Join us for an evening of readings and discussion with the University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing 2025 Writer Fellows Daisy Hildyard and Padraig Regan. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the books: EMERGENCY is a novel about the dissolving boundaries between all life on earth. Stuck at home alone under lockdown, a woman recounts her 1990s childhood in rural Yorkshire. She watches a kestrel hunting, helps a farmer with a renegade bull, and plays out with her best friend, Clare. Around her in the village her neighbours are arguing, keeping secrets, caring for one another, trying to hold down jobs. In the woods and quarry there are foxcubs fighting, plants competing for space, ageing machines, and a three-legged deer who likes cake. These local phenomena interconnect and spread out from China to Nicaragua as pesticides circulate, money flows around the planet, and bodies feel the force of distant power. A story of remote violence and a work of praise for a persistently lively world, brilliantly written, surprising, evocative and unsettling, Daisy Hildyard's Emergency reinvents the pastoral novel for the climate change era. The poems of SOME INTEGRITY bring something new to the Irish lyric tradition. Queerness is a way of looking, a perspective, grounded in an awareness of the porous and provisional nature of our bodies. The book's social encounters and exchanges, its responses to the work of artists, its figures in a landscape, and its considerations of food and desire, work as capsule narratives and as an exhilarating extension of that lyric tradition. About the authors: Daisy Hildyard is author of two novels – Emergency (2022) and Hunters in the Snow (2014) – and one work of nonfiction, The Second Body (2017). She lives in the north of England. Padraig Regan's debut Collection Some Integrity was published by Carcanet in 2022 and was awarded the Clarissa Luard Award and shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. They are the author of two poetry pamphlets: Delicious (Lifeboat, 2016) and Who Seemed Alive & Altogether Real (Emma Press, 2017). In 2015, they were a recipient of an Eric Gregory Award, and in 2020 they were awarded the Ireland Chair of Poetry Bursary Prize. They hold a PhD on creative-critical and hybridised writing practices in medieval texts and the work of Anne Carson from the Seamus Heaney Centre, Queen's University Belfast, where they were a Ciaran Carson Writing and the City Fellow in 2021. They were Fellow Commoner in Creative Arts at Trinity College Cambridge from 2022- 2024. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of either of the books. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of a book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Join us for an evening with Dr Ruth Lamont, Dr Eloise Moss and Dr Charlotte Wildman where they will be discussing their non-fiction book, FRIENDLESS OR FORSAKEN? Child Emigration from Britain to Canada, 1860-1935, which records the bravery and resilience of children whose lives were altered by this traumatic and divisive episode in the history of empire. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book, which is available at a special discounted price for this event . About the book: Between 1860 and 1935, about 100,000 impoverished children were emigrated from Britain to Canada to seek a new life in the land of plenty. Charities, religious workers, philanthropists, and state-run institutions such as workhouses and orphanages all sent children abroad, claiming that this was the only way to prevent their becoming criminals or joining the masses of working-class unemployed. Friendless or Forsaken? follows the story of child emigration agencies operating in North West England, tracing the imperial relationships that enabled agents to send children away from their homes and parents, who often lost sight of them forever. The book sheds light on public support for the schemes, their financial beneficiaries, and how parents were persuaded to consent to sending their children across the world - frequently without fully realizing what rights they had signed away. The story charts the legal measures introduced to maintain and regulate child emigration schemes, as well as the way home children were portrayed as both needy and dangerous on each side of the Atlantic and how the children themselves sought to overcome prejudice and isolation in an unfamiliar country. About the authors: Dr Ruth Lamont is Reader in Child and Family Law at the University of Manchester. Her research focuses on the migration and movement of children between countries in both a modern and historical context. She is particularly interested in the role of violence in the family and the response of the law to the identification of victims of violence. Her research has been cited in the English courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union, and she has presented to the Hague Conference on Private International Law. She is currently UKRI Thematic Research Lead for Crime and Justice at the UK Parliament. Dr Eloise Moss is Senior Lecturer in Modern British History at the University of Manchester. Her research focusses on histories of crime, gender, and urban space, as well as discrimination and inequalities. She has previously authored a book on the history of burglary in London from the Victorian period to the mid-twentieth century (Oxford University Press, 2019), as well as a forthcoming book on sex, crime, and civil rights protests in British hotels (Bloomsbury, 2025), funded by the British Academy. She is a regular ‘talking head’ on TV history documentaries and has also worked as historical consultant for the BBC’s Sister Boniface Mysteries. Her BlueSky handle is: @ladyburglar.bsky.social Dr Charlotte Wildman is Senior Lecturer in Modern British History at the University of Manchester. Ashtyn’s vulnerable and deeply resonant songwriting has earned her critical acclaim and accolades, including nominations for Acoustic Act of the Year (2024) and Americana Artist of the Year (2023) at the Arkansas Country Music