The Mammal Identification and Ecology Weekend is an immersive, hands-on training course designed for nature enthusiasts, ecologists, and conservationists eager to develop their knowledge of UK mammal species. Over the course participants will engage in a combination of classroom-based learning and practical fieldwork, gaining essential skills in mammal identification, and monitoring techniques.This course provides an in-depth introduction to the key distinguishing features of all UK mammal species, from their visual characteristics to field signs such as tracks, feeding remains, nests, burrows, droppings, and skeletal remains. Participants will also explore ethical considerations, conservation challenges, and the latest developments in mammal research and monitoring techniques. Accommodation and Meals are not included. Course Aim To introduce participants to the identification and ecology of UK land mammal species while equipping them with essential monitoring techniques used in conservation and research. Course Objectives By the end of the course, participants will: Be able to confidently identify all UK mammal species using a range of clues, including visual features, tracks, and other field signs. Gain a deeper understanding of the biology, behaviorbehaviour, and ecology of UK mammals. Learn key mammal monitoring skills, including fieldwork techniques. Understand the legal framework surrounding mammal conservation in the UK. Course Content (running order will vary depending on the trainer): 1. Introduction to the Course & Mammal Society Overview of the course structure, objectives, and expectations.The importance of mammal recording for conservation and research. 2. Identifying UK Mammals Small Mammals Herbivores Carnivores Bats Sea Mammals (Cetacea and Pinnipeds) 3. Field-Based Practical Sessions Mammal Monitoring Techniques: Use of thermal imaging and audio recording equipment. Setting and analysing camera traps for nocturnal species. Live-trapping small mammals using Longworth traps. Identifying and interpreting mammal footprints using footprint tunnels. 4. Mammals & the Law Overview of UK wildlife legislation related to mammal protection and conservation. Ethical considerations in mammal research and fieldwork. Who Should Attend?
