Oxford
FAST-FIRE KILN FIRING COURSE June 13,14,15 Our Fastfire Kilns Course offers the perfect introduction to wood-firing ceramics, giving you hands-on experience with wood management and the process of loading and firing wood kilns here at Oxford. We encourage you to bring bisque-fired stoneware pots to test your glaze recipes and see the unique effects wood-firing can create on your own work. Throughout the course, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to deepen your understanding of wood-firing techniques, gain insights from our experienced tutors, and share knowledge with fellow participants. These courses are also a great way to get to know our facilities and connect with the wider wood-firing community. Our site is home to a variety of wood-fired kilns, which we use for both firing courses and private hire by experienced firing teams. If you’re interested in building your own kiln, we also run specialized kiln-building courses. For accommodation, we offer free on-site camping with access to hot showers and a field kitchen. If camping isn’t your preference, you’ll find plenty of nearby Airbnbs to choose from. For those booking early, we also have limited accommodation available at our field study centre in the woods. Communal cooking and dining are a cherished part of the firing experience, and we’ll organize these closer to the course date to ensure everyone feels part of the community. We run these courses throughout the year. Our first 3 dates for 2025 are 17-19 April, 2-4 May and 13-15 June. Please ask if you have any further questions.

Oxford Symphony Orchestra Summer Concert | The Sheldonian Theatre
Jun 14, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Sheldonian Theatre, Saturday 14 June 2025, 7:30pmSchumann - Genoveva Overture
Bartók - Violin Concerto no.2
Brahms - Symphony no.4 Stefan Simonca-Oprita violin
Robert Max conductor In Schumann's only opera, Genoveva, drama ensues after a failed attempt to seduce Genoveva, the wife of Siegfrid. Mirroring the storyline, the overture follows the same dramatic trajectory, with music moving through ominous and wrenching moods, arriving at eventual majesty and triumph. Bartók's second violin concerto was written for Zoltán Székely, his long-standing recital partner. This concerto is infused with styles from Hungarian folk music, and is very much a celebration of life, and is played for us by Stefan Simonca-Oprita. Despite featuring great warmth and lyrical beauty, Brahm's 4th symphony has a definite tragic character. The finale is based on a passacaglia: a sequence variations on a bass pattern. It ends with a bleak but thrilling conclusion, cementing its place as a firm favourite in the classical repertoire.