Awards. Additionally, she was named the Arkansas State Music Ambassador by Arkansas Tourism, recognizing her significant contributions to the state's musical heritage. However, as she approached the end of her high school years, she felt an irresistible urge to create her own stories through songwriting. Her first attempt, Ruby Lou, was born from a place of pain and loss as she grappled with the transition away from a close friendship that had defined her adolescence. For Sarah, her songs are like little time capsules, preserving memories and experiences that she fears she might otherwise forget. She hopes that her music can provide solace for others in the same way, offering a temporary respite from the weight of the world. With her raw, emotive songwriting, Sarah Lily brings her unique perspective and experiences to the forefront of her art. Make Art: Manchester is a free in-person art group is an opportunity to connect with other artists in a relaxed and creative space. Make Art is a place to talk about art, life, and creativity, hatch new ideas and explore your potential as an artist. The group is facilitated by two Outside In ambassadors, so is both by and for the community of artists who face major barriers to the mainstream art world. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own creative projects to work on, in a communal space. We will always have some art materials on hand for those who wish to try something new. The idea of Make Art sessions is to develop a community of artists, particularly those more prone to isolation. What art you choose to make during the session will always be up to you, and as facilitators, we will take direction from the wider community as to what direction to take the sessions as the group develops. For those who work better with some structure, we will set a theme for each session, which attendees can choose to work to or simply ignore. For example, January’s theme will be ‘Inspiration – What inspires you?’ Artists are welcome to bring along and work in any and all materials, provided that they are appropriately contained on the way into the art room, i.e. in bags, boxes or other suitable containers. Art materials are not permitted to be carried through the main gallery, so we ask that all our attendees use the step-free entrance at the back of the building. This group is open to people regardless of skill level, how long you’ve been creating, or what your background is. Even if you don’t feel like you can call yourself an ‘artist’, for whatever reason, but you want to get crafty in a room with some other people, then we’re here for you. You do not need to be a member of Outside In to attend the group, so long as you meet Outside In’s criteria of facing barriers to the art world, whether that is through isolation, disability, mental illness, or social circumstances. If you are unsure, you can always get in touch. Places are very limited, so please book your ticket in advance. If it is showing as sold out on Eventbrite, there may still be places available - email Beth Hopkins Community Development Manager at beth.hopkins@outsidein.org.uk to find out. Please let Beth know if you have any access requirements, for example disabled parking, a quiet break out space, or to bring someone with you for support. Come along to meet other artists and make art! About Outside In Outside In works with artists who encounter barriers to the artworld due to health, disability, and social circumstance. You can find out more on our website: outsidein.org.uk. You do not need to already be an Outside In artist to take part, but you do need to face barriers to the art world. If you're unsure please get in touch with Beth to talk it through. Accessibility We aim to make the group as accessible as possible for everyone coming. Everyone's needs are different, so if you have requirements please get in touch with Beth at beth.hopkins@outsidein.org.uk to let us know how we can make sure the session works for you. For example, you might need a quiet breakout space, space for an electric wheelchair or walker, guide dogs, and you are also welcome to bring someone with you for support (please book a place for them too). You can read more about accessibility at the Whitworth here: whitworth.manchester.ac.uk/visit/access. We will be using a private room on the ground floor, which is wheelchair accessible. We will be providing labels for name badges and traffic light stickers for communication interaction at every session. More information here: stimpunks.org/access/interaction.Attendees are welcome to bring PAs/carers.Gender-neutral and accessible toilets are across the hall from the room we will be using. The nearest Changing Places toilet is at Manchester University, just further down Oxford Road.Refreshments will be provided. We are always open to both questions and feedback on accessibility.Directions Follow signs for step-free access to The Whitworth on Denmark Road. Enter through the Garden entrance. Turn right, go to the end of the hall. The private room we are using is on the right, opposite the bathrooms. All artists need to use this entrance, not just those with step-free needs. Information Source: Outside In | eventbrite

