Casting & Sculpture in Jesmonite (Wed & Thurs, 13 - 14 August 2025) | London Sculpture Workshop,

Aug 13–Aug 14, 2025 (UTC+0)
London
Arts Sculpture
You will have the opportunity to work hands-on, constructing geometric and curved forms, creating decorative effects using pigment and you will learn how to replicate other materials and textures using Jesmonite. Jesmonite can be used to replicate the appearance and texture of any surface finish, and even the finest of detail. It can mimic the appearance of most materials such as stone, wood, leather and fabric. It is strong and durable, can be pigmented to any colour and used to create decorative surface effects. It is often used as lightweight alternative to stone and concrete. It has become an increasingly popular material widely used by artists, designers and prop-makers. Jesmonite is a brand name for a group of products that have either a gypsum or cementitious base and a water based acrylic resin making it kinder to the environment than others. This two day course will teach you how to use both Jesmonite systems to cast from different types of moulds, how to colour Jesmonite, how to laminate it and how to use it to mimic other materials. Day 1: Introduction to the two different types of Jesmonite before experimentation with mould making techniques using Polypropylene sheets that can be cut, scored and folded to make geometric and curved moulds to cast into. You will learn how to use Jesmonite pigments to create decorative effects such as Terrazzo and marbling and make use of metal powders to produce imitation metal casts. We will finish the day by making a small, simple silicone mould ready for tomorrow and finishing processes such as polishing. Day 2: Using the silicone moulds, we will look at laminating Jesmonite to produce very strong thin castings before progressing onto making larger moulds (either in polypropylene, wood, card or moulds brought from home) to learn to cast hollow objects. In both cases we will be using the cementitious Jesmonite casting system to explore the types of imitation stone finishes. Please note there will be a 1 hour lunch break each day (lunch is not provided) Basic materials are all included. Please note the cost of the course includes 1 kg of jesmonite. Additional jesmonite is available to purchase on the day if required. Open to all levels including beginners. Please wear protective clothing. Health and Safety briefing will be given. The Jane Austen Book Club at Hatchards, St. Pancras. | Hatchards

The Jane Austen Book Club at Hatchards, St. Pancras. | Hatchards

Aug 13, 2025 (UTC+1)
London
Arts
In celebration of the 250th birthday of Jane Austen, we are very excited to announce the Jane Austen Book Club here at Hatchards! Over the next year, we hope you can join us as we meet monthly to discuss each of Jane Austen's novels in turn. The meetings will alternate between Hatchards, Piccadilly and Hatchards St. Pancras, with this month's meeting taking place at our S t. Pancras shop. Hosted by Hatchards booksellers Siena James and Rachel Holdway! This month's book is: Love and Freindship and Other Youthful Writings Jane Austen's brilliant, hilarious - and often outrageous - early stories, sketches and pieces of nonsense. Jane Austen's earliest writing dates from when she was just eleven years, and already shows the hallmarks of her mature work: wit, acute insight into human folly, and a preoccupation with manners, morals and money. But it is also a product of the eighteenth century in which she grew up - dark, grotesque, often surprisingly bawdy, and a far cry from the polished, sparkling novels of manners for which she became famous. Drunken heroines, babies who bite off their mother's fingers, and a letter-writer who has murdered her whole family all feature in these very funny pieces. This edition includes all of Austen's juvenilia, including her 'History of England' - written by 'a partial, prejudiced, and ignorant Historian' - and the novella 'Lady Susan', in which the anti-heroine schemes and cheats her way through high society. Taken together, they offer a fascinating - and often surprising - insight into the early Austen. This major new edition is the first time Austen's juvenilia has appeared in Penguin Classics. Edited by Professor Christine Alexander, it includes an introduction, notes and other useful editorial materials. Do join us for what promises to be an evening of scintillating discussion! Your ticket includes a glass of wine or soft drink and £3 off the price of next month's book. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

Photo: Churchill Statue by Ivor Roberts-Jones (detail) - © David Charnick 2021 Guide number if booking closed: 07982 132231 In 1940 Winston Churchill became Britain's Prime Minister, with the task of steering the nation through the nightmare of the Second World War. But what else do you know about him? Churchill's political career is one of great achievement, and as a result one of great controversy. By today's standards there are things to condemn - but also things to understand. And some fact-checking wouldn't go amiss. Meet me at the Churchill statue at the northeast corner of Parliament Square, close to Westminster Underground Station (District and Circle Lines, and Jubilee Line). The tour will take approximately two hours, and finishes back at Parliament Square.
