Cold War Scotland | National Museum of Scotland

Cold War Scotland | National Museum of Scotland

Jul 13, 2024–Jan 4, 2026 (UTC)
Edinburgh
Exhibitions
The Cold War was a 40-year nuclear stand-off between the USA and the Soviet Union after the Second World War. Scotland’s unique landscape provided a useful base for Allied military preparations and research. The impact of the war still lingers in Scottish politics, culture and memory. Scots played an active role in the global conflict as soldiers within intelligence services and as part of voluntary civil defences. The exhibition will draw on Scotland’s rich history of Cold War-era protest and activism. Cold War Scotland is an output of Materialising the Cold War, a collaborative research project between National Museums Scotland and the University of Stirling. The project explores how the Cold War heritage is represented and how museums can adapt to tell this story in future. Materialising the Cold War is funded by a major grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Edinburgh
Exhibitions
Explore the creation and use of maps during the Second World War. Discover their use through personal stories, photography, and memorabilia. Between 1939 and 1945 over 3 billion maps were produced for the Allied, Soviet and German forces. Used to navigate the jungles of south-east Asia or for devising an escape plan, the maps on display are now mementoes. Maps kept alongside medals and photographs to say ‘I was there.’ You'll find aerial photography, war diaries, and even a fashionable dress made from escape and evasion maps. The exhibition introduces us to a Prisoner of War, an RAF pilot, a Brigadier and an army chaplain through the maps they kept as a memory of their war service.

We run for 90 minutes, and divide that time by the number of performers who sign up to get our set times. There's a bell 30 seconds before the end of each set, and a gong at the end which performers CANNOT go past! Sign up is 7-7.30 - comedy, music, poetry, short stories, film scripts, magic acts - we've had all sorts over the years, so just rock on down! Information Source: Typewronger Books | eventbrite

Elizabethan theatre is flourishing. But will a brand-new Tudor musical romp, in which Good Queen Bess takes to the stage herself, be the making of this heroine or spell the beginning of her downfall? The stage is set for regicidal rivalries, devious dramatics, and plotting playwrights. Beset by misunderstandings and a script that…let’s just say…needs some work, this production promises to be largely historical, always hysterical. As the old saying goes…thy show must go-eth on! ★★★★★ – “So entertaining…laugh-out-loud funny” ★★★★★ – “Riotously fun. Hugely enjoyable” ★★★★★ – “The ultimate British theatrical experience” – Hastings Independent Press ★★★★★ – “Great fun for the whole family…my kids are still talking about it!” On Tuesday 1st July, join us at Lauriston Castle. Bring your own cushions, and camping-chairs and join us on our 10th anniversary open-air adventure. Come prepared for the weather - the performance will continue come rain come shine! This performance is an outdoor performance. We recommend that you bring blankets/chairs/cushions etc. to sit on. Come prepared for the weather with warm coats and waterproofs etc, as the performance will continue come rain come shine! We ask that you don’t bring umbrellas as these can obscure the view for other people in the audience. 7pm start time, picnics welcome from 6pm. The performance will last approximately 100 minutes (+ a 20 minute interval). We recommend booking tickets for this performance online in advance. A fun workshop to introduce you to the art of spinning your own yarn using a drop spindle, a great activity for fans of crocheting, knitting, weaving or tapestry. What is a drop spindle? A drop spindle is a tool for spinning fibres into lengths of yarn or threads. As the name suggests, it drops down and hangs from your fibres whilst its spinning. This 1.5 hour workshop will show you the basics of spinning wool fibres into your own yarn, which you will then be able to take home. You will have use of a drop spindle in the workshops, and a choice of many colours of fibre to use interchangeably. There will also be starter kits available for purchase if you would like to continue at home! You will learn: How to hold and use a drop spindle How to handle wool tops How to change colours How to ply your yarn A great way for any yarn enthusiast to spend a few hours discussing yarn origins and future projects whilst learning a new addicitive skill. Please consider the following: This workshop requires fine motor skills in the hands and fingers of both hands, and requires full movement of both arms. You can of course take breaks when needed, but you will need to be able to work with your arms elevated for extended periods. You will be seated forward in your seat for the majority of the session, again of course you may take breaks! I look forward to spinning with you! Join Dr Joanna Härmä at Blackwell’s of Edinburgh, as she joins us on Wednesday 2nd July, at 7pm, to speak about her second book, How the New Education Establishment Betrayed the World’s Poorest Children: Broken Promises, Broken Schools, published by Bloomsbury Academic in February 2025. The book takes the reader through the author’s journey, both practical and intellectual, spanning two decades. It brings a critical lens to widely-held beliefs in the power of education and the need to deliver this quickly and at scale, outlining all but insurmountable obstacles to realising local, national and global ambitions. Highly contextualised direct experience over 20 years from one part of Uttar Pradesh, India, is blended with historical sources and primary and secondary data from a broad range of African countries. The book considers public, private and blended approaches to education delivery. Joanna is a writer and researcher who has conducted extensive research on low-fee private schooling targeting lower income communities in India, Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Mozambique. This research was carried out while working on a range of donor and foundation-funded projects and she has also worked in other African and Asian countries on issues other than private schooling. While living and working in Nigeria, she designed and oversaw the only comprehensive census of private schools in Lagos, amongst other research into private schooling in the country, including Kwara State and the federal capital, Abuja. She has also worked on other types of projects in Liberia, Malawi and Bangladesh. Her first book, Low-fee Private Schooling and Poverty in Developing Countries, was published in 2021 by Bloomsbury Academic. - Doors: 6.30pm, event starts: 7pm, please arrive early to secure a good seat. Tickets are £3and there is a Ticket & Book option which includes a signed copy of Dr Joanna Härmä's new book. The bookshop has level access, events are seated and speakers use microphones.
