Arts
The Virginia Center for the Book is pleased to announce the Bookbinding Core Skills: 2023 Fall Intensive Session. This four-day workshop will take place from Thursday, October 26th to Sunday, October 29th at the Virginia Center for the Book in Charlottesville. Led by experienced instructors, Jane Freeman and Yolanda Merrill, this workshop is designed to equip participants with the fundamental skills necessary for bookbinding.
The workshop will consist of four consecutive classes, running from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day. In the first class, participants will be introduced to basic bookbinding tools, materials, and processes. They will have the opportunity to complete three softcover books and an accordion book. The second class will focus on refining basic skills and developing craft, using the portfolio structure. Participants will create a large portfolio with tie closure and a single signature journal or notepad holder.
In classes three and four, participants will learn how to make case-bound books. They will be guided through the process and will have the opportunity to create two case-bound books of their own, experimenting with decorative paper if desired. At the end of the series, participants will receive a Certificate of Basic Skills in Bookbinding from the VCB.
Registration for this workshop ends on Thursday, October 19, 2022. The registration fee for the four-day course is $380 for members and $445 for non-members. All materials will be provided, and the workshop fee includes online registration. Additional decorative papers may be available for purchase. Please note that class size is limited to eight students, so register early to secure your spot.
