The Event : Come shake off the stress and weight of the week with us at The Wiggle Room – judgement free movement workshops that get you out of your head, into your body, and shaking out your stress with joy and laughter with other Black and brown womxn. As we shake off the winter and prepare for spring, April's movement theme is “Release the Cheeks” with Saharla Vetsch – multidisciplinary artist, performer, and instructor. This workshop is all about releasing tension and stress by connecting our mind to our hips through movement. Saharla will guide us through a series of stretches, movements, and grooves before we shake it out on the floor. In The Wiggle Room , we intentionally call on our flexibility and grace for some of the things we’re individually navigating so that we can leave feeling lighter and standing in our power. And after we wiggle – let’s grab some giggle juice (aka cocktail/mocktail). Join us for a drink at a nearby bar to cool down, connect, and kick into the weekend. Meet Saharla : Saharla Vetsch (she/her) is a Somali American multidisciplinary artist rooted in the Bay Area. As a Cal alum, the granddaughter of American labor leader, César Chávez and American labor activist Helen Fabela Chávez, and an accomplished political strategist in her own right, Julie can offer valuable insights into political coalition building and public engagement on key issues from the grassroots level to the highest office in our nation. At this critical juncture in the nation's political future, Julie will speak to the current state of politics in the country, ways in which organizing and civic engagement have changed over the years, and what individuals, especially students can do in this moment to get engaged and ensure their voices are heard. About the Speaker: Julie Chávez Rodriguez is an American political strategist and the former campaign manager for the Harris-Walz campaign. Prior to leading the Campaign, Julie served as the Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Senior Adviser to the President during the Biden-Harris Administration. From 2009 to January 2017, Rodriguez served in the Obama administration, initially working for the United States Secretary of the Interior and later in the White House Office of Public Engagement. She was appointed state director for Senator Kamala Harris in 2017. She later served on the Kamala Harris 2020 presidential primary campaign in 2019. In 2020, Rodriguez was hired by the Joe Biden 2020 presidential campaign as Deputy Campaign Manager and senior advisor for Latino outreach. The Berkeley Journal of Black Law & Policy ( BJBLP ) is pleased to announce our Spring 2025 Symposium entitled All Power To The People: Reclaiming Populism as a Tool for Liberation! Join us on Friday, April 18th, 2025 at UC Berkeley, School of Law in Room 100 from 9:30am until 3:00pm for a day filled with engaging panel discussions, insightful keynote addresses, and community-driven discussions around the history of Black populist movements. This symposium will explore the potential of populism as a tool for liberation in light of the widespread distrust of news, government, and public institutions meant to support everyday people. While the term populism has gained infamy as an expression of right-wing fascism in the current Trump era, this interpretation of the term misrepresents how working-class people, especially Black Americans, have historically participated in empowering populist movements. Thus, the program will examine the rise of right-wing populism in the U.S. and its impact on democratic institutions while exploring how populist movements can be redirected toward transformative and inclusive politics. Part I will define and clarify the meaning of populism, address the limits of the Democratic Party to serve Black American constituents as its most consistent voting bloc, and discuss the Pigford class action lawsuits against the USDA as exemplary of the need to address both race and class in any political movement. Part II will ask what to do now and how to forge a path forward. These sessions will start by framing populism as a tool for political mobilization, then explore the manifestation of this ideology in two distinct areas: cooperative economics and higher education. These panels draw inspiration from Black-led political movements and critical Black scholarship, referencing the Black Panther Party’s prefigurative politics and W.E.B. Du Bois’s writing on education. Information Source: Berkeley Journal of Black Law and Policy | eventbrite

A Federalist Alternative for European Governance | Harris Room - Institute of Governmental Studies

Berkeley
Conferences
