrival, introducing you to new faces, or help you understand more about the content of the event and what's planned that day. You can apply for a 'buddy' through the ticket purchase process. We are also committed to minimising the impact of our events on the environment. We work closely with our clients, venues, suppliers and delegates to reduce the impact of our activity wherever possible. Last year, the festival's carbon from curated events was 7.49 tCO2e and we decided, as an ethical offset, to donate the equivalent carbon credit value to a North East environmental charity, Groundwork North East & Cumbria for their nature-based solutions programme. More measures will be intoduced this year, tracking the festival's carbon footprint once again, leading us to further reduce our impact and become carbon neutral in future years. You will be asked to complete some questions about your planned travel which will help us create the carbon footprint for the festival. Refunds Please note our ticket refund policy below: Up to 12 weeks before the event starts - full refund More than 8 weeks before the event starts, but less than 12 weeks - 50% refund Less than 8 weeks before the event starts - no refund Information Source: TechNExt Festival | eventbrite

Speaker Georgina Williams-Hodgson is the founder of nousana, a business born from her own period of deep personal transformation. Isolated during lockdown and facing some of life’s toughest challenges, she began to question everything—from the chemicals in her food to the wider narratives shaping our world. This awakening led her into the realms of energy, frequency, and holistic health, igniting a passion to help others reconnect with themselves and break free from limiting beliefs. One area of particular interest became the topic of death—how different cultures approach it, the science and spirituality behind near-death experiences, and what might lie beyond. This exploration inspired Quantanimo, a thought-provoking event series designed to expand perspectives and help people make the most of their life experience. Playfully blending personal memoir, criticism and candid new interviews with filmmakers from across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, Ryan Gilbey 's engaging and dynamic It Used to be Witches is a non-chronological treasure-hunt through queer cinema past and present. Andrew Haigh (All of Us Strangers ), Cheryl Dunye ( The Watermelon Woman ), Isabel Sandoval ( Lingua Franca ) and Bruce LaBruce ( No Skin Off My Ass ) are among the directors who reveal how queer artists use film to express their most personal truths-and to challenge, defy and outrage a world that would rather they didn't exist. That world might look rainbow-coloured from some angles, with the likes of Brokeback Mountain , Call Me By Your Name , Moonlight and Portrait of a Lady on Fire winning awards and acclaim. But as queer and trans people find themselves increasingly under attack, It Used to Be Witches asks whether cinema can be an effective weapon of resistance and change, and celebrates an outlaw spirit which refuses to die. We're looking forward to a conversation with Ryan Gilbey , who has been writing on film for more than 30 years. He was named the Independent / Sight and Sound Young Film Journalist of the Year in 1993, won a Press Gazette award for his reviews at the New Statesman where he was film critic (2006-2023) and has written for the Guardian since 2002.
