This is an in-depth study into the history of Karayuki-san and the Japanese prostitutes in Singapore. We’ll dig deep into history and try to reason how and why, and if so, when did they leave. Karayuki-san does not exist in Singapore anymore. While we may imagine this to be a saucy story, it is really the opposite. It is hard to imagine that anyone in Singapore could book into a Japanese brothel. In a “Truth is stranger than Fiction” analogy, Singapore indeed had numerous Japanese brothels in the early days. By the middle of the 20th century, almost all were gone. So, what happened? We’ll start this story with the first waves of arrivals from Amakusa, Japan. Today, there is hardly any trace of Japanese prostitution in Singapore. But the truth remains they were once here. Our tour will start at the first enclave of Japanese brothels in Chinatown. From these known brothels, we’ll take a train to the Middle Road area – a place where some of us refer to as “Little Japan”. 'SNOW' is a narrative-focused long-form improv format based on flashbacks of characters’ past. In this story, we go past the classical structure of “good guys” vs “villains”, and we see how each character has their own deep reasons to act the way they do. In these years in Belgium, he also had the chance to play with professionals from all over the world. Pierpaolo's work in scripted theatre led him to write and direct the play When Time Stands Still, which starred in the Roma Fringe Festival and Scripted Toronto Festivals, and he's co-written and directed a number of plays in Italian. His storytelling, directing, and writing background has helped him develop improv tools in areas like narrative and characters, as well as improvising in different genres.