Please Join us on Tuesday, April 22nd, for a book talk with Professor Sergio Fabbrini on his latest book, A Federalist Alternative for European Governance: The European Union in Hard Times . How did the European Union (EU) deal with the crises of the 2010s and 2020s? These crises arose in policy realms that were the province of national governments, so the European Council was the driving institution for managing them. National governments were able to take decisions, but their decisions were contradictory and unaccountable, and regularly hindered by divisions between them. In order to manage a policymaking process dominated by the claims of national and sub-regional governments, Sergio Fabbrini argues that intergovernmental governance has had to transform the EU into an international organization. Fabbrini shows that differentiated integration would further distance the EU from the project of an ‘ever closer union’ and, on the basis of a comparative federalism approach, he proposes an alternative paradigm of a multi-tier Europe with a federalist core to balance national sovereignties and supranational authority. About the Speaker: Sergio Fabbrini is Professor of Political Science and International Relations, Intesa Sanpaolo Chair on European Governance, at the Political Science Department of the Luiss Guido Carli in Rome. He is a highly respected scholar of European politics renowned for bringing federalism back to the scientific debate. His recent publications include, Europe’s Future: Decoupling and Reforming (Cambridge, 2019), Which European Union?: Europe after the Euro Crisis (Cambridge, 2015), and Compound Democracies: Why the United States and Europe Are Becoming Similar (Oxford University Press, 2010). He is also a political editor for the Italian financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, for which he was awarded the 2017 Spinelli Prize. This event is presented by the Institute of Governmental Studies, and is co-sponsored by the Institute of European Studies and the Institute of International Studies. This is an accessible event. From Sensation to Relation: Applications of Somatic Experiencing in Group Therapy This 6-hour in-person training will explore the inherent and restorative wisdom of the body as it relates to interpersonal relationships and intrapsychic dynamics. The voice of the body is often subtle, unspoken, and particular to each individual. Prioritizing the body allows for wholesome, secure, and satisfying connections. Conversely, ignoring the body can lead to dissociative, intellectual, or partial communication with compromised living. Through didactic and experiential learning, this workshop will advocate for prioritizing the body in group psychotherapy. After attending this workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Practice Somatic Experiencing principles and techniques. 2. Describe the somatic experience of felt security, as an attachment precursor. 3. Experience and articulate moments of physiologi- cal change (proprioception) around states of intra- psychic and interpersonal safety and danger (neuroception). 4. Assess aliveness, connection, disconnection, and collapse in experience somatically. 5. Evaluate and apply Somatic Experiencing concepts such as orienting, pendulation, titration, SIBAM, settling, and various forms of freeze responses. About the Workshop Leader Dr. Carlos Canales, Psy.D. is a bilingual/bicultural Clinical Psychologist, a Certified Group Psychotherapist (CGP), Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) and Fellow for the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA-F). Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore presents a very special evening at The David Brower Center when award winning and bestselling author Rebecca Solnit launches her new book No Straight Road Takes You There: Essays for Uneven Terrain. Rebecca will be joined in what is sure to be a lively discussion by special guest(s) to be announced and she will sign copies of her book after the presentation. This is a ticketed event with Rebecca's book bundled with your admission ticket. Tickets are available for one book and one seat for $21.95 (+ taxes and fees) or one book and two seats for $26.95 ( + taxes and fees). “This is a book of fierce and poetic thinking—and a guide for navigating a rapidly changing, non-linear, living world.” —Merlin Sheldrake, author of Entangled Life In the spirit of her bestselling book Hope in the Dark , Rebecca Solnit explores how our actions can shape the future and the liberatory possibilities of embracing uncertainty. Beginning with an essay about a three-hundred-year-old violin and what it can tell us about forests, abundance, and climate, and ending with one about a prisoner dreaming of seeing the ocean, No Straight Road Takes You There deftly bridges the political and the literary, offering unique insights, nuanced understanding, and inspiration for the challenging work ahead. In her latest essay collection, the award-winning author explores climate change, feminism, democracy, hope, and power and its abuse. Throughout she asks us to heed the stories we tell or have been told, and the ways those stories can be, or should be changed. Solnit offers a reappraisal of the value of indirect consequences, an embrace of unpredictability, slowness, and imperfection in the politics of how to change the world. “I've tried to find other ways of seeing and to prize the migratory routes ideas take,” Solnit writes in the introduction, “the way that hope is most often grounded in memory, because you can't see the future but you can understand the patterns and possibilities if you know the past.” REBECCA SOLNIT is the author of more than twenty books, including Orwell’s Roses; Hope in the Dark; Men Explain Things to Me; A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster ; and A Field Guide to Getting Lost. A longtime climate and human rights activist, she serves on the boards of Oil Change International and Third Act. THIS EVENT will start promptly at 7:00 PM so please be on time. DOORS will open at 6:15 PM COPIES OF Rebecca's books will be available for puchase at the event. Information Source: Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore | eventbrite
