Behrang Karimi | Morena di Luna

Behrang Karimi | Morena di Luna

May 31–Sep 7, 2025 (UTC)
Hove
Exhibitions
Karimi uses a range of methods, including monotypes, wood- and linocuts and gouache; combined, they create a lively dialogue between the artist and his work. Landscapes and views are often merely hinted at – humans are the true heart of Karimi’s work, appearing as portraits, in classic poses, as lying and seated nudes, alone and in groups. The room around them is diffuse, sometimes suggested by a doorway flooded with light, other times by another person appearing at the edge of the picture. Two people face one another, rigid as statues, separated by a light expanse of color, of water? His figures seem delicate and brittle, as does the scenery they move within. They all portray small episodes within a unique moment – like the worm crawling towards the apple – that disappear almost before we have fully grasped their significance.

The Peter Summerfield Public Lecture Fatal Attraction: Understanding the Israel-Iran Relationship Lior Sternfeld (Penn State University) Few know that Iran was the second Muslim country to recognise Israel after 1949, initiating three decades of close partnership that included Israeli support for the Shah's regime. The 1979 Iranian Revolution dramatically altered this alliance, officially severing diplomatic ties on February 1, 1979. Yet, paradoxically, behind the fierce rhetoric, covert collaboration continued during the brutal eight-year Iran-Iraq war. Since then, these nations have existed in a precarious state of mutual hostility and dangerous brinkmanship. This lecture examines the complex dynamics between these countries and their societies, with special attention to the significant developments and escalating tensions of the past 18 months. Join us for an expert analysis of one of geopolitics' most consequential and misunderstood relationships. Lior Sternfeld is Professor of History and Jewish Studies at Penn State University. He is a social historian of the modern Middle East, specialising in the histories of Jewish communities and other minorities in the region. His first book, Between Iran and Zion: Jewish Histories of Twentieth-Century Iran (Stanford University Press, 2018), explores the integration of Jewish communities into Iran’s nation-building projects, set against the backdrop of Iranian nationalism, Zionism, and constitutionalism. Currently, he is working on two book projects: The Origins of Third Worldism in the Middle East and a study of the Iranian-Jewish diaspora in the U.S. and Israel. The Peter Summerfield Public Lecture is part of the Max and Hilde Kochmann Summer School for PhD students organised by the Weidenfeld Institute/Centre for German-Jewish Studies in cooperation with the Centre for Jewish Studies of the Karl Franz Universität in Graz and the European Association of Israel Studies. The public lecture will be followed by a reception All welcome Information Source: BNJC | eventbrite

How Speed Dating Works in Brighton When you arrive at the Brighton venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Brighton and Hove
Cultural Experiences
Metalpoint drawing came to prominence in Renaissance era Europe and continued to be a core drawing method until it was overtaken by the graphite pencil. It saw a resurgence of popularity in the 20th Century and is now used a small number of contemporary artists, including Roy Eastland . Roy is one of the world’s leading metalpoint artists, with his award-winning silverpoint drawings regularly exhibited around the UK. In the first workshop of its kind, Roy will introduce us to the processes of metalpoint drawing, explaining the tools that can be used and the surfaces that can be drawn on. This workshop is ideal for artists with some drawing experience who want to learn the more about metalpoint drawing and Roy's own personal approach. What to Expect Metalpoint drawing encourages a subtle and considered approach to drawing. This workshop, delivered through demonstration, personal feedback and practical application, is an opportunity to gain an insight into Roy’s methods and will give you the skills to develop your own metalpoint drawing process. You will leave with your own metal point stylus and prepared surfaces to work on and will have the opportunity to bein your own drawing during the weekend course.
