Blythe Spirit: The Remarkable Life of Ronald Blythe with Ian Collins | 80 Hill Rise
Apr 2, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Richmond
Join us at Books on the Rise on April 2nd at 7pm for a deep dive into the remarkable life of Ronald Blythe with Ian Collins. Ian will be interviewed followed by a QnA with the audience! About Blythe Spirit: The Remarkable Life of Ronald Blythe A revealing, intimate biography of England's greatest - and most private - country writer, by his close friend Ian Collins. Ronald Blythe (1922-2023), author of the inimitable Akenfield, was a prolific and poetic chronicler of rural and spiritual life, nature and literature. He spent a joyful century close to his Suffolk roots, time travelling in his imagination and publishing forty books and thousands of essays. His wide creative network included John and Christine Nash, Cedric Morris, Benjamin Britten, E. M. Forster, Patricia Highsmith and Richard Mabey.
From finding Thomas Hardy in February rain and John Clare in country tracks, to talking to his white cat and reading through a dragonfly's wings, the Blythe gift was to marvel in the everyday. His writing was intimate, meditative and often laced with a wry humour, inviting readers to share his enchanting perspective on the world. Yet few knew the 'real' Ronald Blythe. Leaving school at 14, he educated himself in libraries, churches and walks in the East Anglian landscape. He never spoke about early poverty and traumatic experience in the war, while his sexuality was kept private except from those closest to him.
Drawing on unparalleled access to letters, notebooks, published works, drafts, and conversations from decades of friendship, Ian Collins tells the full story of Ronald Blythe for the first time. The result is a sensitive, revelatory portrait which celebrates a fascinating, complex man and casts new light on one of our greatest writers. Praise for Blythe Spirit 'An intimate and insightful portrait of the peerless observer of rural life' RICHARD MABEY 'Moving, candid, vivid, it is all that we could hope for in a memoir of this unique and treasured writer' ROWAN WILLIAMS
'As a boy I dreamed of scholars and saints wandering around markets and cornfields, and of artists and poets sitting under the trees.' About Ian Collins Ian Collins is a writer and curator. He has written numerous biographies and monographs, including the Runciman Award-winning John Craxton: A Life of Gifts and James Dodds: The Blue Boat which won the Creative Suffolk Author Award. He had a long career as an arts writer for the Eastern Daily Press and has worked with the Aldeburgh Festival, Sainsbury Centre in Norwich, British Museum, Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Benaki Museum in Athens and Meşher Istanbul. He lives in Suffolk and Greece.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club: The Great When by Alan Moore | 80 Hill Rise
Apr 15, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Richmond
Join us at the bookshop for a discussion of The Great When by Alan Moore! About The Great When: A propulsive tour through a fantastical London, where history and myth collide, murder stalks the streets and the mundane becomes very magical indeed…
The year is 1949, the city London. Amidst the smog of the capital is Dennis Knuckleyard, a hapless eighteen-year-old employed by a second-hand bookshop. One day, on an errand to acquire books for sale, Dennis discovers a novel that simply does not exist. It is a fictitious book, a figment from another novel. Yet it is physically there in his hands. How?
Dennis has stumbled on a book from the Great When, a magical version of London beyond time and space, where reality blurs with fiction and concepts such as Crime and Poetry are incarnated as wondrous, terrible beings. But this other, magical London must remain a secret: if Dennis cannot find a way to return this book to where it belongs, he risks bizarre and disastrous repercussions, such as his body being turned inside out (or worse). So begins a journey delving deep into the city's occult underbelly and tarrying with an eccentric cast of sorcerers, gangsters, and murderers – some from legend, some all too real, and all with plans of their own. Soon Dennis finds himself at the centre of an explosive series of events that may alter and endanger both Londons forever. Thrilling, lyrical and sparkling with dark humour,The Great Whenis the first book in a new series bySunday Times-bestseller and icon, Alan Moore.

You don't have to do any work, we have a set of silly questions to prompt each date, so you literally just have to turn up. We change the age ranges for our speed dating events and this month we are focusing on finding love (or a cheeky snog) for people aged 35-50 ! 💘But don't worry about bringing your ID, we aren't going to police it 😉. Come alone or come with friends, we don't mind, as long as you come ready for a night full of laughs!

Davis and Lee were two proud, contained, but otherwise very different personalities. In normal times it is unlikely they would have been friends. Yet somehow from 1862 through the end of the war they evolved a working relationship that produced almost a model commander-in-chief-general-in-chief team, achieving seemingly impossible things, even if ultimate victory eluded them. $10 general admission; free to members with promo code Member Reception 5:15 - 6:00 PM

(Email - andrew@dancesavoirfaire.com to book)METAPHYSICAL LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE, often referred to as Universal Laws or Hermetic principles, are scientific, spiritual or philosophical concepts that describe the underlying order and interconnectedness of reality. Suggesting that our conscious and unconscious thoughts, beliefs, intentions, and actions have a direct impact on the experiences we manifest in life; some common examples include the Law of Attraction, Polarity, Vibration, Cause and Effect. Some of these laws are based on scientific findings by Einstein and Neils Bohr to name only two. Others originate from ancient wisdoms that have stood the test of time and are part of everyday life. However others are considered metaphysical, meaning they are not directly provable by scientific methods, but are based on philosophical and spiritual principles. However advances in science and measuring capabilities, it is slowly becoming possible to prove some of these more metaphysical laws particularly in Quantum Physics. While many spiritual teaching and physists such as Bohr and Einstein disagree on the interpretation of such 'laws', especially over the nature of reality and the role of observation in determining outcomes (famously encapsulated in Einstein's quote, God does not play dice ), they all share a profound respect for the scientific process, empirical evidence, and the pursuit of deeper knowledge. These debates have had a lasting impact on the development of quantum theory and the philosophy of science, spirituality and life. “Science is not in opposition to spirituality but purely a way of measuring it, now or in the future.” METAPHYSICAL DANCE IS: A continuously evolving therapeutic self development coaching tool.A mindful lense or tool through which one can observe, embody and understand the universal 'metaphysical' laws such as the law of Vibration, Attention, Intention, Alignment, Balance, Leadership, Followership, Timing, Synchronicity and many more that are Meta beyond , within and govern the 'Physical'. And how they all apply to you and the way you move, be and belong in the world. It is the understanding, integration and balancing of Masculine (Structure & Discipline) with Feminine (Flow & Freedom) Where structure and discipline are there to enable harmonious and efficient flow not prohibit it.A way of regulating and balancing the body's nervous system. An embodied self-enquiry, diagnostic tool to bring one's subconscious programs and beliefs (root causes) into the light of compassionate awareness, to facilitate a re-wiring of our brains and mastering our bodies and lives.Builds connection, confidence and faith in oneself and life.A direct and experiential way of integrating and understanding spiritual teachings such as Oneness and Love.A continual and delicate process of enlightenment, transformation and restoration. An embodied sole to soul exploration and understanding of the universal principles of energy in motion. This workshop is for anyone who is curious about the deeper or bigger questions of life! Such as...How do I find more confidence, peace, joy? How do I attract and maintain successful and loving relationships? How can I become a better leader / boss? How can I become a better...?
