Firelei Báez | Vancouver Art Gallery

Nov 3, 2024–Mar 16, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Vancouver
Exhibitions
Organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, this exhibition is the first mid-career survey of the richly layered work of Firelei Báez. One of the most exciting painters of her generation, Báez delves into the historical narratives of the Atlantic Basin. Over the past twenty years, she has made work that explores the multilayered explorations of the legacy of colonial histories and the African diaspora in the Caribbean and beyond. She draws on the disciplines of anthropology, geography, folklore, fantasy, science fiction and social history to unsettle categories of race, gender and nationality in her paintings, drawings and installations. Her exuberant paintings feature finely wrought, complex and layered uses of pattern, decoration and saturated colour, often overlaid on maps made during colonial rule in the Americas. Báez’s investment in the medium of painting and its capacity for storytelling and mythmaking informs all her work, including her sculptural installations, which bring this quality into three dimensions. This exhibition offers audiences a timely opportunity to gain a holistic understanding of Báez’s complex and profoundly moving body of work, cementing her as one of the most important artists of the early 21st century. Please note that the banner installation Truth was the bridge (or an emancipatory healing) (2024) on the Gallery’s Georgia facade will be removed between November 6 and 13, 2024, for Lumière Festival.

It takes a village to raise a child, we are that village. With a focus on at risk youth, by freeing them of financial barriers, and providing them with an abundance of culturally sensitive supports, we will see them succeed. Sports, Mentorship, Environment, Counselling and Mental Health, Drug and Gang Education, Community Patrol.. These streams are contributing factors towards reducing youth crime by giving young people a positive identity, feelings of empowerment and helping youth acquire leadership, teamwork, and self-governance skills under adult supervision. The BC Place Annual KidsPlay Cup brings in hundreds of children, giving them the opportunity to compete in a large-scale event. Many of the children that attend the event often come from minority and marginalized communities. Though not always the case, their coming from lower-socioeconomic backgrounds results in them having greater susceptibility to criminal activity. Through the BC Place KidsPlay Cup, we hope to provide a safe and supportive environment in which kids can break barriers, dedicate themselves, and learn from mentors. Information Source: eventbrite

The Infidels Presents: Postcards From Zambia at Hero's Welcome | Hero's Welcome

Nov 7, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Vancouver
Concerts
Postcards From Zambia are a polyrhythmic fusion of modal jazz and traditional percussion music from various Zambian cultures. Though the group draws inspiration from all over this central/southern African country, their repertoire is especially focussed on Luvale (and related) music from Zambia's Northwestern Province. In essence, the Postcards recreate a traditional ngoma ensemble through the orchestration, improvisation, and arranging tendencies of the jazz idiom. Percussionist Jason Winikoff and drummer Chris Blaber recreate the tightly interlocking rhythmic foundation while Feven Kidane (trumpet), Dean Thiessen (piano), and Noah Gotfrit (bass) fill the roles of a call-and-response choir. The result is an energetic, grooving, joyful, and powerful musical meditation that can be enjoyed from the contemplative comfort of your seat or the dancefloor. Bandleader and arranger Jason Winikoff has spent years studying under, performing alongside, and working with various elite Zambian dance troupes such as Lenga Navo, Likumbi Lya Mize Chibolya, and Chota. He is a student of the renowned cultural custodians Kapalu Lizambo, Josephine Sombo Muzala Chipango, William Vunda, and Douglas Mwila as well as a proud partner of the Likumbi Lya Mize Cultural Association. He is honored to bring a slice of Luvale culture to Vancouver with the help of this scene's most creative and sensitive musicians. This performance is part of Social Music, a monthly series presented by presented by Infidels Jazz at Hero's Welcome. Doors Open: 7PM Hero's Welcome: 3917 Main Street Tickets: $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Admission is 19+. Information Source: Tim Reinert | eventbrite
