Taster Session - Canoe and kayak | Bristol Avon Sailing Club

Jun 3, 2025 (UTC+0)
Bristol
Sports & Fitness
Tasters Sessions are offered on Tuesdays in May and June. They are an opportunity for beginners to try paddling for the first time with an experienced paddler/coach or for club members to meet and enjoy time on the water together. It's a good way to meet other members of the club. It is a gentle paddle on the River Avon in kayaks and canoes and is suitable for adults and children over 8 and most abilities. Please do contact us if you want to check if it will be OK for you. We ask that if you have a child paddling with us you stay at the sailing club or nearby in case your child wants to finish early or gets cold. We meet at 6.30pm at the Bristol Avon Sailing Club, get everyone sorted with boats and kit and then get you on the water. We paddle either upstream or downstream depending on conditions. There is no charge for parking. There are changing facilities, toilets and showers (male and female) so bring a towel. We aim to be off the water by 8.30pm. After the paddle some of us head to the nearby pub for a drink and cheesy chips. You'd be very welcome to join us. What do I need to bring? You need to bring water, a snack and a spare set of dry clothes. We recommend wearing shorts or leggings - not jeans! A warm layer like a fleece is a good idea for cooler days. Avoid cotton t-shirts and bottoms. If you have one - a wet-suit is great. If windy you might want to wear a cagoule. You will need to wear something on your feet - wet suit boots/beach shoes or trainers you don't mind getting wet are ideal. Kit If you require kit - boat, paddle, spraydeck, helmet and buoyancy aid then we can provide it for you. We ask that all paddlers wear a helmet for their own safety. Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. We look forward to paddling with you. Thank you To the volunteers from NACC who make Taster Sessions possible. I love my country, it is like paradise. I fondly remember picking fresh mango and guava. My passion for cooking began at age 10, helping my mum clean okra and learning to haggle in the fish markets with my dad. My father was a teacher and provided for our family and his four sisters. My mother was the oldest daughter in her family, so everyone would eat at our home. She was very generous and always cooked extra for those in need. Sadly, because of the civil war in Sri Lanka, my family had to move to Bahrain, There I worked in the welfare department of an Islamic NGO, but I was also able to use my cooking skills and I cooked for events for the Youth Group. My wife is also a very good cook and our dream is to open a restaurant. I’m very proud of my parents, they taught me to be generous, so I am excited to share my recipes, perfected over 40 years.” Finding the venue: The Mazi Project is located in a building previously called 'Deltec International' in St Catherine's Trading Estate, enter via Whitehouse Lane. I was studying Geography at university, but in 2017 I needed to leave because it was dangerous for me to stay. When I came to Bristol in 2020 I felt relief because the people were so friendly and supportive. I learnt to cook from my grandmother and stepmother when I was 15. They said you must look after yourself when you are at University. I discovered I loved cooking. The first things I cooked were rice and aubergine stew to go with lamb. When I lived in Manchester with 4 friends, I did all the cooking. In Bristol I worked in a Kurdish restaurant in Old Market. I love sharing my recipes from my country with people from different countries. Kurdish cuisine uses a lot of fresh ingredients, herbs and spices. It is very tasty but not too spicy. Kate McNab & Kim Hicks @ Bristol 1904 Arts | The Red Lodge Museum

Jun 20, 2025 (UTC+0)
Bristol
Arts
Theater
This well loved dynamic duo of Kate McNab and Kim Hicks are putting on a theatrical show at Bristol 1904 Arts that vignettes an array of the many characters from their hugely popular touring productions. Both hail from a past in the Bristol Old Vic. They tell tales and recreate scenes from a bygone era. As a flavour of what to expect, here is an extract from the Axbridge Theatre Review July 2024: Kate McNab and Kim Hicks create an evening of cosy nostalgia in Beryl’s Day Out set in a very different Bristol Zoo of 1962. A full house enjoyed Kate McNab and Kim Hicks’ series of anecdotes, sketches and jokes from that year which many in the audience like me could remember while others simply lapped up the nostalgia. Written by Kate McNab and Paul Crossthwaite the two hander takes real memories and stories from the time as its basis with Beryl’s circular tour of the Zoological Gardens in Clifton as the narrative structure. We hear from a variety of characters including Sister O’Blimey with her lavatorial notes, the zookeeper mucking out the animals, the Great Mephlsto (I think that was his name) and Scarlet O’Mara vying for a slot on TV’s Animal Magic, and the urban myth about the dodgy carpark attendant on the Downs who wasn’t employed by anyone but pocketed all those florins as visitors parked their Zephyr Zodiacs and Austin A30s. Kate McNab played the titular role of Beryl complete with an unfeasibly lavish black beehive wig while Kim Hicks filled in most of the supporting cast with quick costume changes. There was so many stories and jokes, but the highlights were the songs – The Sunny Side of the Street, Never Smile at a Crocodile, I Only Have Eyes for You and What A Difference A Day Makes. With Kate’s rich dark vocals like a coffee desert from a box of Good News chocolates, her sense of timing and movement on stage, she remains a class act with a string of theatrical hits behind her with Bristol’s Ministry of Entertainment company. Versatile is the best word to describe Kim as at times I thought there was a third actor as her commitment to each new character created such contrast to the last. This is one show you will enjoy … for one night only at Bristol 1904 Arts. Don't miss it !!! This event is open to both club members and the public but we are a small intimate venue - just 110 seats - so tickets are a first come, first served basis. This theatrical event will take place in our iconic Performance Hall within the Red Lodge, Park Row BS1 5LJ. Open to club members and the public. Doors Open: Through the Knot Garden (in Lodge Street) from 7:00pm on Friday, 9th May, 2025. Performance starts: 7:30 pm with one interval Dress code: Smart Casual Bar: Serving beers, wines, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks TICKETS: Members: £12 per person. Non-Members £15 per person. Kettlebell 201: The Rite of PassageOnce you have reached the impressive yet realistic “Timeless Simple” standard, you have choices to make. Stay on a monastic diet of swings and get-ups, slowly chipping away at “Sinister.” Or try something “same but different”: the snatch plus the clean and military press, the classic Rite of Passage. The Snatch is “the Tsar of the kettlebell lifts.” Thanks to more muscles working and twice the distance travelled, it accomplishes even more than the esteemed swing. Achieve total body explosive power, ruthless conditioning, and a vice like grip. Burn fat like never before. All with a lighter kettlebell—save space in your home, car trunk, or deployment kit. Once we have taught you the skills with our usual attention to detail, we will send you off to succeed with a Strong Endurance™ snatch plan. The one-arm Clean-and-Press will rival any other pressing exercise when it comes to shoulder strength and muscular development. It is untouchable when it comes to shoulder health, thanks to its ergonomic perfection. The military press comes equipped with the “Rite of Passage” type programming—possibly the most reliable progression ever. Three versions of the ROP—“Jurassic,” “907 Hypertrophy,” and “Heavy”—will keep you gaining for a long time. Kettlebell 201 ROP sets high goals—and gives you the skills and the roadmap to reach them. No strain on the wrists, shoulders, or elbows. No need for a rack or a spotter. A great carryover to sports and other lifts. As a bonus, an unbelievable training effect on the abs. The two lifts come fully loaded with the “Russian Countdown” cycle to make your strength skyrocket. Sign up and power to you! Information Source: Claire Booth Training LTD | eventbrite