Beethoven: The Revolution Begins, Cristian Sandrin, piano | Holywell Music Room
Jun 15, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
“Bold and courageous” – Classical Voice America “Sandrin expresses the sounds with infinite subtlety” – Nieuwe Noten Netherlands A brave new world – BBC Music Magazine An incredibly talented pianist – Piano News Germany Join acclaimed pianist and Kettner Concerts co-artistic director Cristian Sandrin for an extraordinary evening showcasing Beethoven's complete Opus 2 Piano Sonatas—the young composer's bold declaration and his emerging unique voice within the musical world of Vienna. Written to challenge the mastery of Mozart and Haydn, these three ambitious sonatas marked Beethoven's explosive debut in the world of piano sonatas. Experience the revolutionary spirit of young Beethoven as his unique voice emerges through brilliant technical passages, dramatic emotional contrasts, and surprising innovations that would forever change classical music. Witness the complete cycle performed in the elegant surroundings of the National Liberal Club—a rare opportunity to trace the evolution of Beethoven's genius across three remarkable works that announced the arrival of one of history's greatest musical revolutionaries. Programme: L van Beethoven: Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 2, No. 1 AllegroAdagioMenuetto: AllegrettoPrestissimoThe F minor sonata opens the cycle with a restless energy. Its first movement, inspired by Mozart's K. 457 sonata in the same key, features dramatic silences and sudden dynamic contrasts. The lyrical Adagio provides momentary respite before the traditional Menuetto and the fiery final Prestissimo, which pushes the technical boundaries of piano playing for its time. Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 2, No. 2 Allegro vivaceLargo appassionatoScherzo: AllegrettoRondo: GraziosoThe A major sonata expands in scale and ambition. Its brilliant opening movement demonstrates Beethoven's mastery of Classical forms while hinting at new directions. The profound Largo appassionato moves with the dignity of a slow march, while the Scherzo replaces the traditional Menuetto with greater rhythmic playfulness. The elegant Rondo finale showcases Beethoven's gift for graceful melody. Sonata No. 3 in C major, Op. 2, No. 3 Allegro con brioAdagioScherzo: AllegroAllegro assaiThe cycle culminates in the virtuosic C major sonata, the most technically demanding of the three. Its expansive first movement rivals a concerto in brilliance, while the serene Adagio explores rich harmonic territories. The playful Scherzo leads to an exhilarating finale that pushes the performer's technique to its limits, highlighting Beethoven's own legendary prowess as a pianist. Biography: Born into a family of musicians from Bucharest, Cristian Sandrin has been surrounded by classical music all his life. His frequent visits to the historic Romanian Atheneum concert hall and his attendances at the prestigious Enescu Festival shaped his musical aspirations from early childhood. Years later, he would have his own debut at the Atheneum at the age of 13. Cristian is especially devoted to the Classical and Romantic repertoire. His passion for Mozart’s piano concertos led him to direct from the keyboard several concertos during Summer Festivals at the Royal Academy of Music, as well as for the official opening of the Angela Burgess Recital Hall. From 2018–2020 he was privileged to tour the UK as an artist of the Countess of Munster Recital Scheme. Additionally, He is a scholarship holder of the Imogen Cooper Music Trust benefiting from her unique one-to-one guidance and mentorship since 2017. He graduated in 2019 from the Royal Academy of Music, receiving a DipRAM, MMus later being part of the prestigious Advanced Diploma programme. In 2023 he has been invited to become the co-Artistic Director of the much-admired Kettner Concerts which are held in the David Lloyd George Hall of the National Liberal Club, Rachmaninov’s favourite London recital room and the venue where he performed his European farewell concert. In 2021 Cristian travelled to Romania for his debut with the acclaimed George Enescu Philharmonic performing Mozart's K503 Piano Concerto in C major at the country's foremost music venue: The Romanian Atheneum.Since 2020, Cristian has performed challenging solo programmes including Beethoven's last three sonatas and Bach's Goldberg Variations in famous venues across Europe from Berlin’s Konzerthaus, the Radio Hall in Bucharest to London’s LSO St Luke’s and Holywell Music Room Oxford, Sinfonia Smith Square and Sala Puccini in Milan. In July 2025 Cristian will have his debut at Beethovenhaus in Bonn, Germany. His debut CD Correspondances (Antarctica Records 2022) featuring music by Ravel, Enescu and Cyril Scott has been highly acclaimed in Europe and accross the Atlantic: the German Magazine Piano News selected it as the CD of the Month whilst the American Record Guide named it “the highlight of this month’s listening. An Evening With Cory Doctorow | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jul 2, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
We can't wait to welcome Cory Doctorow to Blackwell's to discuss his latest novel PICKS AND SHOVELS and his wider work as an author and activist. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: Enshittification was a choice. The decay of the once-great internet into five giant websites, each filled with screenshots of the other four, was a choice. Policy choices that sidelined privacy and labor protection and ignored monopolisaiton created the enshitternet. In PICKS AND SHOVELS, Cory Doctorow visits the moment those first choices were being made, in a historical technothriller that takes us back to the heroic era of the PC revolution and the moment where it all started to go wrong. Picks and Shovels stars Martin Hench, Doctorow's hard-charging, two-fisted high-tech forensic accountant. It's a standalone novel in a series that includes the bestselling novels Red Team Blues and The Bezzle, In this volume, we learn the origin story of Silicon Valley's first - and best - finance-crime fighting spreadsheet sleuth, born in fraud and fire. About the author: Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist and journalist. He is the author of many books, most recently PICKS AND SHOVELS and THE BEZZLE (followups to RED TEAM BLUES) and THE LOST CAUSE, a solarpunk science fiction novel of hope amidst the climate emergency. He famously coined the term enshittification to describe the reduction in the quality of services provided (see: Google) as a consequence of profit-seeking. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of a book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Gateways to Ecstasy ~ A 5Rhythms Workshop | South Oxford Community Centre
Jun 21–Jun 22, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
WHAT IS THE WORKSHOP ABOUT? “Ecstasy is an egoless, timeless state of being. It’s a state of total alignment and unity. Unity of body, heart, mind, soul, and spirit. It is what we need to heal our psychic dismemberment. We can’t access it if we are divided, body against mind, mind against heart, or any other way. We can only reach ecstasy through wholeness. One way to experience being whole is through meditation. The purpose of meditation is to still the mind and surrender to the moment. The fastest way I’ve found to still the mind and be aware of the moment is to move the body.” ~Gabrielle Roth, Maps to Ecstasy. Gabrielle Roth wrote an entire book on ecstasy and how to get there through the map of the 5Rhythms. Contrary to popular belief, ecstasy is not just confined to the rhythm of Lyrical or Chaos, but can be found in all of the rhythms individually, and when danced as a Wave. In this 2-day workshop, we will dive into the transformative power of the 5Rhythms practice and explore different gateways to ecstasy through dance, through each of our senses, through presence, and through connection with the self and with others. PREREQUISITES No experience or prerequisites required. Just your curiosity, commitment to be present, and an open heart. WHEN AND WHERE Saturday 21st June, 12:30pm to 6:30pm. Sunday 22nd June 2025, 12pm to 6pm Oxford, UK. COST £125 (£110 concession) Early bird until 21st May: £110 (£95 concession) Super Early bird until 21st April: £95 (£80 concession)

PRIVATE RITES: Julia Armfield in conversation with Jess White | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jul 3, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
We're are thrilled to welcome Julia Armfield back to Blackwell's for the paperback publication of Private Rites, an uneasy, water-logged tale of family, queer love and faith at the end of the world. Julia will be in conversation with Jess White. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: It's been raining for a long time now, for so long that the lands have reshaped themselves. Old places have been lost. Arcane rituals and religions have crept back into practice. Sisters Isla, Irene and Agnes have not spoken in some time when their estranged father dies. A famous architect revered for making the new world navigable, he had long cut himself off from public life. They find themselves uncertain of how to grieve his passing when everything around them seems to be ending anyway. As the sisters come together to clear the grand glass house that is the pinnacle of his legacy, they begin to sense that the magnetic influence of their father lives on through it. Something sinister seems to be unfolding, something related to their mother's long-ago disappearance and the strangers who have always been unusually interested in their lives. Soon, it becomes clear that the sisters have been chosen for a very particular purpose, one with shattering implications for their family and their imperilled world. About the author: Julia Armfield is a fiction writer, living in London with her wife and cat. Her work has been published in Granta, The White Review and Best British Short Stories 2019 and 2021.
