Our next Civil Cafe will focus on the expansion of early education in Hawaiʻi. For years, working families have struggled to find affordable programs that support their children’s academic growth, social development and overall well-being. Now, state leaders and providers are making historic investments in early learning as they race to meet Hawaiʻi’s ambitious goal of providing all children with access to preschool by 2032. More than 6,700 children in Hawaiʻi currently lack access to preschool. What will it take to improve access to early education in Hawaiʻi? Join us in the newsroom on Wednesday, August 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for a conversation with educators, advocates and other families working to improve access to early education in Hawaiʻi. Our panelists include: Sylvia Luke - Lieutenant Governor of Hawaiʻi Ben Naki - Executive Vice President of Early Childhood Education Programs of Parents and Children Together and President of the Head Start Association of Hawaiʻi Jeff Bock - Director of UH Mānoa Childrenʻs Center and President of the Hawai’i Association for the Education of Young Children. This event will be moderated by Civil Beat education reporter Megan Tagami. Register to attend in-person, online or to receive the recording. This event will be guided by written questions submitted by the audience in person and in advance. Send in your questions through this form. This free in-person event will be live-streamed and recorded. The recording will be sent to everyone who registers, including those who cannot make it live. Transcripts will be available by request following the event. The in-person event will be held at the Civil Beat newsroom in Kaimukī, located on the second floor above Goodwill Hawaiʻi. Parking is located within the building at 3650 Waiʻalae Avenue, entrance on Wilhelmina Rise. Parking validation for up to 2 hours will be provided for all attendees. A link to join the virtual event will be sent 24 hours prior to the event. By registering for this event, you'll receive a subscription to Civil Beat's free e-newsletters. HA forms a super hydrating net over the skin and delivers water to parched skin over time. Empty Bowl Hawai'i is a powerful gathering where artists, chefs, and the community unite to support food security and the fight against hunger. This one-of-a-kind event transforms empty bowls into vessels of hope and connection, bringing together thousands of handcrafted bowls and dishes prepared by Hawai'i's most talented chefs. As guests explore the event, they will have the opportunity to select from thousands of beautiful, hand-thrown bowls created by local potters from the Hawaii Potters Guild —each one a lasting reminder that hunger persists and that an empty bowl is a reality for many. This isn't just another fundraiser—it's a movement to strengthen connections between people, food, farmers, and well-being. Empty Bowl Hawai'i brings together Chef Hui , Aloha Harvest , and the Hawaii Potters Guild in collaboration to support food security efforts. While one in four keiki goes to bed hungry, thousands of pounds of food end up in landfills. Audiences around the world can enjoy the live broadcast on May 1 at 7pm, exclusively on mele.com .   As a production of nonprofit organization Kāhuli Leo Leʻa, the concert will feature performances of mele, hula, and moʻolelo that will not only serve to entertain, but to educate. Producer and executive director, Zachary Lum, explains that “the theme of this year’s show honors the 50-year hula legacy of Robert Cazimero.” Lum adds, “While Hawaiʻi and the world celebrates the legendary voice and music of Robert Cazimero, we don’t often get to celebrate the kumu hula that is Robert Cazimero. May Day will be one of many 50th anniversary celebrations for Hālau Nā Kamalei o Līlīlehua.”   The cultural celebration will be another memorable chapter in the series of May Day concerts with the joint support of co-title sponsors Hawaiian Airlines and Mele.com, and the following sponsors: Hawaii Tourism Authority, Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, Accel Rentals, The Ritz-Carlton Residences Waikīkī Beach, Highway Inn, Kahui Palaka, Noho Home, Hawaiian Host, Hawaiian Pie Co., Okinakalani Ltd., and more.   “Our purpose to connect people with aloha begins with honoring the traditions of our island home, and we’re excited to set the stage for a celebration of one of our most cherished holidays by showcasing several of Hawaiʻi’s greatest musicians,” said Nakanelua-Richards. Co-presenting sponsor, Mele.com, will be the exclusive broadcast platform for this year’s concert. Learn more about what’s happening at Alaska and Hawaiian . Alaska Air Group is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) as “ALK.”  About May Day Hawaiʻi’s cultural phenomenon is best explained in the simple words of Leonard Hawk: May Day is Lei Day in Hawaiʻi. Since 1927, May Day has hosted countless kamaʻāina and malihini who joined in the annual celebration of the flower lei and all things Hawaiian. Besides the making, wearing, and giving of lei, May Day celebrations eventually became synonymous with music, hula, crafts, and so many cultural practices.   In 1977, the celebration expanded further with the first May Day concert by the Brothers Cazimero at the Waikīkī Shell. This annual tradition would last decades and become the dependable beacon and culmination of this lei celebration. After what seemed to be the last May Day in the early 2000's, Robert Cazimero approached Keauhou, the group consisting of Jonah Kahanuola Solatorio, and brothers, Nicholas and Zachary Lum, to see if they would be willing to carry the torch forward – continuing the immense legacy of music, hula, and, of course, lei. Keauhou humbly accepted this kuleana and began a new chapter of this celebrated tradition on May 1, 2019, at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center. In 2020, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing cultural/educational programming, Kāhuli Leo Leʻa, took on the mantle of producing the annual spectacle in partnership with Keauhou and with the support of other community partners. Surfing Sisterhood Hawai‘i: Wahine Reclaiming the Waves is an event taking place on October 21, 2023, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa William S. Richardson School of Law in Honolulu. This event celebrates the resurgence of female power and creativity in the birthplace of surfing. Mindy Pennybacker, a columnist for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and a Honolulu native, brings the vibrant world of waveriding in the Hawaiian islands to life in her book, Surfing Sisterhood. Through a blend of Hawaiian legends, historical accounts, and interviews with over thirty contemporary female surfers, Pennybacker showcases the passion and freedom that girls and women find in surfing. Despite facing discouragement and interference from some male surfers who vastly outnumber them in the water, these female surfers refuse to be deterred. Pennybacker recounts how female surfers were pushed aside and underestimated by a male-dominated industry in the past, but they have made a strong comeback. In fact, female surfers are now breaking new ground and achieving remarkable feats. For example, in 2021, Carissa Moore, a five-time world champion from Hawaii, won gold in the Olympic surfing event. In 2022, Moana Jones Wong became the first woman to win the World Surf League championship tour event at Banzai Pipeline, conquering the big, barreling waves that were previously considered too dangerous for female competitions. Surfing Sisterhood Hawai‘i: Wahine Reclaiming the Waves is a testament to the resilience and determination of female surfers in reclaiming their rightful place in the sport. This event offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history, personal stories, and the unwavering spirit of these remarkable women. Admission to this event is free, and attendees can also have the opportunity to meet Mindy Pennybacker and have their books signed. For more information about the event and the full schedule, please visit hawaiibookandmusicfestival.com. Get ready to be inspired by the incredible journey of women in the world of surfing.