2-Day Glazes for Wood Firing Workshop 15 & 16 March 2025 We’re excited to offer a two-day course on glazes designed specifically for wood-firing at stoneware temperatures, led by renowned French ceramic artist and kiln firer Claude Aussage. This intensive workshop delves into the chemistry and techniques required to create glazes that thrive in the unique conditions of wood-fired kilns, with a particular focus on the high-fired stoneware range. Claude’s course covers essential topics such as: • Understanding glaze chemistry: The role of fluxes, silica, and alumina in achieving the desired melting behavior and surface qualities under wood-firing conditions. • Developing glaze recipes: How to adjust base recipes to enhance the ash interaction and atmospheric effects characteristic of wood-fired surfaces. • Testing and refining: Techniques for small-batch glaze testing, firing analysis, and adapting glazes to specific kilns and clays. This workshop precedes a five-day kiln-building and firing course, giving participants the opportunity to expand their expertise further by applying their glazes in practice. Attendees are welcome to enroll in any of the courses individually or as a combined learning experience. Having Claude in the UK is a rare and valuable opportunity. His expertise and passion make each session a unique event, providing both inspiration and practical skills. He returns periodically to share his knowledge, and every visit feels like a special occasion for our ceramics community. Whether you’re just beginning to explore high-fired glazes or are looking to refine your wood-firing techniques, this is an unparalleled opportunity to learn from a master of the craft in a hands-on, collaborative setting. Fastfiring Kiln Building Course 17-21 March 2025 £750.00 SAVE YOUR PLACE NOW £50 Your Eventbrite booking allows you to book a place. Once you have booked a place we will contact you to arrange a payment link for the balance of your course payment. Returning to Oxford Kilns, we have our next dates for our Fastfiring Kiln Building Course. This course is led by Claude Aussage, one of Europe's leading kiln builders. This is a wood-firing kiln of his own design, developed from decades of kiln building across the world, and adapted in the light of over a hundred firings at Oxford to meet the conditions and requirements of our kilnsite. These are the really excellent fastfire kilns, that are in almost constant use at Oxford Kilns, and on which we run our woodfiring courses. These kilns are highly adaptable, and will fire on scrap wood to 1300 degrees/cone 12 in reducing conditions over 8 to14 hours. They can produce an excellent array of wood-fired effects. The course consists of a kiln build and a first firing. It includes lectures on kilns, woodfiring and ceramics and is co-taught by Dr Robin WIlson, director of Oxford Kilns, ceramic artist, anthopologist and archaeologist. Robin has a decade of leading a high paced programme of firings at Oxford, evolving the firing techniques rapidly to make the very best of the kilns and wood. You will be able to bring your own pots and fire them in the kiln you build. There is free camping on site, with hot showers and an out-door kitchen, or you can arrange your own accommodation locally. There are a large number of local AirB&Bs. Limited accommodation at our fieldstudy centre in the Woods is also available for those booking early in advance. Usually firing teams cook and eat communally on site, which we will arrange nearer the time. For help and advice, contact Dr Robin Wilson of Oxford Kilns. We are thrilled to be welcoming Alex Allison and Curtis Garner to the shop for an evening of queer stories touching on masculinity and desire. Both incredible coming of age stories about knowing yourself and finding your own voice, Alex and Curtis will be discussing GREATEST OF ALL TIME and ISAAC with Lara Williams. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of either book. About the books: About Greatest Of All Time: Samson Kabarebe is on the verge of stardom. At just nineteen, he's poised to take the football world by storm. Joining a struggling Premier League team, he steps into the spotlight, taking over the position-and squad number-of a rising homegrown talent who is wrestling with his own dreams and desires. What begins as resentment between the two young athletes quickly evolves into an intense, undeniable bond. Samson's fiery drive, electrifying skills and irresistible charm spark a transformation, not just in the fortunes of the team, but in the lives around him. As their connection deepens, the story hurtles into a high-stakes world of competition, passion and raw want. Both men are forced to confront the pressures of masculinity, the ever-present threat of scandal, and the fragile balance of living in a body that could betray you at any moment. About Isaac: In modern-day London, inexperienced teenager Isaac loses his virginity through a dating app - a disappointing yet addictive experience. Overwhelmed by his A-Level exams and uncertain future, he spends his last summer before university escaping into a dizzying new world of casual sex with forgettable men. Until he meets twenty-eight-year-old Harrison at a party. Isaac is immediately infatuated by the handsome, charismatic artist, but as they grow closer, his sense of self becomes increasingly hazy. Harrison's demands shift constantly, and while Isaac tries everything to prove his worthiness, jeopardising his relationships with his mother and his best friend in the process, he must ask himself: is he complicit in his own suffering? Is Harrison the reason he has lost himself, or did he even know who he was to begin with? About the authors: Alex Allison(b. 1991) lives and works in London. Alex is a graduate of the Centre for New Writing MA at University of Manchester. His debut novel, The Art of the Body, was published in 2019. It won a Somerset Maugham Award and was longlisted for the Desmond Elliot Prize. Alex is a fan and co-owner of AFC Wimbledon. Curtis Garner was born in Cornwall in 1996. When he was eighteen, he moved to London to study Creative Writing and English Literature at the University of Greenwich. He graduated in 2017 and has been working in publishing since. In 2020, he also received an MA with Distinction from the Manchester Writing School, where much of Isaac was written. In his spare time, he reviews novels on Instagram (@queer_novels). He lives in Hackney. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of either of the books. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Our event format is usually a 45 minute discussion between the author and interviewer, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions. There will be the opportunity to get your book signed/dedicated after the event. Events are a brilliant opportunity to discover new books, meet authors and likeminded readers and learn something new. Support your local bookshop and help us keep the Manchester literary scene vibrant and exciting.
