Comprised entirely of volunteer singers, this 160-voice auditioned chorus is dedicated to performingchoral-orchestral masterworks at the highest artistic level. Founded in 1963, the Nashville Symphony Chorus has contributed to the Symphony’s GRAMMY®-nominated recordings and has premiered several commissioned works, including Gabriela Lena Frank’s Conquest Requiem. Committed to community engagement and education, the Chorus shares the joy of choral music with audiences of all ages. Dr. Tucker Biddlecombe (Ph.D.) is Professor of Choral Studies and Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. There he conducts the Vanderbilt Sixteen as well as courses in conducting and music education. He also serves as Director of the Nashville Symphony Chorus, which has included chorus preparation for many of the repertoire’s most revered masterworks. During his tenure, the all-volunteer Nashville Symphony Chorus has produced two major world-premiere recordings, John Harbison’s Requiem as well as the upcoming release of Gabriela Lena-Frank’s Conquest Requiem. He has conducted honor choirs in a dozen states and conducted residencies in the United Kingdom and China. The Tallahassee Community Chorus began in 1988 as a collaborative effort between the Florida State University School of Music and 37 community singers. The ensemble has grown to more than 200 singers and has become one of the leading non-auditioned community choruses in the country. Much of the momentum for this growth and development has been the genius of former Artistic Director, Dr. André J. Thomas, whose energy, skill and musical talents are known and respected throughout the choral world. Upon the retirement of Dr. Thomas at the end of the 2018-19 season, the Chorus welcomed its current Artistic Director, Dr. Michael Hanawalt. In keeping with its mission, the Chorus promotes choral music through excellence in performance, invites schools to attend dress rehearsals, and partners each concert with a local human services nonprofit organization. The repertoire of the Chorus focuses on the performance of large masterworks with orchestra. Recent performances include works by Mendelssohn, Handel, Thompson, Brahms, Lauridsen, Fauré, Ray, Poulenc, Honegger, Haydn, Mahler, Vaughan Williams, Thomas, Dilworth, and Beethoven. To date, The Chorus has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City (2004), in China, where the singers were proud to take part in the First International Beijing Choral Festival (2007), the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. (2008), in Prague, Czech Republic, in the Prague Choral Festival (2011), in Paris and Normandy, France, in the Paris Choral Festival (2013), in Italy for the Rome Festival (2015), Ireland for the Limerick Sings! Festival (2017). In February 2019, the Chorus performed the world premiere of the André Thomas Mass: A Celebration of Love and Joy at the American Choral Directors 60th Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Michael Hanawalt is the Director of Graduate Choral Studies at Florida State University, where he conducts the Chamber Choir, teaches graduate courses in conducting and choral literature, and serves as Artistic Director for the Tallahassee Community Chorus. Previous appointments include Director of Choral Activities at Wichita State University, Chorus Director at the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, and Visiting Instructor of Music at St. Olaf College. Active as a conductor and tenor soloist, Dr. Hanawalt has conducted choirs and honor choirs in and from many American states as well as the Czech Republic, Portugal, and Puerto Rico. His choirs have appeared at conventions of the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO) and the American Choral Directors Association’s (ACDA) Southern Region. His setting of “Amazing Grace” has been performed at two national conventions of the American Choral Director’s Association, and his arrangement of “Loch Lomond” is featured on the Cantus recording, Let Your Voice Be Heard. The RSNO Chorus is one of the busiest and most respected choruses in the UK. Directed by Stephen Doughty, they perform around 15 times per Season with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. In 2018 the RSNO Chorus celebrated its 175th anniversary, making it one of the oldest symphonic choruses in the world. The RSNO Chorus has over 130 members from across Scotland, and perform regularly with leading international conductors and RSNO Music Director Thomas Søndergård. The Chorus perform a wide range of repertoire, from large scale choral works to well-known film scores. Recent repertoire highlights are Bernstein’s Mass, Brahms’ Requiem, Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, Poulenc’s Gloria and Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius, and in 2018 they gave a widely acclaimed performance of Britten’s War Requiem at the BBC Proms. The RSNO Chorus has also had great success in recording with the Orchestra. Its recordings, amongst others, of Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky, conducted by Neeme Järvi, and Holst’s The Planets, conducted by David Lloyd-Jones, have both been subject to high critical acclaim. Stephen Doughty has been Chorus Director of the RSNO Chorus since the start of the 2022:23 Season. Since his arrival the Chorus has seen an influx of new members, and an abundance of varied and critically acclaimed performances, including Verdi’s Requiem, Britten’s War Requiem, Bruckner’s E Minor Mass and the Scottish premiere of Sir James MacMillan’s Christmas Oratorio. He has also directed the Chorus in new and imaginative programmes in their own right, including Rheinberger’s glorious Mass in E flat for double choir, and concerts with percussion and organ featuring Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, the European premiere of McIntyre’s Missa Brevis and Ives’ final major choral work, Psalm 90. Stephen’s previous 12-year tenure as Chorus Master of Belfast Philharmonic Choir included a number of world premieres, most significantly James Whitbourn’s The Seven Heavens and Philip Hammond’s Requiem for the Lost Souls of the Titanic, performed exactly 100 years since the liner went down, and further European premieres of both Stuart Scott’s Requiem Brevis, which saw the 100-strong choir separated into eight choirs spaced around the audience, and Christopher Marshall’s Earthsong. Stephen particularly enjoys working with amateur singers, not least leading regular singing days frequently involving up to 800 amateur singers. He was Musical Director of Edinburgh Bach Choir for 7 years and has enjoyed the directing the Garleton Singers for over 30 years, performing with them recently at the Lammermuir Festival. Stephen plays harpsichord/organ continuo and orchestral piano and has given frequent organ recitals, including several on the grand Mulholland Organ in the Ulster Hall, Belfast. He is also in demand as an arranger and orchestrator, with a large portfolio of work particularly for young voices. He has produced a plethora of arrangements of the music of pianist Christopher Norton, including two publications of piano duets and a suite for wind sextet, and has received commissions from Children’s Classic Concerts, the Ulster Orchestra and the RSNO. Commissions from the BBC have seen his work being performed on BBC Alba and at the Last Night of the Proms, and his pieces feature on several recordings, including with the RSNO Chorus. Finally, Stephen is an Examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. www.stephendoughty.co.uk John Philip Kitchen MBE is a Scottish organist, harpsichordist, conductor, early music scholar, and music educator based in Edinburgh. He gives many solo recitals both in the UK and further afield, and also plays regularly with several ensembles, covering a wide range of musical styles. In addition, he is much in demand as a continuo player, accompanist, tutor, lecturer, writer, adjudicator, reviewer and recording artist. Jul 13, 2024–Jan 6, 2026 (UTC)
Edinburgh
Exhibitions
The Cold War was a 40-year nuclear stand-off between the USA and the Soviet Union after the Second World War. Scotland’s unique landscape provided a useful base for Allied military preparations and research. The impact of the war still lingers in Scottish politics, culture and memory. Scots played an active role in the global conflict as soldiers within intelligence services and as part of voluntary civil defences. The exhibition will draw on Scotland’s rich history of Cold War-era protest and activism. Cold War Scotland is an output of Materialising the Cold War, a collaborative research project between National Museums Scotland and the University of Stirling. The project explores how the Cold War heritage is represented and how museums can adapt to tell this story in future. Materialising the Cold War is funded by a major grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
