This presentation will provide an overview on using microbe-metal interactions for a sustainable method for extracting, concentrating, and separating rare earth elements (bio-mining). About our speakers: Speaker: Michael Martinez Michael Martinez is a PhD Chemistry student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and is a student with the Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP). Michael is an enrolled tribal member of the Village of Kotlik in Alaska. He has been conducting research with Briggs Lab UAA since 2018. Michael presented at the National Academy of Inventors in 2021 as a Next Generation Inventor. He was honored by Senator Sullivan to the U.S. Senate and President in Washington D.C. for work in sustainable rare earth element bio-mining. He obtained his B.Sc in Chemistry at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2022. Michael is the Co-Founder & CEO of Arctic Biotech Oath and the ABO team successfully completed both NSF innovation corps programs. He taught at the University of Minnesota NIH ADAR training program from 2022-2024. He has presented research in France, at the SME Annual Conference and to the American Chemical Society Conference. His research investigates rare earth element extraction and separation processes using microbial cells. His research contributions are to the U.S. Department of Energy CORE-CM group and UAF Center ICE program for innovation. Speaker: Dr. Brandon Briggs, PhD Dr. Brandon Briggs is a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Alaska Anchorage and Director of the Advanced Instrumentation in Microbiome Studies (AIMS) Core Facility. He holds an M.S. in Microbiology and a Ph.D. in Oceanography and has over 20 years of experience investigating how microbes interact with minerals in extreme environments. His work spans microbially mediated iron reduction, acid mine drainage, metal toxicity, and bioremediation of contaminants such as chromium. Dr. Briggs leads a multidisciplinary research team focused on developing bio-based methods for extracting critical minerals, particularly rare earth elements (REEs), using environmentally sustainable processes. His recent publications highlight novel bioweathering pathways that operate near neutral pH; thus, reducing the need for corrosive acids in mineral extraction. Under his leadership, the AIMS Core supports applied microbiological research with tools for genome sequencing, metabolic profiling, and bioreactor-scale experimentation. As a member of the U.S. Department of Energy’s CORE-CM initiative, Dr. Briggs brings practical insight into the integration of microbial systems with scalable engineering platforms for critical mineral recovery, especially in cold or logistically challenging environments like Alaska. His work is helping to bridge basic science with infrastructure resilience, resource independence, and environmental stewardship. Sports & Fitness Golf
This tournament is an ongoing celebration of Mike’s life, and his passion for meaningful friendship, golf, and giving his time, energy and support to charitable organizations that inspired him. It is also an opportunity to spend time with Mike and Shawn’s incredible network of family, friends, and associates. This year, we hope to expand the tournament to a full shotgun to further support the Scotty Gomez Foundation, an organization which Mike helped to found and for which he had great passion. Mike and Peak Oilfield Services hosted the Stanley Cup celebration in Anchorage in 2000 and 2003, when Scott brought the cup to Alaska. In December of 2018, Mike suggested to Scott and Carlos Gomez, and a few others, that he wanted to resurrect the Scotty Gomez Golf Tournament in the summer of 2019, on a smaller scale, focused on those who supported the tournament in the early days. Mike’s idea for this tournament was realized in 2019 in a very fun and successful tournament, and we were fortunate to have been able to host the fifth annual tournament last year. I am sure that Mike will once again be there with us in spirit at the golf course, and he is certainly present in our combined thoughts and memories. The fee for a foursome remains at $1000, and although our main goal is not fundraising, any proceeds generated will go to the Scotty Gomez Foundation. There have been some exceptionally generous companies and individuals who have sponsored the event over the past five years, including Marsh and McLennan with a very generous annual sponsorship, Delta Constructors, K&L Distributors, Flowline-Alaska, Marathon, Bristol Bay Native Corp, Price-Gregory, and PRA, along with all our team sponsors Sign-in will be at 6 AM, with a 7AM shotgun start! Our goal continues to be to make this a signature event on the Anchorage golf scene, in association with the Scotty Gomez Foundation, and we hope to fill a shotgun tournament of 36 foursomes this year in Mike’s honor.
